what I know now…...
In our regular series, Craig Earnshaw, Senior Managing Director, Technology,
tells us the most valuable lessons he has learnt from his career …..and from life!
People work with people
- companies don’’’t work
with companies.
We can often vastly underestimate
the importance of the relationships
that we build, both with our
colleagues and our clients. I’m a
firm believer that it is vital to build
personal relationships, whether
over the phone, or preferably over a
glass of wine or a cup of coffee. If a
client likes you, and enjoys working
with you, you’ve got a much better
chance of being the person that
they call next time they need help.
Always ensure that you
understand the ‘why’
as well as the ‘what’
Typically we ask each other, and
our clients, “what” they need
us to do. However we can often
add so much more to the overall
situation if we also ask “why”
they need to do it. The additional
details are often very valuable.
As well as thinking
about the “cost”, also
think about the “value”.
Within the Technology practice
for example, it might only take 30
minutes of analysis to recover a
document that has been deleted
from a computer. However this
document, and the information
about when it was deleted, might
make or break a client’s case.
Always remember
to say “thank you”.
We may have all been reminded by
our parents when we were younger,
but it is all too easy to forget how
important it is to say thank you.
Whether it’s when your manager
gives you some feedback, when a
client calls with a new enquiry, or
when your staff complete a task
or come up with a new idea, it’s
often the little things that have
the biggest impact on people.
Life moves pretty fast.
If you don’’’t stop and
look around once in a
while, you could miss it.
This was first said by Ferris Bueller
thirty years ago, and he hit the nail
squarely on the head. As committed
as we all are to our clients, our work
and our careers, if we don’t take the
time to step back every once in a
while and experience something new
our lives will all be much poorer for it.
celebrate
welcome to the world…...
