The proportion of children in the population also decreased with the decreased in the number of children. In
2000 children accounted for 41 percent of Maldives total population. By 2014, this has decreased to 27 percent.
This trend is related to decrease in level of fertility in the mid of 2000s. But in 2014 infants or toddlers with
in the age group 0-4 years have noticeably increased from 28 percent (in 2000) to 38 percent (in 2014) of total
child population. The children in aged 5 to 9 represent 35 percent and 34 percent of the child population in
2000 and 2014 respectively. The early adolescents (10-14), represented 37 percent of the children population
in 2000 compared with the significant decline of 28% in 2014.
