November 2015
Dear Friends,
It’s hard to believe that we’re nearing the end of another
year. While summer camp and lounging out by the pool
are now distant memories, one thing that we don’t forget
is to appreciate all that we have. Thanks to the Sam
Pomeranz Jewish Community Center family, we are able
to continue providing valuable programs and services to
the greater Syracuse community.
Each year at this time we
remind you that our Jewish
Community Center is
here to support you and
hundreds of other local
families. The JCC often transcends this role by becoming
a necessity in the lives of those we serve. Whether it
is child care so a parent can work, fitness programs to
enhance wellness, or outreach and referrals for seniors
by our recently re-established Neighborhood Advisor
Program, the services we provide are an important part
of the daily lives of those who utilize our center.
Deeds of giving are the very foundations
of the world.
– Jewish saying derived from the Mishna,
Pirkei Avot 1:2
Your past contributions to our end-of-year campaign
have enabled us to meet the needs of our members and
neighbors. We once again look to your generosity as we
seek to maintain our key place within the community.
Please remember that when you give to the JCC you
provide a gift that will last throughout the year. Your
gift will help shape the lives of our youth and enrich
I care about the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse and its future. I also identify with and understand
the importance of the JCC to Jewish life in this community. I would like to make the following contribution*:
q Pillar $1,000
q Founder $500
q Supporter $250
q Patron $100
the lives of our seniors. Your gift will enhance the lives
of those who fill our fitness center with strength and
determination as they maintain healthy lifestyles, and it
eases parental stress so parents can work and provide for
their families knowing that their children are well cared
for at the JCC.
As this year draws to a close, help us continue our long
tradition of serving the diverse needs of those in our
community. Your generous donation will positively
impact the lives of many Central New Yorkers with
quality programs and services rooted in Judaic
traditions and teachings. Please make a tax-deductible
contribution to the JCC today. Your end-of-year gift
will help ensure that our essential programming and
services continue moving forward throughout the
coming year.
Sincerely,
Supporting Your Center
Your continued financial
contributions, gifts, grants and
endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger
community six days per week,
year round. Funds raised are
critical to daily operations, special
programming, future development
and improvements, and
scholarships and financial aid.
Matching Gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
Matching Gift Programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute Cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor
the memory of a loved one, the JCC
welcomes tax-deductible gifts to one of
our many endowment or special funds.
(See the tributes on page 33.) The JCC
will send an acknowledgement card to
the individual (or next of kin) in whose
name the contribution is made. Tribute
cards recognize someone special and help
the JCC. For more information, contact
Mariette DeWolf at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
End-of-Year Donation
Designate your United Way
donation to support the JCC
If you participate in the United Way
Community Campaign where you work
or as an individual donor, please consider
designating all or part of your gift to the
JCC of Syracuse. This can easily be done
on the back of your pledge card. Your
generous contribution to the JCC through
the United Way donor program will go a
long way in supporting your JCC.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Public support is imperative to the JCC of Syracuse’s survival. The center depends
on these donations for a full 7% of its annual budget. We recently mailed out
our end-of-year campaign letters
requesting your generous support.
For your convenience, a copy of this
letter is reprinted on page 3 along
with the form to use for making a taxdeductible
end-of-year contribution if
you haven’t already done so. No gift
is too small and all donations to the
JCC are greatly appreciated!
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 23) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
For more information, contact
Mariette DeWolf at 315-445-2040,
ext. 112.
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor Program assists seniors
The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community
Center recently became re-established
as a Neighborhood Advisor Program
site offering outreach, information and
referral services to seniors in the DeWitt,
Fayetteville and Manlius
areas. The program is part
of the Onondaga County
Department of Adult & Long
Term Care Services.
Sharon Kieffer is the
JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor
and assists seniors age 60
and older by providing
information about programs
available in the community
and by helping to obtain
necessary services so that they can remain
living independently in their homes.
Kieffer has many years of experience
providing case management services in the
healthcare and long-term care fields.
