A new Ford Ranger leaves the testing ground at
Silverton in Pretoria every two minutes, 24/7, and
these bakkies are then exported to 145 countries —
but nowhere else do they sell as well as in South
Africa. ‘SA is the biggest market for the Ranger,’
confirmed Dale Reid, boss of light commercial
vehicles at Ford South Africa. The plant now builds
33 models of the Ranger, but Reid said he will only
announce prices ‘in a few weeks’.
(Pundits predict a four to six percent increase.)
Meanwhile, it is a buyers’ market on the current
Ranger models, with fantastic offerings at all
dealers, and Motoring can recommend especially the
2,2 engined 4x2 range, which will remain good value
for a long time, as well as the Wildtrack, (right).
In the new 4x4 models, Reid’s team has added a raft
of driver assist sytems that not only add value to
the new Ranger, but also put it on par with a Land Rover Discovery off road. We drove the new 4x4 models in the
Cedarberg, and will report in detail how the old (left) stacks up against the new in Thursday’s Wheels.

FUSO Trucks Southern Africa yesterday
launched its first truck — the
FA9–137 — that is fully imported from
India.
Build at the new Daimler Trucks
and Bus factory in Chennai, India,
where it is sold as Bharat Benz, the
neat lorry was billed as comfortable
for drivers and the fleet managers’
budget alike.
My quick drive around the grounds
of the controversial new Steyn City,
built by Auto & General billionaire
Douw Stein between Riversands and
Diepsloot, showed up no faults that
could dispel these praises.
At a glittering launch event for
dealers on Thursday night, executive
director for Daimler Trucks and Buses
Kobus van Zyl said in the midst
of a current downturn in sales, Steyn’s
huge investment showed confidence
in South Africa’s future, as indeed did
Daimler with the launch of a new medium
commercial truck.
Naeem Hassim, head of Fuso SA,
said the new FA9­137 will set the pace
for more “built in India” products in
the future. His couterpart in Daimler,
Marcus Stegge, said the FA9–137 is a
fusion of passion and precision.
The FA9–137 is based on the
Canter light­duty truck and incorporates
a newly­developed 4D37 diesel
engine, boasting displacement of
3 907 cc, impressive output figures of
100 kW and 420 Nm and a six­speed
manual transmission.

Makitla, said the 4D37 Daimler engine
produces 420 Nm from
1 500 rpm and 100 kW at 2 500 rpm,
and has already proven itself on the
tough roads of India, where it carries
almost double the five­ton payload

but Hassim points out everything is
cyclical, and he is confident the economy
will turn again.
“When industries grow, the need
for transport grows in turn. We are
excited to know that this rugged truck
will be fuelling economies in southern
Africa as we showcase the various
applications it fulfils,” said Hassim.

rock­sliders in place of the standard Pajero running
boards.
An offroad snorkel, custom roof rack (with spotlight)
from Front Runner and a detachable tow bar
complete with overland kit completes the offerings
outside. Inside the leather clad cabin, the Pajero
Sport Shogun is fitted with an extra rubber cargo
protector for camping and adventure gear.
Each Shogun also comes with the latest Garmin
GPS Nuvi­cam device that is pre­loaded with popular
African overland routes and maps thanks to
Maps 4 Africa. The retail price remains R514 900,
the official retail price of the standard 2.5 Di­D 4x4
Auto, which includes a five­year or 90 000 km service
plan and a three­year or 100 000 km manufacturer’s
