Main purpose of the post<br />
The post is designed to provide:<br />
• Comprehensive training in academic gastroenterology including research methods.<br />
• The opportunity to complete clinical training in gastroenterology and general medicine to the<br />
completion of the CCST (50% of time will be spent in the clinical service and 50% in academic<br />
postdoctoral training)<br />
• The opportunity to assist in, and contribute to, the development and delivery of the<br />
undergraduate programme in medicine and gastroenterology and postgraduate programme in<br />
gastroenterology including the MSc in Gastroenterology.<br />
• A generic Monday afternoon training programme in academic medicine with clinical lecturers<br />
and academic clinical fellows in other areas of medicine, surgery and dentistry<br />
Main duties of the post<br />
Research<br />
The post provides opportunity for postdoctoral research in both clinical and laboratory aspects of<br />
Gastroenterology in collaboration with the candidate’s chosen supervisor and other investigators in<br />
the Centre of Gastroenterology.<br />
Teaching<br />
The post holder also plays a major role in the organisation and running of the teaching and<br />
assessment within the centre. This department teaches medicine to students from St Bartholomew’s<br />
& The Royal <strong>London</strong> School of Medicine & Dentistry.<br />
The post holder will also contribute to postgraduate teaching within the speciality of<br />
gastroenterology. (including the MSc in Gastroenterology).<br />
Clinical duties<br />
The post holder will act as an SpR in Gastroenterology for 50% of the time. The time between<br />
academic activities and clinical service will be divided into long blocks in association with a<br />
matched Clinical Lecturer.<br />
Clinical training<br />
Applications must have the MRCP (UK) or equivalent and have completed two higher specialist<br />
training (Calman years 1 & 2) or equivalent in gastroenterology, in addition to having submitted a<br />
doctorate. It is expected that the candidate will remain in this position until completion of CCST.<br />

Duration<br />
The position is until completion of CCT, with progress assessed by Professor Sanderson in<br />
association with the <strong>London</strong> <strong>Deanery</strong>. Continuation of employment will depend on satisfactory<br />
progress. Suggestions by the lecturer, once in post, for changes that will improve productivity will<br />
be sympathetically considered.