“I’m here to help seniors and their
families navigate the system so they can
get the right services for their particular
situation,” says Kieffer. “I make house
calls to help fill out forms and deal with
issues relating to Social Security, Medicare
and other benefit programs. I also make
Sharon Kieffer, the JCC’s
Neighborhood Advisor.
presentations to senior groups so that
they know this service is available. All of
the Neighborhood Advisor services are
provided on an individual basis and at no
cost to seniors.”
The Neighborhood
Advisor Program is funded
in part by a grant from
the Onondaga County
Department of Adult & Long
Term Care Services. The
JCC’s Neighborhood Advisor
Program has a long history
of serving Syracuse’s eastern
suburbs.
“I am delighted that we
were once again chosen by
the county as a partner in providing such
a valuable service to seniors,” said Marci
Erlebacher, JCC executive director. “The
program nicely complements all of the
social and wellness services that we offer
such as our fitness classes and senior
kosher meal program.”
For more information about the JCC’s
Neighborhood Advisor Program and to
make a referral, call Sharon Kieffer at 315-
Power of light
By Rabbi Evan Shore
William Shakespeare once wrote, “How far
that little candle throws his beams! So shines
a good deed in a weary world.” Imagine
for a moment living in the darkest period
in Jewish history. The Jewish people were
living in their own land, Israel, yet the Greek
domination brought darkness to the Jews
even on the brightest and clearest of all days.
Any sort of Jewish observance was forbidden
by royal decree under the penalty of
execution. Yet, many Jews refused to permit
the flames of Judaism be extinguished.
Others fought to ensure the light continue
to grow in intensity.
Of course the light is symbolic of our Holy
Torah and its traditions. The Greeks felt it
was outdated, irrelevant and needed to be
replaced. The Jews at this time in history
took a stand; old does not mean outdated,
ancient does not connote being out of touch.
The candles we light on Chanukah
commemorate a Divine miracle God
performed for the Jewish people. The Jews
stood up and fought for a principle that has
weathered the ages and attacks.
Chanukah teaches us the beauty of the
chain of tradition that finds its roots at
Mount Sinai, the day God revealed Himself
to the Children of Israel. It is this light we
kindle nightly during the eight day holiday of
Chanukah. The Macabees would be proud
to know that the light they fought for, and
which many died for, still shines brightly.
What a beautiful holiday where both parent
and child light the holy menorah, carrying
on the chain of tradition! This is the greatest
proof of continuity. Let the beams of the
candles glow brightly in all of our homes.
Infant Level
• Must be six-weeks old by September 6, 2016
We offer the highest quality of care to our
youngest members in the Syracuse area. To
maintain a developmentally appropriate
environment for our infants, they are
separated into two age groups: Infant I
and Infant II. Infants who are 6 weeks to
12 months old at time of enrollment are
placed in the Infant I classroom. Infants
who are 12 months to 24 months at the
time of enrollment are placed in the
Infant II classroom.
The ECDP provides a responsive
environment that supports and encourages
exploration through a variety of classroom
routines and experiences. Infant caregivers
focus on daily routines such as hellos and
goodbyes, diapering and toileting, feeding,
dressing and soothing to sleep as part of
the curriculum. These one-on-one routines
help to build positive relationships between
infant and caregiver, promoting trust and
allowing infants to feel secure in their
environment.
Once infants have developed a
trusting relationship with their caregivers
they will start to gain new skills and
participate more actively in daily routines.
The teachers are then able to provide
intentional indoor and outdoor experiences
that allow children to learn while imitating
and pretending, connecting with music
and movement, exploring with sand and
water and creating with art.
Toddler Level
• Must be 18-months old by September 6, 2016
Toddler children are at an age when they
establish secure attachments with their
caregivers more quickly and are now eager
to experience their world. They react to
what they experience through their senses
and physical activity. ECDP teachers
provide intentional experiences for
toddlers through a variety of indoor and
outdoor experiences.
Learning materials that match the
children’s growing abilities and interests
are provided and the children start to
explore objects and begin to use them
purposefully. While playing with toys,
imitating and pretending, exploring
sand and water, creating with art and
going outdoors, the toddlers learn to
communicate and socialize with peers and
adults, to think mathematically and to
discover like scientists.
