October 2015 Health and Safety “An Ounce of Prevention” While most of the time, the common mosquito is a nuisance which can be largely ignored, the weeks following Thailand’s monsoon season raises its potential threat level dramatically. With the amount of rainfall that accompanies the summer months, the conditions are perfect for the breeding of mosquitos, which become the harbingers of bad tidings, in the form of dengue fever. Dengue fever is a virus carried by the mosquito, which the residents of tropical countries are all too familiar with. It afflicts roughly 50 million people yearly, with about a half million of these cases being severe enough to require hospitalization. Once one has been bitten and infected, the symptoms usually begin to show between five and eight days later, and include: sudden chills and pain around the eyes, high fever, headaches, nausea and vomiting/diarrhea, and a skin rash which typically covers much of the torso. As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” and luckily, the government agrees! On the 22 nd of October, REPS was visited by a team of fumigators who thoroughly sprayed our campus with an insecticide targeting these tiny biological terrorists. Our campus has been purged of the menace, and our school nurse is relieved that she can once again focus on the never-ending battle against skinned knees, bloodied noses, and premature picking of scabs! At home, we suggest taking preventative measures of your own, such as: emptying containers of standing water, wearing long pants and sleeves outdoors during the evening hours and keeping some mosquito repellant handy. October 2015 Secondary Trip REPS Education trip to Civil Aviation Training Center, Bangkok Our trip to Civil Aviation Training Center in Bangkok was on Friday 11th September 2015. Students M.4-M.6 visited the Air Traffic Control Radar Simulator and Aircraft Workshop. Trips like this help our students to select their course at the university. Students had a chance to see what the Civil Aviation Training Center has to offer as a career choice and future decision. Choosing a university to attend and knowing what different subjects, different places have to offer is a good start to a successful career path. REPS’ goal is to motivate students to find what they really want to do in the future, to make the right choices and to know how to attend a school to match their goals. These trips are a really good experience that REPS students learn a lot from.
