elcome to the October Edition of the Gamefisher
Wmagazine. The warmer weather is starting
to arrive and with that the number of boats and
people heading out onto the water is beginning
to rise. I hear the fishing is still a little bit hard,
but there have been some nice fish being caught
nevertheless. Let’s hope the warmer water arrives
soon to bring a few more fish into the Bay of Plenty!!
The Fixation Charters Trout Tournament took place
on the 3rd and 4th of October, and a good number of
trout were caught over the weekend. Thanks again
to Tony and his team for again hosting this event. The
TSFC/MMSFC Interclub Tournament was held on
the 10th and 11th of October, and it was great to see
so many TSFC anglers sign up for this tournament,
with the upshot being that our team brought the
cup back to its rightful home. Well done all those
TSFC members that assisted in this great win.
Looking into November we have the Ray White
Papamoa/Mount Motorcycles Snapper/Kingfish
Tournament and then the Top Catch Heavy
Metal Jigging & Casting Tournament two weeks
later, so things are starting to heat up on the
Tournament front. As always there are also
the Club nights every Tuesday and Thursday,
building up to the Ham Night in early December.
Great to see so many people enjoying the Rugby
World Cup games in the comfort of the clubrooms.
We have had some awesome crowds come along,
and enjoy the comradery as the All Blacks have
progressed to make it back to back World Cups.
As I write this, the Final has been played and our
guys have achieved a first, with Richie McCaw
lifting the cup for the second time. Strange how an
All Blacks win can lift the whole spirit of a nation!!!
Until next time, keep safe out
on the water, and hopefully
the fish will arrive soon to
help make this next season
as good as last year.
T
Roly’s Report
he 2015 event has ranked as the strongest El
Nino seen since 1997/98 and we have seen some
interesting sights at sea. Consistent westerly winds
and east to west currents have given the illusion of a
cool sea state with nothing over 16 degrees, yet sun
fish, the odd flying fish sighting suggest more than
just cool water….enough evidence at least to keep
us excited about the approaching game season. The
good news is records show it is getting warmer and
lighter, we pick up an extra hour of day light from
October to November and the temp are forecast
to be another 2-3degrees warmer into November.
I was speaking with our Patron Jill Gray the other
day and Jill’s theory on the up and coming game
season sounds good. Notably good game seasons
over the last 30 years have years ending in five
and six, so with the 2015-16 season looming I
for one am signing up to that theory. Thanks Jill!
It has been a month of ticking boxes starting off with
the opening of the trout season and of course the
newly branded Monster Trout Tournament which was
held on the 4-6th October. Great to have Hamills
Tauranga on board this year and many thanks to
TWL , Pine Sawmills NZ and Kilwell for their ongoing
support and of course the Dolman family for sharing
their lake edge slice of paradise and warm hospitality.
The fishing was outstanding with both quality of
the fish averaging over 2kg and quantity averaging
almost two fish per person for the event. Deryk
Neilsen did an outstanding job as weighmaster, as
always, and has put together a full report in this issue.
better than expected so everyone was able to fish
hard all weekend. The fish tally was 66 for the
Mount and 108 for Tauranga and more importantly
the quality was fish delivered 131 to 264 point
victory for Tauranga and now the shield is proudly
being displayed in our Clubroom. Well done team.
Congratulations to Frank van Vroonhoven who
is now a world record holder for the Southern
Mandarin Dogfish. Frank had this shark positively
identified with Te Papa who indicated it was a very rare
species, a female and the biggest they have seen.
Frank submitted this information to IGFA who created
this as a new species and issued a world record.
Lastly, Christmas is knocking and the silly season is
on us for group bookings at the Club. We are filling up
but would love to accommodate you and your group
here at the Club for your end of year get together.
We have set menus for larger groups and platter
options so give us a call to arrange things for you!
Tight Lines & happy fishing!
Roly
Aaron Courtney has been drawing the crowds, asking
the easy as well as the hard questions at Quiz Night the
first Wednesday of every Month. We will have one more
Quiz night on the 2nd December and will have January
off, returning in the New Year on the 3rd February.