Toddlers start to enjoy special
programming outside of the classroom
setting, such as Toddler Tango and gym
class. Toddlers are placed into classrooms
according to their chronological age.
Children do not need to be toilet trained,
and when appropriate, toilet training will
be incorporated into one of the goals for
your child.
Early Childhood Development Program
Three-Year Old Level
• Must be age 3 by December 1, 2016
With kindergarten just two years away,
this is an important time for every child
to learn that the world is bigger than
imagined. Children learn new skills
and concepts through our thematic,
hands-on approach to learning. Daily
activities are carefully planned to promote
children’s social, emotional and cognitive
development. Our teachers are trained
to recognize differences in rates of
development within this age group, and
individualize instruction to meet every
child’s needs. Materials and activities
are appropriately tailored in an effort to
challenge children’s abilities while building
their self-confidence.
Throughout the year, children will
discover the wonder of the world they live
in. All of our three-year olds are actively
engaged in group discussions, long-term
studies, sensory play, cooking, process art
and more. Our three-year olds are reading
stories, singing songs and playing their way
through the day. We also tailor gym time
with our specialized gym instructor to
the needs of our three-year olds. We play
outside every day, weather permitting, on
our beautiful fenced-in playgrounds.
With all of these wonderful
activities happening in our three-year
old classrooms, the Early Childhood
Development Program provides a well
rounded and positive learning experience
for your child.
Pre-K Level
• Must be age 4 by December 1, 2016
Our oldest children explore the world
through our hands-on, developmentally
appropriate approach to learning. We
include both child initiated play and
teacher-directed academic experiences
on a daily basis. Planned lessons and
activities allow teachers to informally
and continually assess each child in order
to effectively modify and individualize
instruction.
Academically, we focus on exposing
children to the skills and concepts needed
to succeed in kindergarten. This includes
creative expression, math and reading
readiness, along with fine and gross motor
skill development to help each child learn,
grow and succeed. Each classroom is also
equipped with a SMART board where the
children are engaged in daily interactive
lessons which promote creativity and
critical thinking.
Children at the Pre-K level attend
many theme-related field trips. In the
fall our classes will visit the apple and
pumpkin farms. Later in the school year
we’ll visit the MOST, F-M Planetarium and
Fayetteville Free Library.
Happy Chanukah
December brings with it Chanukah, the
“Festival of Lights,” and our classroom
Chanukah parties that have become a
favorite ECDP tradition! Our Chanukah
parties will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 8 for
rooms 6, 7, 8, A, B and 2. The boys and
girls will be eating potato lakes and jelly
doughnuts. Songs will be sung, dreidels
will be spun, candles on the menorah will
be lit and stories of brave Maccabees told.
Each child will also receive a specially
decorated goodie bag filled with a dreidel,
Chanukah stickers and chocolate gelt to
take home.
If your child will not be scheduled
to attend our program on Dec. 8 for the
Chanukah Party, you may pay for extra
time if space is available. Otherwise,
parents may bring in their child and
STAY WITH THEM for the duration
of the party. NYS licensing regulations
requires a specific student/teacher ratio be
maintained at all times in every classroom.
Ratios vary according to age. Thank you
for your understanding and cooperation
with this matter.
PJ Library
The JCC has partnered with the PJ Library
(PJ for pajamas) which visits our program
monthly. Children are encouraged to wear
their pajamas to school on PJ Library days!
The PJ Library coordinator reads stories,
sings songs and plans activities with the
children. The program offers free, highquality
Jewish books and music each
month to children ages six months to eight
years all across North America to parents
raising Jewish children.
Winter Vacation Camp
The Early Childhood Development
Program will be closed for winter break
Dec. 24–Jan. 1. There will be a vacation
camp offered for our working parents who
need extended-day and full-day child care
on Dec. 24, 28, 29, 30 and 31. The teachers
who will be caring for children that week
may NOT be your child’s regular teachers.
A minimum of five children must
be registered per day to run the winter
vacation camp. The fee is $50 per day.
