THE FABRICATOR
Comment
Once again time to wish you all ahappy Christmas and aprosperous
new year –which, from what Iread, may well be on the cards.
This time last year I noted that the economy seemed to be
recovering. And it has not been abad 2015 at all. We have certainly
found things quite buoyant. As far as next year is concerned whilst
Palmer is not optimistic about the domestic sector his recent report
on construction predicts growth through to 2019 of as much as 20%.
Maybe you PVC fabricators should spend the break sharpening your
saws and ordering in the aluminium.
Next year we do have the FIT show tolook forward to. Once again
at Telford itwill be moving to the NEC from 2017. Personally Ihave
never liked the NEC.Itisexpensiveand, unless the FIT organisers have
done some stiff negotiating, that includes the very inconvenient car
parking arrangements. Even exhibitors can find themselves pushed out
into the far reaches of the north car park. Not ideal for someone
carrying heavy samples, boxes ofliterature orunwieldy displays.Whilst
in the beginning Telford was greeted with agreat deal of doubt Ihave
to say itwas pretty convenient parking for free right in front of the
exhibition hall. Perhaps the move signifies growth and is asign of
success: we shall see.
With document Qnow under our belts we have to wait to see what
new regulation might await us in the coming year. Iwas at the Roto
international press conference last month. Roto was, for the second
year, trying to get the press behind acampaign totackle, what is
apparently, arising tide of burglary inGermany. At dinner on the final
evening there was apanel discussion between Roto technical people
and trade press editors. Coming from the land of Secured by Design
PAS24and nowDocument Q, Iconfessed myself puzzled by the whole
thing. Iasked the person sitting next to me what it was all about. Sabine
Schneider is astaff journalist on Baumaster aGerman architectural
magazine. She told me that the German householder is highly focussed
on energy efficiency and not very concerned about security.
Irather think that the opposite is true here inthe UK.Triple glazing
has really not taken off, the government has dropped the idea of zero
carbon housing, following several years of cranking down Uvalues
approved document Lseems to have gone into remission and, happily,
the Green Deal has died adeath. On the other hand with Secured by
Design the police have involved themselves indomestic security –
something Roto would love to achieve –and building regulations are
incorporating PAS24, originallyadoor security standard, into windows
and everyone is falling over themselves to comply.
2
In association
with
On the other hand Irecently heard aninterview with an 'expert'
who reckoned that, because of climate change, wewould be doing
away with gas as an energy source in the future. When the interviewer
asked “What about domestic boilers?” there was no clear answer.
Look out for the regulations; no one can accuse the bureaucrats who
dream up this stuff of thinking things through. In The Island Race
Churchill wrote that after the Romans left, for hundreds of years the
British were 'cold and unwashed'.
Have ahappy Christmas –and here's to 2016.
More than a dozen PVC-U and
showing at The FIT Show when it
next year, the biggest gathering of such
With many of the industry’s
established stalwarts exhibiting there
are also one or two newer names
joining the throng and all are claiming
something new on offer, including
brand new systems. However, all are
keeping their big items under wraps for
the time being.
FIT Show managing director Paul
Godwin says: “This is the most
impressive gathering of such companies
for probably 10years.There has been a
significant rationalisation of the systems
companies since the ‘80s and ‘90s but
the dozen plus systems companies
exhibiting at next year’s FIT Show isthe
“That these companies are investing
millions of pounds in design,
development, new machinery and
tooling at this time is great news for all
of us. It shows great faith in the futureof
the industry.
“Many of these companies are
showing brand new systems so
NEWS
Fire alarm inUK Apeeringly so!
The new chairman of the UK’s largest
fire door certification scheme has
sounded a stark warning about fire
safety in UK buildings.
David Oldfield, head of joinery at
Arnold Laver, has been voted as
chairman of the BWF-Certifire Scheme.
He replaces David Paxton, technical
director at Premdor.
David Oldfield said that safety had
seen major breakthroughs in the last few
years thanks to the overall improvement
and simplification of third-party
certification of fire doors and the work
of the Fire Door Inspection Scheme
(FDIS). However, he was very worried
still about a culture of complacency
among those responsible for specifying,
installing and maintaining passive fire
protection measures such as fire doors.
In particular, he pointed to recent
research by FDIS which discovered that
61% of fire doors inspected had
problems with fire orsmoke seals, and
fines for breaches of the Regulatory
Reform (Fire Safety) Order which
included fire door failures had reached
almost £1m this year.The ’75 facts about
fire’ produced by the BWF-Certifire
Scheme for this year’s Fire Door Safety
Week also showed adossier of safety
failures across the country.