What a month of Rugby it’s been with the ITM cup
first off (I’m not allowed to crow on about Hawke’s
Bay) so on to our ITM Sweepstakes and well done
to Andrew Watts, our own Aaron Courtney and AJ
Russell taking out 1st-3rd consecutively. The Rugby
World Cup was everything it should have been with
massive upsets and some of the best footie and
individual performances we have ever seen. What
a ride! Watching our men in black conquer the
world to bring home the Webb Ellis Cup. Thanks
to everyone that came down to the Club for our
series of Black Out breakfasts, the atmosphere was
awesome and the tucker top notch! The pressure
was on the Galley and I thought they did a great job.
The special liquor licences that were granted I think
reflected good common sense policy making, and
hopefully have set a precedent so we may enjoy NZ
sport in our Club no matter where it is in the world.
The Inter-Club Tournament was staged on the 10-
11th October and it was clear from the start there
were stirrings of determination from our guys and
girls to win back the Interclub Shield that had not
been on our wall since 2008. A solid turn out from
our members indicated that we were in with a good
chance and with the forecast actually turning out
2008 was the last time the Interclub shield was
raised by the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club. So this year it
was with a new found determination that the TSFC rallied
to put together an awesome team of 57 anglers. The
team possessed the perfect mix of the youth that brought
endurance to fish all night along with more senior members
that brought know how and collective years of experience.
up for 3 hours on a 30 wide setup. The beast finally
materialised into a very stroppy Bigeye Thresher of
153.2kg. This fish has been submitted to the NZSFC
for the 1st and heaviest for the season. Well done guys!
Highlights of the InterclubTournament included the
With the weather last weekend turning out better than expected
the boats spread themselves to the edges of Chart 54.
Saturday saw 43 fish weighed in at the TSFC weigh
station, half of these from the Mount setting the
competitive tone that always exists at this event. Clearly
many boats stayed away and choosing to fish the
night bite and up size the weights on the catch cards.
Noticeable was the east/west current that was flowing
strongly against the SW winds that made for some
challenging conditions. The inshore the fishing was
both days pretty tough, luckily it was the offshore
reefs and islands that produced the better fish.
The team off Bandit was fishing out wide for us, and doing
a great job with Tarakihi and Bluenose on board. Then
everything stepped up a gear when Justin Tombleson
hooked a beast of a fish that proceeded to beat him
Justin Tombleson & the ‘Bandit’ Crew
Tom Gollop, Tony Brown took another first place with a
7.97kg Snapper as did Gary Rae with a 2.58kg Kahawhai.
Well done to everyone that represented our Club. It was
absolutely magic to see everyone coming together like that
to get the win! Let’s make sure this trophy stays with us
now, so mark this one on the calendar for next year!
TAURANGA GAMEFISHER

ur best trout tournament yet. Pretty good weather,
Othough a little breezy on the Sunday morning, and
good fishing, a little harder for some of us perhaps. As
always, the Dolmans treated us unbelievably well, and the
spit roast and boil up on the Saturday night (lamb kindly
donated by Chris Jensen) was epic. Not to mention the
fresh fish on the Friday night kindly brought down for us
to dine on by Jodie Gollop. Thank you both.
The stats for the tournament are listed below over the page
and make some fine reading. The winning fish caught by
Van Busel back and a number of new entrants, including
Roly, our club manager. Luke and Tony plus Kane Spiers
flew back in from some top game fishing in Cairns to
go fishing for trout. Talk about chalk and cheese. Also
great to see Kevin Powers from Bay Fisher and his team,
including Cade Burton who picked up the top junior prize.
One of our regulars, Alistair Young (and Debbie)
were unable to make it this year through family
commitments, so Alistair very kindly lent their boat
for the weekend. Wow, some gesture Alistair. He did
make up for not fishing the tournament later in the
week when they managed to catch several good fish.
Stand out fishing craft was the platform constructed
and used by the boys from Metalco, complete with luxury
fly bridge, and dual helm controls. Making its maiden
voyage on the Friday afternoon, it sure turned a few
heads. Brilliant, guys! See the photo below. (insert photo)
Sam Jensen
As always, a big thank you to our sponsors for the
tournament, Transport Wholesale, Pine Sawmills, Hamills
and Kilwell. I hope you all took advantage of your time
entering the tournament up at Hamills to have a look
around. Thanks Stacey. Also thanks to James Morrison
from Gough / TWL for your support, and Jeff from Kilwell
for the prize table.
Sam Jensen, was a horse. Some pretty decent fish caught
and weighed, but that one was a street ahead, going well
over 4 kg. Some of us have fished for a long time and still
not caught one that good. Well done Sam. Dad, Chris, also
weighed a fish over 3kg to picked up one of the top prizes.
