It could be walking into a big job interview in an effort to steady your nerves, or maybe it was to curb growing frustration with an angry toddler? Either way, we often use breathing to help us keep our cool. Here are some facts on why lung health is essential to our overall wellbeing. 1. Our bodies expel 70 percent of its toxins through breathing. When you take shallow breaths, your body has to work harder to detoxify. 2. Deep breathing increases your energy level and improves blood circulation through oxygenation. 3. When you take a deep breath, endorphins are released into your body. Endorphins act like painkillers and can relieve headaches, sleeplessness, backaches and other stress related aches and pains… and make you happier. 4. A long, slow breath is the fastest way to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, a.k.a. the relaxation response. 5. Deep breathing increases your cardio capacity, similar to exercise, and can help burn fat cells. 6.
