With free parking and more
brought an extra 9.7m visitors
to the city after 5pm since its
launch in 2010
£
ESTIMATED VALUE OF
ALIVE AFTER FIVE HOURS
When the scheme was
launched in 2010 it was hoped
it would provide a multi-million
pound boost to city centre
business. Five years on, the
estimated value of Alive After
Five is estimated to be £591m
TOON’S ALIVE
AFTER FIVE!
It’s been five years since NE1 Ltd - the company
which champions Newcastle city centre - brought
us Alive After Five, and what a difference it’s made!
Over five years, the initiative has driven millions of
visitors into the city after 5pm thanks to thousands of
free parking spaces, extended shopping hours, a huge
growth in quality restaurants and coffee shops, new
gyms and bowling alleys, and a huge increase in
special events.
Now firmly established as a world-leading initiative,
Alive After Five has attracted scores of new retailers,
restaurants, cafes and bars to Newcastle, where the
one-time ‘dead zone’ between 5pm and 8pm is now
buzzing with people who travel in from the suburbs and
office workers who stay in town after work.
And its creator, NE1 Ltd, is continuing to introduce
new attractions to the city after 5pm, including the
twice-yearly NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week, which
boosts city restaurant trade by more than £350,000.
www.getintonewcastle.co.uk/alive-after-five
GREAT TASTE
A staggering 9.7m extra hungry visitors
have come into Toon after 5pm since
2010 - and they can eat their way
around the world. There is now the newly
Michelin-starred House of Tides (owner
Kenny Atkinson is pictured right), posh
burger joint Byron Burger, the fab New
York-style kitchen and gin distillery
Bealim House, Neopolitan bistro
Rossopomodoro, Brazilian steakhouse
Viva Brazil, Preuvian kitchen Solano’s,
American BBQ kitchen Purple Bear, veggie
destination Painted Elephant and many more,
drawn by the huge success of Alive After
Five and the twice-annual NE1’s Newcastle
Restaurant Week.
TRY SOMETHING NEW
The change in the city’s retailers and
restaurants has been huge, and that’s not all.
Eldon Leisure has had a big revamp to
improve the gym and add ten-pin bowling, Vertigo
climbing and Jungle Jack’s adventure soft play.
Head along to City Library, which is open
until 8pm, or the Lit & Phil to enjoy one of their
regular evening events and courses. Great North
Museum: Hancock also runs regular courses and
workshops in the evenings, while film showings at
the Tyneside Cinema are now accompanied by
regular special events at its new Bar Cafe.
There’s also been an influx of luxury in Toon,
with the opening of the new Vermont Aparthotel
and the new Crowne Plaza Hotel.
ALIVE
AFTER
FIVE
ALIVE
AFTER
FIVE
IN MY VIEW
SEAN BULLICK, CHIEF EXECUTIVE
NE1 LTD
PIONEERING NEWCASTLE
In October 2010, NE1 Ltd created Alive After
Five, driving shops to open late every night and
boosting visitor numbers to the city centre in the
once quiet zone of 5pm-8pm by millions. Since
then it has attracted new shops and more than
40 new restaurants to town and been praised
internationally for rejuvenating city life.
BY THE YARD
GONE SHOPPING
The rise in the number of people visiting the city
and the boost to trade has ushered in a host of new
retailers. Hugo Boss, luxury jeweller Rox and posh
skincare retailer Kiehl’s are in Monument Mall, while
designer jeweller Thomas Sabo is now at intu Eldon
Square. While 2015 saw a 2.9% decline in footfall
in towns and cities across the UK, Northumberland
Street saw a 7% rise. The city’s retailers report that
between 15-20% of their income is made between
5pm and 8pm.
IMAGE CREDIT: Maksim Toome / Shutterstock.com
We’re in celebratory mood with the
fifth anniversary of NE1’s Alive
after Five.
October 25 is the official birthday,
and what a huge success for the city!
Newcastle has completely transformed
since Alive after Five was launched in
2010. We have had an additional 9m
visitors to the city and businesses of
all sorts are benefiting from the early
evening economy, valued at £591m in
the last five years; a good illustration is
the opening of 43 new restaurants since
Alive after Five’s launch.
With people comes vibrancy,
excitement and security. The city centre
now attracts a much wider range of
people in the early evening; students
from around the world, families with
children, couples and more.