David Oldfield says: “The scale of the
problem is huge and appears to affect
every sector and every type of building
we use, work and live in.The state of the
nation’s fire doors is a borderline
6
David Oldfield
national crisis.
“The fire door industry and its close
partners across construction and fire
safety services need to continue to
work together to ensure critical
messages about fire door safety reach
our customers, but also echo in the
corridors of power –change needs to
be driven from the top.
“The message is simple: ensure the
right product is specified and installed
correctly, and that means athird-party
certificated product. Anything less is
frankly an unnecessary and
unacceptable risk.” ❐
Criminals are
telephoning
FENSA
registered
installers
claiming to be
from FENSA, and
asking for their
bank card details.
They are
claiming that this information is required so that FENSA can
refund installers monies that it owes them. They tell installers that
FENSA has sent out aletter about refunds and that they are
following up on this letter.
AFENSA spokesman says that the organisation will never contact
installers asking for their bank account or card information –and is
not in the process of refunding monies to any registered
businesses. FENSA has not sent out any letters about refunds.
He continues: "If an installation company has been telephoned in
this way they should contact the police by dialling 101 and give this
crime number: NFRC151101236514. They should also report itto
FENSA." ❐
Everybody loves the new Lumi
window system from Apeer –this
was the overwhelming message the
exhibition team received during the
Grand Designs exhibition in
Birmingham at the beginning of
October.
“Even before the show opened we
had the other exhibitors asking what
we are all about,” says marketing
manager Linda Tomb.“Apparently, even
during the build our guys were
constantly being asked about our
windows.
“The show was almost too busy for
our liking –wedidn’t stop until Sunday
afternoon. It was very enjoyable and the
product has had a terrific second
launch.”
Many visitors also showed keen
interest in the black door, which was
also displayed onthe stand, with many
saying that they would upgrade their
front doors first, then return to the
windows later. The bifold was also well
received as a separate product for
renovations.
Tomb says: “The show felt much
busier than last year, and people loved
Lumi. Lots of people came on to the
stand in the morning, walked round, and
came back later for asecond and third
look in the afternoon.
“We are now swamped with quotes
and leads, with projects coming from
across the UK –fromTruroinCornwall,
to the north of Scotland, with many
double-rebated composite door –Meridian. Haydon Statham, sales director, reports on the
marketplace reaction to their ‘game-changing’ product and how itwill help to grow sales
for their customers
Looking back on 2015 –and it’s fair to
Lsay myview will probably beshared
by manyothers–itwas astrange year, full
of ups and downs and unpredictability.
When we thought we’d be quiet, we were
busy – and then the opposite would
happen.
That said, business was still up on the
previous 12 months due to buoyant
sales across our entire composite door
range and an influx of new customers
towards the end of the year.
Panels still relevant
PVC door panels are holding steady
thanks to their loyal following. Panels still
have their place and while the demand
exists for this long-established product,
we will continue to offer it as part ofour
comprehensive portfolio for the retail
replacement entrance door market.
Punctuating the spasmodic trading
conditions of the last 12 months was the
launch of our high-performance Meridian
door, which has been very well-received
by our customers. Its presence in
showrooms nationally is really starting to build
momentum now and we’re expecting sales of this 70mm
“We’re already
manufacturing
up to five
Meridians a
day, and this
figure is
growing”
premium composite door to
increase steadily in 2016.
So what makes it so special?
Offering the highest specifications
in security and A-rated thermalefficiency,
the Meridian door has
a double-rebate with triple
weatherseals and 50mm tripleglazing
that delivers outstanding
weather, energy and acoustic
performance. It is manufactured
to achieve Secured by Design as
standard and is fitted with a
superior secure multi-locking
system.
Thermally efficient
It’s innovative too, having auvalue
as low as 1.0. To further
underpin the Meridian door’s
credentials as a truly industryleading
product, tests have shown
it is 19% more thermally-efficient
than a 48mm solid timber core
composite door and 17% more
thermally-efficient than a44mm
traditional timber panelled door. These sustainable and
proven credentials are backed up by extensive tests and
add to the product’s overall appeal to discerning
consumers atwhom this product is aimed.
Tree sponsors
Meridian takes its name from the Meridian Wood that
backs onto our composite door manufacturing facility at
Bluntisham in Cambridgeshire. As supporters of the
Woodland Trust we sponsor atree-planting scheme at the
site, demonstrating our environmental commitment to
preserve and protect it for future generations to enjoy.
Yes, it’s amore expensive niche product, but wehave
been pleasantly surprised at the response. This niche is
much bigger than we thought! We’re already
manufacturing up to five Meridians aday, and this figure
is growing.