Also, congratulations to Johno Bell for his landbased fish,
top work. Our lady anglers featured well in the results
with Tamara Henry and Rebecca Dolman bringing in good
catches, and Cami Hancock getting the condition factor
prize. Tamara’s fish was 2nd overall. Cami’s partner Hayden
again makes the top list this year, as does Aiden Brown.
This year saw the return of many of our regular fishers,
though some were unable to make it. Good to see Dutchie
NZSFC Brief, October 2015
i all, another month, already. Not so much on
Hthe NZSFC front, with our first Board meeting
being the weekend 14th November. More this
month about Fisheries Management and the various
things that are happening at present on that front.
Firstly, there is the on-going Southwick Project which has
been commissioned by the NZ Marine Research Foundation
on behalf of NZSFC through LegaSea. Research leader,
Rob Southwick spoke at the NZSFC AGM in Christchurch,
and has a wealth of experience in conducting these
kind of surveys on behalf a number of organisations,
including the United Nations, right around the world. The
following statement made by NZMRF is no idle claim:-
R e c re a t i o n a l f i s h i n g i s n o w re c o g n i s e d a s
a legitimate, valuable industry in Alaska, Florida,
Costa Rica, Panama Mexico and Australia. It’s time
New Zealanders understood and acknowledged the
value recreational fishing brings to our great nation.
Rob made the assertion that Kiwis need to understand
with both some senior MPI staff and some commercial
fishermen, who were interesting to talk to, as well as
equally concerned about the on-going state of our local
fisheries. The process was about explaining how to make a
submission, which can be done electronically ( and I would
encourage you to do so. ), as well as talking about what the
process will be after that public submission phase, which
concludes on the 11th December. Again, there’s a whole
heap of information on the website: - fisheries.review@
mpi.govt.nz and I urge you to have a good look at it.
NZSFC through its Fisheries Management team will be
making submission, have already had a meeting with the MPI
staff who are conducting the review, and will definitely be part
of the process, representing our recreational membership.
I’ll try and keep our club membership updated, however
if you require any further information, please contact me.
I realise that most of you would consider this sort of
stuff about as exciting as prepping a hull for anti-fouling.
Having been involved now for several years, I have to say
I have a totally different outlook on this work, and find
some of the aspects really interesting. It is fascinating
being involved in the process and see some of the
dynamics at work, not to mention some of the really
interesting people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with.
I personally would really like to see some of our up and
comers becoming involved and would encourage anyone
who has an interest in the future of recreational fishing to
become involved. If you would like to, please contact me
that they are not just involved in a recreational
activity. We are also involved in a quite sizeable
industry, and understand its place and its value.
There’s a heap of literature out there on the subject
and well worth having a read up on. Have a look
at: http://www.nzmrf.org.nz/ as a starting point
Of course this kind of research doesn’t come cheaply,
and the NZMRF are looking to raise about a quarter of
its total cost through the following crowdfunding site. It
runs until the end of November :-https://givealittle.co.nz/
fundraiser/whatsfishingworth/. Every little bit helps and if
you have any care about the future state of our fishery, you
will comprehend the importance of this type of research.
The other development which has occurred in the
fisheries management arena is the announcement in
September by MPI that they were initiating a review of
the Fisheries Management systems, to be completed by
mid next year. The first part of this process is a series
of public consultation meetings around the country, which
began here in Tauranga on Tuesday 4th of November. I
attended, and had a couple of interesting discussions
Sean calls home to his wife and says, “Ava, I
have been asked to go fishing on ‘Lough Ree’
with my boss and several of his friends. We’ll
be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity
for me to get that promotion I’ve been
wanting so would you please pack me enough
clothes for a week and set out my rod and
tackle box. We’re leaving from the office and
I’ll stop by the house to pick them up. Oh,
and, please pack my new blue silk pyjamas.”
Ava thinks this all sounds a little fishy but
being a good wife she does exactly what
her husband asked. The following weekend
he comes home a little tired but otherwise
looking good. The wife welcomes him home
and asks if he caught many fish? He says,
“Yes! Lot’s of trout, some salmon, and a
few pike. But why didn’t you pack my new
blue silk pyjamas like I asked you to do?”
“I did, Sean; they’re in your tackle box.”
