The look of the town is determined
by its surface waters:
Fehér-Körös (White Cris) separating
Gyula from Gyulavári,
Élővíz-csatorna (Live-water
Canal) connecting three settlements
and string of lakes /
ponds surrounding the town.
The first people appeared
along the Fehér-Körös on the
higher, flood free areas at the
time of the Neolithic age.
The name of Körös-culture
refers to it. Artefacts from
the copper, bronze and iron
ages prove the existence of
former settlements.
