NOT ALL NEW IDEAS ARE BAD OR NEW:
‣ Ø Maybe the new ideas are good ones.
‣ Ø Maybe the idea was one that couldn’t be implemented earlier, but the
time has come.
Often there is only one new campus initiative; how can International fit into that?
‣ Ø Tell your story in the language of the initiative.
‣ Ø Possibly re-cast your unit priorities.
‣ Ø Consider a joint effort with another unit.
New presidents use shortcuts to make decisions.
‣ Ø Units not meeting their budgets are good targets.
THE BUDGET IS GOOD COVER FOR DECISIONS:
ABOVE ALL:
‣ Ø Do your job; help flatten the new president’s learning curve, especially
during the first 100 days.
‣ Ø Practice fellowship.
‣ Ø Learn from the new president’s speeches.
‣ Ø Do not try to over-impress the new president.
‣ Ø Do not constantly beat a path to his door.
‣ Ø Be realistic about your unit problems and solutions.
‣ Ø Be concise; the new president has a lot to digest.
THE NEW PRESIDENT WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT STYLE.
‣ Ø Adapt to it ASAP! You’re not going to change a new present; he or she
is going to change you. Practice a little followership.
Take Fats Waller’s advice: “Find out what they like, and how
they like it, and let him have it just that way.”
Never say: “We have always done it this way.”
Never share negative feelings about the new president and/or
spouse.
Never, ever, compare the new president to the old one, even
when you think no one is listening!
REMEMBER, FEW CHANGES ARE PERMANENT:
‣ Ø Change is difficult to make happen.
‣ Ø Sometimes, things revert to the mean.
‣ Ø Change, when it happens, takes time.
‣ Ø There will be more changes after these changes!
