Introduc<strong>in</strong>g Bike Life<br />
Sustrans is collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with seven cities <strong>in</strong> the UK –<br />
Belfast, Birm<strong>in</strong>gham, Bristol, Cardiff, Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, Greater<br />
Manchester and Newcastle – to report on progress<br />
towards mak<strong>in</strong>g cycl<strong>in</strong>g an attractive and everyday<br />
means of travel.<br />
Bike Life is <strong>in</strong>spired by the Copenhagen Bicycle<br />
Account, and is an assessment of cycl<strong>in</strong>g development<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g cycl<strong>in</strong>g conditions, new <strong>in</strong>itiatives and<br />
satisfaction with various aspects of cycl<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
This is the first of two reports, with the second be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
published <strong>in</strong> 2017. The <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> this report<br />
comes from local data, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a representative<br />
survey of over 1,100 residents <strong>in</strong> Birm<strong>in</strong>gham. More<br />

rather than driv<strong>in</strong>g – equivalent to the annual emissions of over 5,000 cars<br />
67p per mile is the sav<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>dividuals and to the local economy<br />
for every mile biked <strong>in</strong>stead of driven – which works out at over<br />
£30 million a year for Birm<strong>in</strong>gham at current levels of cycl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