Please look for the registration form in
your child’s mailbox. We cannot accept
registration forms after Dec. 11 due to staff
scheduling.
Please note that the JCC will be closing
at 1:00 p.m. on Dec. 24 and it will be
CLOSED for all programming on Dec. 25
and Jan. 1.
Preschool Book Fair
You’re invited! We look forward to seeing
you at our annual Scholastic Preschool
Book Fair which will be held Jan. 11–22
from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Early
Childhood wing of the JCC.
Fostering a love for reading early on
helps create lifelong learners. Reading
with your preschooler is one of the best
gifts that you can give your child. Reading
stimulates imagination and creativity,
and provides life lessons from your child’s
greatest teacher—you!
Our book fair is a case fair that includes
a bigger selection of books with a wide
variety of topics to choose from! This is the
perfect way to update your home library at
half the cost! Many of our parents love to
purchase books for their child’s classroom.
To make this easier for you, please look
for the specially marked book bins at the
check-out which contains the wish list of
books for classroom libraries. Your child
will be able to place a special sticker inside
the book that lets the teacher know who
purchased it for the classroom. Please note
that purchasing a book from the wish bin
is optional and not required. The Early
Childhood Development Program greatly
appreciates all wish bin books that are
purchased.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Communication between parents
and teachers is an important part of
our program. During the school year,
teachers are making observations and
completing assessments to guide learning
and instruction to promote success in all
areas of development. We look forward
to sharing it with you during the parentteacher
conferences that will be held Jan.
11–22. Please look for the sign-up sheet
outside the office and information on the
ECDP Office Hub on MemberHub. Parents
will be able to view their child’s portfolio
at the parent-teacher conference. A second
conference will be scheduled in May.
Purim Parade
The Early Childhood Development
Program will hold its annual Purim
Parade on March 24
at 9:45 a.m. in the
gymnasium. Parents
are invited to attend
and children may
wear their costumes
to school.
persons listed above, hereby affirm the following:
I am applying for membership with the Jewish Community
Center (JCC) of Syracuse. I agree to abide by its rules
and bylaws. I understand that all members 18 years and
older may participate in the JCC’s annual meeting.
commitment. If paying by monthly automatic payments
from a credit card, I authorize the JCC of Syracuse to
automatically charge my credit card account for each
consecutive month of the plan.
renewed each year unless I give notice in writing. Note
that the JCC of Syracuse reserves the right to cancel a
notice. I understand that membership is not transferable
and membership dues are non-refundable.
I have read and agree with these membership terms as
acknowledged by my signature below.
Services. “The diverse styles of music and
quality of the musicians were incredible,
and the turnout was excellent as usual. I
can’t wait to see what kind bands we get to
enter this year.”
Each JCC Battle of the Bands
competition has typically drawn up to ten
bands from all over Central New York. The
shows are filled with quality talent and
get the house rocking. Last year’s winner
MIND
AND
BODY
ALL
FITNESS
LEVELS
Neulander
Group
Exercise Classes
Barre
A combination of ballet techniques
with Pilates movements and
principles offers an energizing
workout that strengthens, stretches
and tones the body.
NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action)
NIA is a blend of concepts, cultures, theories and
movement from the east and west. It is a barefoot
technique offering a fusion of movement styles.
Experience the expressiveness of dance, the power of
martial arts and the wisdom of the healing arts.
Pilates
Based on the principles of Joseph Pilates, this class’
multiple levels of participation uses bands, magic
circles, stability balls and BOSUs. Mostly done on a
mat, but some standing work is incorporated as well.
Restorative Yoga
Hatha Yoga based exercises include gentle stretching,
breathing techniques and balance postures. The
Balance & Bone Density
This integrated balance training
and bone density building class is
designed to address fall reduction
and prevention as well as build
bone density and postural stability
through a variety of exercises and
weight-bearing routines. The class’ weight portion may
be done seated or standing. If you’re healthy although
somewhat deconditioned and just want to feel better
about your exercise regimen, then this class may be
right for you. Please bring water, a towel and wear
exercise shoes and clothing.
