The aim of PERCUSSION FUN! is to provide a set of musical activities and<br />

percussion accompaniments for primary school children that will extend their<br />

skills of reading music.<br />

PERCUSSION FUN! is designed for ease of use by non-specialist teachers and involves<br />

little or no preparation.<br />

The activities and accompaniments in this book are based around a selection of<br />

catchy songs in the following ‘Out of The Ark’ seasonal publications;<br />

• A Spring Thing<br />

• Here Comes Summer<br />

• A Combined Harvest<br />

• A Cracking Christmas<br />

Reading music should ideally start at an early age in primary schools through the<br />

playing of available classroom percussion instruments such as tambourines, drums,<br />

wood blocks, bells, glockenspiels, chime bars and so on.<br />

Using simple rhythms and notation, PERCUSSION FUN! adds enjoyment and<br />

progression to the reading of music for children aged 5 -11.<br />

Accompaniments can be played via the CD backing tracks suggested on each page.<br />

Accidentals are not used in any of the accompaniments. Teachers may choose work<br />

sheets from different sections depending on the time of year. Any of the seasonal<br />

HOW TO USE THIS FOLDER<br />

STARTING OUT WITH RHYTHM!<br />

For classes with no previous knowledge of rhythms, start by using a variety of<br />

available cuddly toys, for example;<br />

Can they play the names throughout Verse 1 of the song?<br />

Ask one child to sit down and have a rest.<br />

TAA and TAA-TAI.<br />

Draw the following music notes on the board and let the children play the pattern for<br />

• Start playing on the name of each animal<br />

Sit the children in a circle & place 5 untuned instruments into the middle<br />

of the circle.<br />

Give one child a Spring toy to hold, e.g. a lamb, chicken etc.<br />

Play Verse 1 of the song. While singing the verse, the children pass the<br />

toy around the circle - as they would in a game of ‘Pass the Parcel’.<br />

When the music stops, the child left holding the toy goes into the middle<br />

of the circle and chooses an instrument.<br />

Do this 5 times until all the instruments have been chosen.<br />

(Each time discuss the name of the instrument chosen and how to hold<br />

and play it correctly.)<br />

Sing the song again and the ‘band’ of 5 children repeat the rhythm on the<br />

board during Verse 1.<br />

Draw a new rhythm on the board and ask the band to give their<br />

instruments to 5 different children.<br />

Play Verse 2 as the new ‘band’ play, then proceed through the song in<br />

this manner until 25 children have had a turn at playing. Make sure they<br />

keep playing throughout Verse 4 which is an instrumental verse!<br />

If the class has more than 25 children add more instruments to the circle<br />

in the first part of the game so that no child is left out.<br />

INTRODUCING<br />

TUNED PERCUSSION<br />

Learn the song;<br />

The Sun Came Shining Down<br />

A Combined Harvest<br />

Add actions to the words:<br />

‘And the crops grew higher and higher, higher and higher.’<br />

Show the children a glockenspiel, a xylophone, a metallophone and a set of<br />

chime bars and talk about the instrument names.<br />

Show them the sets of beaters and explain how to hold and play correctly,<br />

using 2 beaters and making the beaters bounce gently.<br />

Sit the children in groups of four and give each child a chance to come<br />

forward and play one of the 4 instruments.<br />

A stop watch may be used if required to make sure each child has an equal<br />

amount of time to experiment with their instrument.<br />

(Tell them that they will have to play very gently or it will be too noisy!)<br />

Go back to the song and explain that, before they do the actions, a child is<br />

going to play each verse on one of the 4 instruments.<br />

This time they are only going to use the 2 letter A’s on the instrument and<br />

play, in time to the beat, using 1 beater in each hand, in a sea-saw motion.<br />

Play Verse 1 on glockenspiel starting on the word ‘sun’<br />

Verse 2 on metallophone starting on the word ‘rain’<br />

Verse 3 on xylophone starting on the word ‘soil’<br />

& Verse 4 on chime bars starting on the word ‘sun’.<br />

Stop playing before ‘and the crops grew higher and higher’<br />

and join in with the actions.<br />

A SEASONAL GAME<br />

Explain to the class that many tunes are based on the<br />

8 notes of a scale.<br />

Sit the children in pairs.<br />

Give out one glockenspiel or tuned percussion instrument to each pair.<br />

Ask them to remove the small letter D from each instrument.<br />

Think of a seasonal phrase or rhyme. For example one of the following;<br />

Summer Sun | Spring is Here | Santa’s Bringing Lots of Toys! | Autumn Leaves<br />

Ask each child to play the phrase on their instrument on each note of the scale, first<br />

starting on middle C at the left of the instrument and playing the phrase on each note<br />

until they reach High C.<br />

This is an ascending scale.<br />

Now start on High C and play down the scale until they reach Middle C.<br />

This is a descending scale.<br />

Change the phrase and play again.<br />

(Try using the children’s’ names as the rhythm pattern.)<br />

Make sure they use 2 beaters changing hands as they play.<br />

Encourage them to sing the words.<br />

READING MUSIC IS EASY!<br />

The children have now encountered a variety of rhythms.<br />

The next pages concentrate on playing tuned percussion and reading music from<br />

the stave.<br />

Reading music is easy!<br />

If children can read words using 26 letters of the alphabet then using<br />

only A - G should not give them a problem!<br />

In this section, after learning about the stave, the pages start by showing the notes<br />

in colour before progressing to black & white.<br />

To begin with some of the letters are also shown.<br />

All accompaniments are designed to be played with the<br />

Out Of The Ark songs shown on each page using the following;<br />

glockenspiels (instruments with small metal bars)<br />

xylophones (wooden bars)<br />

and/or metallophones,(large metal bars)<br />

plus untuned percussion where marked.<br />

Accompaniments now have time signatures.<br />

In time signatures, the bottom number tells us the note value that represents a<br />

single beat, whereas the top number tells us how many of those beats are in a bar.<br />

Children may prefer to write the letter names beneath the notes before they play.<br />

If the child does this they are still reading the music.<br />

Learning to play the later pages may take longer than one lesson and the children<br />

Music writing began in Italy and so Italian is always used as the language of music.<br />

In Italian the word for soft is ‘piano’ & the word for loud is ‘forte’.<br />

When the first piano was made it was called the Piano Forte<br />

(the ‘soft’ ‘loud’) as that was how it could be played.<br />

Nowadays the 1st letter of piano “p” is written at the start of music if it is to be<br />

played softly & the 1st letter of the word forte “f” if it is to be played loudly.<br />

The letter “m” which stands for mezzo (medium) can also be used, therefore<br />

“mp” means medium soft & “mf” medium loud.<br />

INTRODUCING COMPOSITION<br />

On the following page the children write their own song.<br />

IDEA!<br />

Choose a theme depending on the time of year.<br />

Sit the children in pairs and give out 1 glockenspiel to<br />

each pair.<br />

Give out pencils and one page to each pair and make<br />

sure they write their names at the top of their page.<br />

Let them work together to compose their song.<br />

As they work they can try out selections of notes on their instrument.<br />

Remind them to make sure that they play gently and do not disturb the other<br />

groups in the class.<br />

Also explain that it is not a race and that they can take their time to make sure their<br />

tune and words fit together.<br />

Encourage them to play their song on their glockenspiel and ask them to perform it<br />

to the class once they have finished.<br />

Let them choose which child plays and which child sings the words of their song.<br />
