The only standard tests at <strong>the</strong> present time are <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> private sector certifications <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong><br />
American <strong>Naturopathic</strong> Medical Certification and Accreditation Board described in <strong>the</strong> previous sec-<br />
tion. The ANMCAB does consider health care experience a prerequisite to certification.<br />
Matching Training to Scope <strong>of</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
Because states do not license naturopaths, <strong>the</strong>re is no defined legal scope <strong>of</strong> practice <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. Although<br />
some state associations have defined a pr<strong>of</strong>essional scope <strong>of</strong> practice <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir members, <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional scope <strong>of</strong> practice adopted at a national level <strong>for</strong> naturopaths. With nei<strong>the</strong>r legal scope <strong>of</strong><br />
practice nor a consensus document regarding pr<strong>of</strong>essional scope <strong>of</strong> practice, each school may adopt its<br />
own curriculum and degree criteria. Individuals may determine whe<strong>the</strong>r and when <strong>the</strong>y are sufficiently<br />
prepared to provide care.<br />
Integrated training<br />
Naturopaths only utilize modalities and <strong>the</strong>rapies that are non-allopathic in nature. Thus, education in<br />
this branch <strong>of</strong> naturopathy leans heavily toward training in holistic health practices and care. Many<br />
schools, however, <strong>of</strong>fer courses in <strong>the</strong> basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry,<br />
microbiology, and immunology.<br />
Continuing education and career options<br />
Individual practitioners may choose to enhance <strong>the</strong>ir curriculum or practice by participating in<br />
workshops or seminars. Some naturopaths seek additional training if <strong>the</strong>y wish to specialize in a<br />
particular <strong>the</strong>rapy such as homeopathy or acupuncture. Those who wish to teach in <strong>the</strong> field may<br />
choose to complete a doctoral program.<br />
<strong>Pr<strong>of</strong>ile</strong> <strong>of</strong> a Pr<strong>of</strong>ession: <strong>Naturopathic</strong> <strong>Practice</strong><br />
Naturopaths may follow several career avenues after completion <strong>of</strong> a diploma or certification<br />
program. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se routes include naturopathic or nutritional consulting, owning or<br />
managing natural health retail businesses, authoring or publishing books or magazine articles on<br />
various natural health topics, conducting seminars and workshops, appearing on radio or<br />
television programs focusing on holistic health, working with outreach groups in developing<br />
