Dear Friends,
New Mission and Vision
Mission: Bridges connects
the housed and homeless
to establish relationships that
lead to greater acceptance
and understanding, social
and economic growth,
and wellbeing.
Vision: The elimination of
the social and economic
divides between the housed
and the homeless.
In keeping with Bridges’ 27-year-long tradition of bringing food,
necessities, and friendship to people who are homeless in
nearby communities, we increased the number of outreach Runs
by 9% this past year. With the help of our wonderful volunteers,
lunch-makers and donors, we brought soup, hot chocolate,
lemonade, and lunch to more than 21,000 people who visited
our distinctive yellow truck. The compassion our volunteers and
staff bring to the Bridges’ Run differentiates Bridges from other
outreach groups. One of our street friends said, “You’ve given
me more than my own father and you’re always there when I
need you.” When we leave a Run, we know we have a made a
difference beyond the food and necessities we’ve distributed.
Our own lives are profoundly changed as well.
We were also thrilled to celebrate the first anniversary of Project
Connect in Newark. Our ID program has helped more than
1,100 individuals obtain a valid NJ State ID or birth certificate.
We found permanent housing for 41 individuals and provided
training and jobs for 50 people. With our dedicated staff and
agency partners, we are truly making an impact on the homeless
community in Newark and helping people rebuild their lives.
This year the board agreed that with growth came the need for
fresh expression and vision for Bridges. Our new mission and
vision statements encompass Bridges’ organizational goals and
the needs of our community.
We thank you and all of our generous supporters: corporations,
foundations and individuals, for growing with us.
Warm wishes,
Amanda Parrish Block
Board Chair

and need to
The Bridges Run
The Run (outreach visit) is
at the heart of our mission.
The Run is an opportunity for
a group of trained volunteers,
along with a Bridges employee
or board member, to go directly
to the streets and shelters
to meet with homeless men,
women and children. On a
typical Bridges Run, our truck
is loaded with fresh, ready-toeat
meals in a bag, sustainable
lunches (with long-shelf life
provisions), and hot soup, as
well as other items of necessity
for those living on the street
or in dire need.
New Run to Penn Station
in NYC
This year, to address the growing number of homeless living
in Penn Station in New York City, we initiated a new Run on
Wednesday evenings to the street adjacent to Penn Station.
Core Volunteers
Twenty Core Volunteers participate in the New York and
Newark Runs at least once a month to greet people and
engage in meaningful conversation. Because they participate
often, Core Volunteers develop and maintain friendships with
homeless people they meet on the Runs.
13,000 Sustainable
Lunches Delivered
These shelf stable meals were given out as second meals
without risk of spoilage.
Soup’s On
2,800 gallons of soup, hot chocolate and lemonade were
served. Fourteen dedicated soup makers prepare soup, hot
chocolate and lemonade for each Run on a rotating basis.
Extra vegetables are added to our soup to make it healthier
and heartier.
New Truck
Through the generosity of the Ludwick Family Foundation,
Bridges was able to purchase a new yellow truck. The truck
has been painted “Bridges yellow” and the logo applied.
Look for it; you can’t miss us!
New Video
A new Bridges video was filmed to incorporate our street
outreach on the Bridges Run and our work at Project
Connect linking clients to services, jobs and housing. Many
thanks to Christopher Harrison of Northern Lights Post, for
donating his time to film and edit the video. It is available on
our website under the “About Us” tab and on YouTube.
Annual Meeting Honorees
Our annual meeting publicly recognizes our accomplishments and challenges, and
honors exceptional volunteers and supporters. The annual meeting was held on June 8,
2015, at the Elks Club in Summit. Over 70 people attended including Bridges Board of
Trustees, staff, volunteers, and supporters.
This year, we honored the
clergy and parishioners of
Redeemer Lutheran Church
in Maywood who made the
difficult decision to close
their doors. In liquidating
and distributing their assets,
they humbled Bridges by
presenting a check in the
amount $94,467. Their legacy
of good works and goodwill
will live on through Bridges
as we extend this gift to help
our neighbors in need.
We also honored several volunteers for their exceptional service:
• Lucy Malatesta is a dedicated volunteer and Run leader.
Lucy is known for her “love letters” that she sends after
every Run, relaying sweet stories about meaningful
interactions with homeless friends.
• Teri Lusty and Ruth O’Brien initiated the Martin Luther King
Day quilt-making and have organized the project for many
years. The quilts are finished by young volunteers and sent
to a shelter so that a child arriving at a shelter receives a
warm, cuddly blanket that is theirs to keep.
• Sally Golding and Jane Murphy of The Christ Child Society
have partnered with Bridges and have chaired the Summit
School Supply Drive and Distribution for local children in
need for four years. Their leadership has resulted in nearly
400 children every year receiving a backpack and school
supplies, valued at $75 each, which is a huge savings to
their parents.
MLK Day of Service 2015
More than 100 volunteers of all ages made lunches, sorted
clothing, bagged toiletries, made 34 fleece quilts and
wrapped hundreds of books with notes for children arriving
in shelters.
