Maltese Facts
Malta is a very small Island!
Size: 316 sqkm
Length: 27.359 km and Width: 14.480 km
We only have a Population of around 450,000!
But thankfully we have a beautiful climate.
A sunny climate with a daily average of 6 hours sunshine
in mid-winter to more than 12 hours in summer.
Our Official languages are Maltese and English; so unlike
other places everyone here will understand you if
you speak English!

Presidential Words
Dear EPSA friends,
Welcome to the 12th Autumn Assembly in Malta! The EPSA Team
and the Reception Committee have been working hard on the organisation
of this event, so just sit back and enjoy it to the fullest.
This year the Autumn Assembly programme is structured under the
theme of ‘Immunopharmacology’. It will be featured in the Symposia,
where you will have the chance to listen to excellent speakers
and take part in the panel discussions. Yet the educational programme
offers you much more – workshops, trainings and the Public
Health Campaign.
Be active, pay attention and hopefully take some key messages with
you back home..
Let’s not forget the evenings though. The Reception Committee has
prepared for you an amazing social programme and I am certain
that EPSA spirit will be strong, allowing you to network with other
participants and exchange knowledge!

Chairperson’s Welcome
Dear participants and friends in EPSA,
I would like to start by welcoming you to the beautiful Island of
Malta which I am proud to call my home.
The EPSA team together with the RC have prepared a wellbalanced
educational programme with the main topic being
"Immunopharmacology- Tailoring complex therapies to meet the
need of patients". In addition to the educational programme we
have also set up an engaging leisure programme that will take
you from the heart of Malta's night life to the luxurious
Montekristo Estate.
However such an event cannot be successful without YOUR help.
Whether it is your first EPSA event or your last, we want this to be
a memorable experience and would like to have your cooperation
throughout the entire assembly.
To conclude, I hope you enjoy your stay and leave with plenty of
pleasant memories of our beautiful island and congress.

Sights - Capital City
Valletta, our island’s capital city
Valletta houses architecture from the 16 th century
onwards, built during the rule of the Order of
St John of Jerusalem, also known as Knights
Hospitaller.
Remember that we will be having a guided tour
of Valletta, scheduled for Friday 30 th October!

Sights - Mdina
Mdina is a medieval citadel situated on a hill in
the western centre of the island. Punic remains
uncovered beyond the city’s walls suggest the
importance of the general region to Malta’s
Phoenician settlers.
Mdina was Malta’s old capital city! Nowadays
Mdina is commonly called the “Silent City” by
natives and visitors.

Sights - Marsaxlokk
Marsaxlokk is a traditional fishing village in the
south-eastern region of Malta.
The village is known for the Marsaxlokk
Market, a large market which takes place around
the whole village on Sundays and tourist market
all days during the week. The inhabitants of the
village are historically fishermen.

Maltese Cuisine
Ravioli are a traditional type of cuisine. They are
made of a filling sealed between two layers of
thin egg pasta dough and are served either in
broth or with a pasta sauce. Ravioli are
usually square, though other shapes are well
known, including circular or semi-circular.
Maltese ravjul are
stuffed with rikotta,
the locally produced
sheep's-milk ricotta,
or with gbejna, the
traditional fresh
sheep's-milk cheese.

Fenek Moqli (Fried rabbit) is a traditional Maltese
recipe for a classic
dish of rabbit
that's fried and finished
with herbs,
garlic and dry white
wine.
Braġoli (Beef rolls) is a traditional Maltese recipe
for a classic dish of flattened beef steaks filled
with a mix of minced beef, bacon, hard-boiled
eggs, parsley and carrot that's cooked in a vegetable,
tomato, potato and red wine sauce.

Sweets
Kannoli tal-Irkotta is a traditional Maltese
recipe for a classic dessert of home-made fried
cannelloni filled with a mix of ricotta cheese,
chocolate and cherries.
Helwa tat-Tork is a common sweet snack on the
islands, specially served at the end of
wedding celebrations and during feasts.
Qubbajt is a
traditional Maltese
recipe for a classic
soft confection of
almonds cooked in a
heavy syrup and
allowed to harden.

