Saint James Hosts AIMS Workshop
On a rainy September morning,
seven teachers from the Association of
Independent Maryland & DC Schools
(AIMS) braved the drive over South
Mountain to gather for Saint James’
inaugural AIMS Lesson Study workshop.
Lesson Study is a form of professional
development in which faculty come together
to discuss a specific issue a teacher is having
in the classroom. The group then explores
ways of solving the problem through a
structured discussion.
a structured discussion with Saint James
History Department Chair Ted Camp.
The participants found it valuable to see how
Lesson Study worked and left the workshop
with ideas that they could apply at their own
schools. As a community, we hope that this
workshop was the first of many and believe
that we can learn and grow by collaborating
with faculty from other schools. Please feel
free to contact Daphne Clyburn if you have
any questions: dmbclyburn@stjames.edu.
Daphne Clyburn leads the group discussion
as Sandra Pollock looks on.
After leading lesson study groups for the
past two years at Saint James and joining the
AIMS professional development committee
in February 2014, the opportunity arose for
Daphne Clyburn, who teaches Spanish, in
partnership with Sandra Pollock, Associate
Head of School, to host a workshop. The
two jumped at the chance to bring together
teachers from other AIMS schools to discuss
professional development for teachers.
In the workshop, teachers were introduced
to the concept of Lesson Study through
Saint James School
Board of Trustees
Meets on Halloween
The fall meeting of the Board of Trustees
took place on Friday, October 31st. The
Board welcomed new Trustees, Mr.
Gerardo (“Jerry”) Fernandez-Mena ’83
who resides in Mexico, and (The Rev.)
Mr. Robert G. (“Skip”) Windsor ’65, a
Massachusetts resident.
In the spring issue, we highlighted Mr. Jeremy McDonald,
our visual arts teacher who earned his Master’s Degree in Art
Education in 2014. Mr. McDonald’s research project examined
self-proclaimed “non-artists” and their actual drawing ability
and was conducted on the Saint James campus with 16 “artistic
doubters” comprised of students and faculty. We are pleased to
report that in November, his study was published in the Journal of
The Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools.
The study, along with information about our artistic abilities, is
available online at:
Congratulations, Mr. McDonald!