Winter Distribution
Homeless people living on the streets are unable to save
their winter goods from year to year. Beginning in November,
Bridges gave out 2,500 seasonal items including hooded
sweatshirts, hats, gloves, thermal underwear, boots, coats,
blue jeans, hand and foot warmers – and new this year,
“body warmers.”
Children in Shelters
Children in Newark shelters enjoy monthly birthday parties
and activity days sponsored by Bridges and organized
by area high school students. For the holidays, children
received new pajamas and toys. The Rotary Clubs of Summit
and Madison joined together to give 101 new coats to
children at the Newark Emergency Residency Shelter.
of Operations was enthusiastically received at the annual meeting.
Our Brown Bag Bash
Many thanks to everyone who attended or supported this year’s Brown Bag
Bash, held on March 28 at the Maritime Parc in Liberty State Park, Jersey City.
It was a glorious evening of great
company, exciting live and silent
auctions, good food, and a wonderful
dance band that got the crowd
moving. Best of all, the event raised
critical funds that will help our many
neighbors in need.
Special thanks and congratulations to
Trustee and Auction Chair, Kim Sleeman,
and the entire Bash committee – you all
did a phenomenal job!
First Anniversary Breakfast
Bridges friends, supporters, partners and staff gathered on
April 21, 2015, to celebrate the first anniversary of Bridges’
Project Connect located at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in the
epicenter of Newark’s homeless population in the Penn
Station area of Newark. A niche that we quickly filled was
to help more than 1,100 people who are homeless to receive
a NJ State ID or a certified copy of their birth certificate.
A valid ID is the first step in rebuilding a life. Through
Project Connect, 50 people were placed in jobs and 41
found permanent housing, in addition to many others who
received medical attention and social services.
Recreation Center in Newark this past winter when the
overnight temperature dipped to below 16 degrees for two
days. Bridges provided food, blankets and toiletries to the
warming center, helped to get the word out to the homeless
community, and offered rides from Penn Station to the
warming center.
Teens Tackle Homelessness
More than 25 high school students from public and private area schools organize a
conference on homelessness for their peers, in addition to street Runs and events for
children in Newark shelters.
Founder’s Award
Founders’ Awards are given to high school juniors or seniors
who have faithfully engaged to support the work of Bridges
and have proved to be a friend to the homeless.
Teen Conference
More than 80 students participated in this year’s
Teens Tackle Homelessness Conference, “Youth and
Homelessness.” Keynote speaker Kevin Ryan, CEO of
Covenant House International, the largest charity in the
Americas devoted to serving homeless and trafficked
children and youth, shared harrowing tales of the lives
of homeless teens, as well as stories about the resiliency
of some teens and how they overcame challenges. The
group was also riveted by a speaker in her mid-twenties
who told of her experience as a former suburban teen
who became homeless and has since put her life back
together. The teen steering committee also highlighted
the major causes of teen homelessness. Thanks to our
SUMMIT
Welcome Neighbors
Every Friday, we open our doors in Summit to neighbors
living on the streets or living day-to-day. As many as 15
individuals on any given Friday visit Bridges to shower and
receive new underwear, clothing and food.
Summit Health Fair
Bridges hosted its second free health fair for Summit
residents on September 8, 2014. Twenty-five adults attended
and received eye exams from the Commission for the Blind
and Visually Impaired. Four people screened were given
vouchers for prescription glasses from New Eyes for the
Needy and taken by a Bridges volunteer to the optical store.
Community Health of Overlook Medical Center provided
screening for blood pressure and glucose screening for all
twenty-five attendees. The event was sponsored by a grant
from the Summit Area Public Foundation.
School Supplies
Just in time for school, 385 children eligible for free and
reduced lunches received new backpacks and school supplies
at Bridges on August 27 and 28, 2014. For the fifth year, Bridges
Outreach and Christ Child Society of Summit collaborated to
collect hundreds of binders, spiral and composition notebooks,
pens, pencils and much more. In addition, $2,500 worth of
additional supplies were purchased with grants from the
Summit Junior League, The Summit Luminary Fund, Merrill
Lynch and private donations. It is estimated that each child
received supplies valuing $75. Parents were able to use the
financial resources that would have been used for school
supplies to pay for food, rent, and other necessities.
Financial Overview
Bridges does not seek or receive federal
or state funding. In the 2014-2015 fiscal
year, our income was received from one
annual appeal, the Brown Bag Bash
(a fundraising event), foundation grants,
individual donors, matching gifts, and
interest income.
Donations: Bridges received and distributed donations
of more than 63,000 brown bag meals including 13,000
sustainable lunches, 2,500 seasonal items including coats,
boots, pajamas and toys for sheltered children. Literally
tons of donated clothing were also distributed. Our donors
include groups from houses of worship, clubs, schools,
corporations, and individuals. Through careful inventory of
our distribution, we estimate the value of these donations to
be $529,808.
Overhead: Administration and fundraising are 11.8% of our
overall expenses.