Drinks
Cisk is our home grown beer which everyone
seems to love. It is the number one choice in
Malta. Also for those looking after their belly,
don’t worry we have a low cards one just for
you! Cisk Excel! It also comes in a lemon and berry
flavour.
Bajtra liqueur is made from prickly pear. It is a
sweet, delicate drink that tastes
very similar to the actual fruit. It
has always been a favourite in International
nights!

Our Hotel - Baystreet
Found right in the middle of Malta’s top leisure
and entertainment destination - St Julian’s.
The hotel is within easy walking distance of the
sandy beach of St George’s Bay and the vibrant
nightlife of Paceville and St. Julian’s.
It offers a wealth of choice in restaurants, bars,
cinemas, a bowling centre and other entertainment
establishments!

Getting There
Option 1 : Public transport (Bus)
This is the cheaper but it will be more time consuming!
1. Exit the arrivals terminal of the airport
2. Cross the first road carefully, towards the bus terminus
(keep in mind that Maltese people drive on the left-hand
side of the road)
3. Catch the X2 bus (comes by every 30 minutes) to Saint
Julian’s (a town known locally as San Giljan) – journey
takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Always ask the
driver to confirm he is heading to the right direction!
4. Disembark at the terminus which is called
“San Giljan” so pay attention to the electronic voice
which announces the names of upcoming bus stops,
throughout your journey.
5. The bus will stop you a few minutes walk from the hotel.

Getting There
How much does a bus fare cost?
During the winter season, a single journey
ticket costs €1.50. The cost covers travelling
on any number of buses for the next 2
hours which start from the minute the ticket
is bought.
Furthermore, it is highly advisable that you
keep hold of your ticket and store it in a
convenient, handy location until you complete
your journey, as failing to provide
proof of payment may land you a standard
€50 fine!

Shuttle Service
Option 2 : Shuttle service
We will be offering a shuttle service between
the airport and the hotel. The advantages
which this service offers include
less travel time, as well as peace of mind
that you’ll be dropped off right outside the
Baystreet hotel in Saint Julian’s. The price
for this service is €13 euro both ways.
This service will be offered on the 27 th of
October and on the 1 st November.

The Walk
Having gotten off at the bus stop “San Giljan” you should:
1. You should be on the correct side of the road so don’t
cross!
2. Walk back a couple of metres and turn right onto Triq M.
Mangion
3. Walk till the end and turn right again
4. Walk straight ahead until you reach a small open
“square” at which numerous crossroads meet
5. Take the first left onto Triq San Gorg
6. Once you reach a fork in the road, take left again and proceed
(cautiously) down the many steps
7. Carefully cross the first road, climb down a few more
steps, cross the second road and proceed into the shopping
mall
8. Walk straight ahead towards the escalators
9. Congratulations you have finally reached your
destination!!

Policies
Hotel policies:
A security deposit of €40 per person has to be
paid on checking-in. This will be fully refunded
on checking-out, if the hotel room is left intact.
No loud music or noise is permitted after 11pm
Available facilities (free): gym and outdoor swimming
pool (latter depends on the weather at the
time)
Wi-Fi:
Free Wi-Fi will be available in the lobby. Additional
coverage may be extended to individual
hotel rooms at a cost.

Useful information
Electrical supply:
Three-pin sockets are the norm in Malta, so
be sure to bring along a couple of adaptors
with you !!
The law concerning age limits and general behaviour:-
Consumption of alcohol in all public places (incl. the street,
parks, etc.) is forbidden by law. The standard fine for those
failing to comply is €70.
Smoking inside enclosed public areas (e.g. bars, clubs, restaurants)
is forbidden. One may be fined €300+ if caught
smoking.
Admittance (entry) to bars and clubs may only be granted
on presentation of an ID card, passport or driving license: the
legal age being 18 years; rising to 21 years in the case of gentlemen’s
clubs.
Nude bathing (skinny dipping) in public beaches is illegal
throughout the whole country.