And it continues to grow and
evolve. Supporting NE1 events such
as Restaurant Week are always being
reviewed and improved, and new ones
are being dreamt up by the NE1 team all
the time.
It’s hard to remember what
Newcastle was like before Alive after
Five, even though we remain unique
in the UK as the only city permanently
open until 8pm.
Here’s to many happy returns of
the day.
The massive boost in trade and visitors
brought by Alive After Five has prompted many
redevelopments over the last five years.
The latest is taking place now at White Hart Yard - a
space between Grey Street and Cloth Market, which
is being turned into a food and drink destination with
various venues and pop-up spaces by Pleased to Meet
You owner Ladhar Leisure.
BRING THE CAR
The team at NE1 Ltd, who created Alive After Five,
knew that free parking would bring millions more
people into Toon after 5pm, and they work with the
city council to provide thousands of free parking
places at seven multi-storey car parks:
• Grainger Town Multi-Storey, Waterloo Square
• Eldon Garden Multi-Storey, Percy Street
• Eldon Square Multi-Storey, Percy Street
• Quayside Multi-Storey, City Road
• Manors Multi-Storey, City Road
• Oxford Street Multi-Storey
INTERNATIONAL APPEAL
Thanks to our universities, there are 135
nationalities now resident in Newcastle, Alive
After Five makes visitors and incomers from
around the world feel right at home. With more
shops open late, the streets are buzzing, and
the more cosmopolitan and attractive city
centre is loved by visitors and locals alike.
MUSIC
IN HEAVEN
New-wave synth pop seems to
be making a resurgence of late,
which will please fans of electro
combo Heaven 17, now a duo, who
include the Toon as part of their
UK tour this month.
At the height of their fame in the
early 80s, when dark disco classic
Temptation topped the charts in
1983, they played relatively few live
gigs - their first coming a mere 17
years after their formation.
With the music scene’s penchant
for recycling musical fashions, they
may be in favour once more with a
younger crowd, eager to experience
one of the pioneers of the genre.
Happy Days, getting constant rotation on the
wireless, it seems enduring British pop act
Squeeze have had a new lease of life.
Their success has spanned four decades,
with the popularity of hits including Cool For Cats
and Up The Junction ensuring they’ve never
really gone out of fashion. Their new tour sees
them team up with the original punk poet John
Cooper Clarke, whose biting wit and dry humour
will make for an original, bitingly
satirical support.
THEY’RE THE ONE
Following the news that One Direction Former band member Zayn left after falling
have agreed to take a break after their out with his South Shields-born fiancee
current world tour, tickets for their
Perrie of pretty popsters Little Mix. Zayn is
concerts are hotter than hot. If you’re scheduled to disappear without trace within
going to their Newcastle show, you’re a six months, before popping up again to host a
big fan, which means you know all there reality TV show on a minor cable channel.
is to know about them. For the rest of us,
here’s a summary of the life - and hair - of
pop’s premier pretty boys.
Having found fame on that TV powerhouse
of musical innovation, X Factor, One Direction
are a global phenomenon. The group’s album
sales top 50m, they’ve achieved 91 number
one singles, and they’ve performed live to
more than 7.5m fans worldwide, at least 75%
of whom claim to have shared a milkshake
with at least one member of the band.
One Direction have a bizarre pre-gig
ritual, and it’s not chucking tellies out of
hotel windows or downing whisky shots
in all-night benders. No, the 1D boys share
giant, family-sized bags of Haribo sweets.
Rock ‘n’ roll!
1D’s dolls were designed with laser image
face-sculpting technology so they’d
look just like the real thing. Harry, the
undisputed king of 1D hair, takes a Harry
doll everywhere, using it to try out new
hairstyles during quiet moments on the
tour bus, just like his own My Little Pony.
As well as being a pop star, Louis is also
a footballer, playing for Doncaster Rovers
during the 2013/14 season. He has special
dispensation from the FA to carry hair gel,
serum, and spray on the field at all times and
never leaves the house without his stylist.
HALF
TERM
HALF
TERM
SCHOOL’S OUT
We know, it feels like no time at all since the kids went back to school after the summer break, but half
term is already upon us (oh to be young again, eh?). If you thought you’d exhausted all your options over
the summer, here are some fresh ideas and top tips to keeping sane over the holiday.
