Last year for <strong>the</strong> Halloween issue, I heralded <strong>the</strong> importance of <strong>the</strong> blood sacrifice <strong>in</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g solid mechanical<br />

results. This year I’m dedicat<strong>in</strong>g this column to <strong>the</strong> lost. I’m not talk<strong>in</strong>g about tools destroyed <strong>in</strong> service. They<br />

don’t count. If you have a carcass, it’s not really gone. Better yet, if it is a Craftsman carcass, Sears will replace it.<br />

No, I’m tell<strong>in</strong>g ghost stories--stories about tools that are gone. Or are <strong>the</strong>y?<br />

What about <strong>the</strong> rattle from <strong>the</strong> dash that you’ve never resolved? Maybe it’s your 3/8 <strong>in</strong>ch socket that hasn’t been<br />

seen s<strong>in</strong>ce you last worked on <strong>the</strong> wiper l<strong>in</strong>kage. It is gone but it still haunts you and your car.<br />

Last weekend I dropped a hex bit while<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to detach <strong>the</strong> fiddly tach generator<br />

that resides at <strong>the</strong> back of <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

is secured to <strong>the</strong> head with impossible to<br />

access allen screws. The metallic bit hit<br />

several th<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong> way down as<br />

evidenced by <strong>the</strong> metallic r<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g it made<br />

on its journey to <strong>the</strong> ne<strong>the</strong>rworld.<br />

Unfortunately, <strong>the</strong> last sound was not <strong>the</strong><br />

satisfy<strong>in</strong>g flat cl<strong>in</strong>k of it hitt<strong>in</strong>g concrete. I<br />

have looked everywhere without f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that bit. I even ran an <strong>in</strong>spection camera <strong>in</strong>side<br />

<strong>the</strong> bell hous<strong>in</strong>g, under <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory that <strong>the</strong> bit had<br />

bounced through <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spection port for <strong>the</strong><br />

flywheel. The bit has simply vanished <strong>in</strong>to th<strong>in</strong> air.<br />

Science tells us this cannot be so. Dictionary.com<br />

details how matter cannot simply vanish under<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ary circumstances <strong>in</strong> its def<strong>in</strong>ition of <strong>the</strong> law<br />

of conservation of mass:<br />