Cardio Conditioning
This high-energy class offers all the benefits of
a muscle sculpting class combined with different
cardio techniques such as steps, BOSU ball and
glides. Format will differ from class to class to offer
the best fat- and calorie-burning workout in town.
Cardio Kick
A combination of aerobics, boxing and martial arts,
this is one of the most popular fitness trends to hit
gyms in recent years. This intense total-body workout
can improve strength, aerobic fitness, flexibility,
coordination and balance.
Group Cycle
Designed by an Olympic mountain-biking coach,
the Keiser M3 Plus bike brings the mountain-biking
experience indoors to safely deliver a full-body workout.
Unlike other cycling classes which just work the legs,
this cutting-edge cycling class works the whole body.
H.I.T (High Intensity Training)
Forty-five minutes of high intensity training exercises
with weights, bands and cardio intervals thrown in to
help get your heart rate up in that cardio zone. All while
sculpting and toning your muscles!
Family Sports & Fitness Center
• All classes are free for fitness members
(except TRX suspension training).
• $10 per class for non-fitness members.
class focuses on strengthening of body and posture
alignment. The many benefits include relaxation and an
improved sense of well being. Come enjoy.
Tai Chi for Arthritis
Tai Chi is an ancient practice proven to improve
mental and physical well being. Tai Chi for Arthritis
uses gentle Sun-style Tai Chi movements to help
reduce stress, improve breathing and develop balance,
mobility and body awareness. All ability levels are
welcome and you don’t need to be diagnosed with
arthritis to participate.
Yoga
A hybrid style drawing from Vinyasa, Lyengar and
Viniyoga that brings physical benefits by integrating
body and mind performance. Bring a towel, water and
we recommend that you bring your own Yoga mat.
Yogalates
This class is a fusion of Yoga and Pilates. See each
description above for further details.
Hooping
Have fun while having a flashback to when you were a
kid! Enjoy a variety of hooping techniques to exercise
your arms, legs, abdomen and glutes. Hooping
improves flexibility, balance, motor skills, hand-eye
coordination and endurance. Plus, you’ll feel happy!
Muscle Sculpting
Instructors use barbells, free weights, bands and balls
to create the ultimate total body shaping class.
PILOXING ®
This fun and challenging class blends the power, speed
and agility of boxing with the beautiful sculpting and
flexibility of Pilates. The resulting unique mix of moves
provides a fat-torching, muscle-sculpting, core-centric
interval workout guaranteed to whip you into shape!
Using weighted gloves adds to the workout by toning
the arms and maximizing cardiovascular health.
Step & Sculpt
A dynamic blend of step and cardiovascular activities
along with intervals of strength movements help
increase muscle tone and the body’s metabolism. An
overall power packed workout!
TRX Suspension Training
Fee: $15 for fitness members, $25 non-members
TRX (Total Body Resistance Exercise) utilizes a band
(two-handled nylon strap) to harness the power of
gravity and movement for body weight exercises. The
result is a mix of support and mobility to train strength,
endurance, flexibility, coordination, balance, power and
core stability across a wide range of resistance.
Zumba
A fusion of Latin and international music provides the
backdrop for a blood pumping, effective cardiovascular
workout for all ages. A variety of fast and slow rhythms
help tone and sculpt the body while you learn easyto-follow
dance steps. Zumba Gold is the low-impact
version for all levels.
BASIC
Chair Class
Exercises designed for a chair for those individuals who
have difficulty getting down to the floor for mat work. Also
some standing work for balance training.
Exercise Chair
Working on a push-pull pulley system, the exercise chair
offers a total body workout while sitting. It is easy to use
and helps increase flexibility, balance, endurance and
strength. The chair can accommodate those with very
limited mobility to those who can get around and are
Celebrate, honor and remember
To commemorate special occasions —births, birthdays,
graduations, anniversaries, weddings, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or
to perpetuate the memory of a loved one—the JCC welcomes
tax-deductible gifts to one of our many endowments and
special funds. The JCC will send an acknowledgement
card to the individual (or next of kin) in whose name the
contribution was made. Some of our funds are listed below.