St. Julian’s & Paceville
Where to go in St Julian’s/Paceville:
Fast-food: All around the hotel there are fast
foods shops. From McDonalds to pizza places to
kebabs and hotdog vendors.
For a more formal meal, there are many restaurants
from which to choose from, including sushi
bars, steakhouses, pizzerias and much more. All
are found within a short walking distance from
the hotel - 15 mins at the most. If you ever find
yourself in need of a recommendation contact
one of the RC :)

St. Julian’s & Paceville
For a (very) cooling dip in the sea, you can practically
see the sea at St George’s bay just down the
road!
For a couple of drinks, happy hours included;
there are readily available clubs and bars in numerous
outlets within the immediate area surrounding
the hotel. Clubs in Paceville all sell beverages
at roughly the same price: €2.50 for a 33cl
bottle of beer, and €3.50 for a glass of alcohol
with mixer.
ATMs are within 5 minutes walking distance. So if
you are ever in need of some cash ask the RC or
even the hotel staff they will point you in the
right direction.

Tuesday, 27th October
The Opening Ceremony of the congress will be held at a place
called "Footloose". Dinner will be served beforehand.
Dress code: Cocktail
Wednesday, 28th October
Maltese night! You will get to feel a spirit of a real Maltese
party and taste the traditional food of course! Dinner will be
served at the 'Monte Kristo' venue.
Dress code: Maltese traditional colours: white-red
Thursday, 29th October
Time for a theme party: "Jocks vs Nerds"! Did you always
want to be the cool guy or the cheerleader kind of girl? Or did
you prefer to be nerdy and read books all day? This is the
evening to show us!
Dress code: Be cool or Be square

Leisure
Friday, 30th October
Most famous International night will be waiting for you! Each
country will have its table which has to be filled with the goods
you bring from your home country!
Saturday, 31st October
The last night, GALA, is supposed to be grand final of the
event. Therefore you should get your evening clothes in your
suitcase!
Dress code: Elegant dresses and smart suits
PLEASE NOTE:
- That the attendance of the educational program will be
checked prior to departure to the parties!! Only people that
attended at least 75% of the daily programme of the day will !
be allowed to come to the parties!
- All transportation to and from the party venues will be
provided. So please follow flipcharts in the hotel on a day by
day basis.

EPSA Terms
Liaison Secretary (LS):
The LS is the person who acts as the “bridge” between the local and/or
national students of a given country, and other countries. The LSs represent
their country’s opinion during their mandates.
Official Delegate (OD):
ODs are chosen by the local and national student boards to represent
their associations during EPSA’s General Assembly (GA).
EPSA Executive:
The EPSA Executive members are elected during the GA which takes
place during the annual Congress.
EPSA Team:
The EPSA Team is a group of individuals who are appointed by the Executive
for a mandate spanning over a year. The members of the Team make
up EPSA’s various departments, these being:
The Educational Board (EduBoard),the Public Relations (PR) Department,
the External Department, the Mobility Department, the Parliamentary
Council, and the Audit Committee.

Reception Committee (RC):
The RC hosts the congresses and events. For each congress or event, a
group of people send an application to the GA in order to be given official
permission and clearance to host such activities. When this is issued, the
RC is officially elected by the GA; and tasked with ensuring the smooth
running of operations during Congress Week. It is recommended that
participants
direct their questions, queries and requests to their respective LSs or
ODs, who can then forward them to the competent person within the
EPSA Team or the RC.
EPSA Information:
EPSA | The European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (EPSA) was
established in 1978 and represents today around 160000 pharmacy students
from 34 different countries through its 40 members associations.
EPSA exists to develop the interests and opinions of European Pharmacy
Students and to encourage contact and cooperation between them.