Seven Stories Juice Festival Life Science Centre
Life Science Centre offers
a wealth of learning-based
activities for all ages. The Making
Space gives youngsters an
opportunity to get their hands
dirty – sometimes literally – with
a range of hands-on workshops
including animation skills (Oct
17-18), soldering a basic circuit
(Oct 24-25), creating a spooky
lantern or a firework picture
(Oct 26-30).
The Game On 2.0 show is
extended now into January,
which is brilliant because it has
to be one of the best days out in
the city - ironic if you spend most
of your time arguing with your
kids about screen time!
If you’re really not bothered
about the potential laundry
crisis afterwards, send your little
monsters on a Slime Workshop
(Oct 24-Nov 1), where they
Just Jam Intl
can play with the snot-like,
squidgy stuff (and learn about its
properties too). life.org.uk
NE1’s Space 2 has moved
to Pilgrim Street. The centre,
which offers offers everything
from careers advice to music
workshops to XBox and
PlayStation to people aged
13-18, is managed by YMCA
Newcastle. space2.org
For something a bit more arty
(although potentially no less
messy), Laing’s Art Academy
day (Oct 27) offers 7-10 year olds
the chance to try out a range of
fun techniques.
laingartgallery.org.uk
For tweens, magic and mayhem
is the order of the day at Seven
Stories, as authors Leigh
Steve Backshall
Bardugo and Melinda Salisbury
talk about their thrilling stories
and provide insights into writing
fantasy fiction (Oct 23). For
youngsters looking for a thrill,
celebrate 35 years of Janet and
Allan Ahlberg’s Funnybones
(Oct 24-Nov 1), with Hallowe’en
crafts, interactive storytimes and
dressing up.
An altogether wilder option
presents itself at Tyne Theatre &
Opera House, as Deadly 60 TV
presenter Steve Backshall brings
his Wild World to Toon (Oct 24).
The presenter, adventurer and
writer sends the audience on a
wild ride full of thrills and spills
from the Arctic to the Amazon,
looking at the wonderful array of
wildlife he’s encountered.
Day of the Dead celebrations
A whole week of tailor-made
activities takes place throughout
Half Term (Oct 24-Nov 1) at
Juice Festival. Take part in a
superhero training programme
at Tyneside Cinema inspired
by The Incredibles; watch and
participate in live circus at the
Mining Institute; get your face
Waterstones is hosting scary
stories and ghoulish goings-on in
the basement during Half Term,
ending with a spooky Hallowe’en
carved pumpkins or go dressed
in your scariest costume to win
some devilishly good prizes.
The most mischievous cat in
town comes calling at Tyne
Theatre & Opera House (Oct
brings witty wordplay and an
engaging theatre experience for
little kids - and big kids.
ALAN
CARR
CHATTY MAN
Alan Carr is on his way to talk our ears off
this month with latest his tour, Yap Yap
Yap. Here’s everything you need to know
about the Chatty Man star:
Alan has faced accusations of being ‘too
camp’ throughout his career. In a Guardian
interview he revealed he’d spent a lot of his
early life trying to ‘de-camp’ himself. He’d try
to play football or deepen his voice, but there
was always a little something that gave him
away – the obsession with Wonder Woman,
the laugh, the limp wrist, the love of Doris Day
films, perhaps?
On his distinctive voice, he says: “I didn’t
know what I sounded like until I watched
myself perform. So that’s why people are
shouting ‘Bender!’”
His dad Graham is from the North East and
was a professional footballer. He is currently
chief scout at Newcastle United.
Not entirely surprisingly, Alan didn’t
follow in his father’s sporting footsteps.
When he got to middle school, his PE
teacher proudly announced him as the
son of the Northampton Town manager
and that he would be made team captain.
“I was absolute crap. Scared of the ball.
Absolutely terrified,” says Alan.
So what was he like at school? “Mincey. I’ve
always been mincey. People think I put it on,
but I don’t. I’ve always been the same.”
In 2006, Carr and Lionel Blair - of all people
- saved a man who was about to fall from
a pier in Blackpool. You couldn’t make that
one up!
His trophy cabinet is as good as it comes with
two British Comedy Awards, two National
Television Awards and a BAFTA.
Park free from 5pm Mon–Sat in Council multi-storey car parks.