As the economy continues to strengthen, property
owners are feeling more confident and with more money
in their pockets, they are prepared to splash out on
improving their homes. That includes composite doors,
which offer the all-important elements of aesthetics,
security and thermal efficiency that enhance and protect
the home. ❐
PVC-U: Eco-kay! Renolit Exfol app
Joand Andy Thompson were resigned
to being lifelong renters. When the
opportunity to build their own house in
South Lincolnshire arose they were
determined to make it an eco house
with no utility bills.
To do this they briefed architect Dr
Jerry Harrall a multi award winning
designer of eco-friendly developments.
Achartered architect, developer and
independent researcher, he has
accumulated 14 years of first-hand
experience designing, building, living,
working in and monitoring naturally
heated, naturally ventilated buildings. He
has now designed 14 buildings that hold
UK’s highest energy performance
certificates, as well as the seven lowest
air pressure tests on record.
“Our main objective was to build an
eco-friendly home with no utility bills –
exactly as we had been living in
previously,” says Andy Thompson. “The
weakest area of ahouse is traditionally
the windows, as this is where most of
the heat is lost. Most standard house
builders will usually get U-values of
around 1.7W/m 2 K–our aim was to get
below 1.0W/m 2 K.
“We did look at timber as an option,
but we had seen it used in other
developments where ithad warped and
had problems with the seals. So, aswe
wanted alarge opening, we didn’t want
to risk it.
14
Jo and Andy Thompson
“Aluminum was just too expensive
and not at all energy efficient. So really,
we were set on having PVC-U.Wefound
alocal Liniar installer, Bob Mills, who
could help us achieve our objectives.”
The windows comprised Liniar
EnergyPlus six-chamber profile, plastic
composite spacer bar,triple glazing and
low emissivity film on the inside and
outside to achieve a U-value of
0.8W/m 2 K. By using this combination,
the heat loss from the house was
reduced by 50%. To further increase
thermal efficiency the windows were
installed on alayer of external insulation
as opposed to the usual cavity. ❐
Growth for investment
Following a record year in
which Dempsey Dyer is
due to break £9m turnover for
the first time in its 38 year
machinery.
The investment includes
new corner cleaners from
Managing director Peter
Dyer says: “Our financial year
divisions forecast to deliver
record sales of over £6.5m and
£3m respectively. Wewant to
and continue this growth
throughout 2016, so have decided to make investments
right the way across the business. The new machinery is
just the first of manyimprovements we plan to implement
over the coming months.”
In 2016, Dempsey Dyer will be
implementing a controlled
expansion of its 64,000sq ft
facility, enabling an increase
productivity and satisfy the
record order book.
Dyer says: “We’ve already
introduced a split shift in the
timber factory and there are
plans afoot to further increase
the manufacturing output. Next
year will also see the launch of
new products, ensuring we
“It was Karen that suggested we extend
companies within our target area that
were stocking the same systems as us.
We wanted to differentiate ourselves
and widen our audience in the process.
“Over time,we'd become disillusioned
with our previous supplier. The support promised in their promotional materials never seemed to
materialise; when systems changed, no training was provided and if issues arose as aresult, they did
everything possible to distance themselves.
“I have acontact at Glazerite –which now fabricates our windows –who invited us to view someVeka
Managing director, Willie Kerr says:
“The new furniture was acollaborative
of the UK’s leading hardware
manufacturers and has significantly
raised the bar in terms of aesthetics,
you find on a timber window and it
doesn’t quite meet the necessary
requirements. Our new furniture onthe
Chigwell Window Centre has
industry.
Sunny Singh –one of the
founders says: “We were inthe
other suppliers suggested the Supercut so we got incontact with
Wegoma.
“The Wegoma guys were fantastic. They spent two weeks on site
during the installation, which only took four weeks in total. It was a
very smooth process and led to an easy transition from our
Building upon the market-leading
success of the Skypod range of
skylights, Eurocell has announced its
latest model – the SkypodSQ. This
square skylight presents perfectly
balanced sight lines and,due to its simple
but ingenious four-hip design, lets in
more natural light than conventional
designs of equivalent surface area.
Designed with the installer in mind,
SkypodSQ can be fitted quickly and
accurately because there are no mitring
or awkward angles to cut – just
assemble and screw into place using the
pre-drilled screw holes.
Skypod’s success in the market is due
in no small part toits good looks and
aesthetics especially when compared to
other PVC-U systems. Plus, it offers
better value for money than aluminium
alternatives. Its contemporary design
means that Skypod is the most effective
means of boosting headroom and
volume, while welcoming extra natural
light into otherwise drab flat-roofed
rooms.
As with all Skypod products,
SkypodSQ is available in the full colour
range of anthracite grey,moondust grey,
golden oak, rosewood and white –with
awhite interior finish as standard. A
further 30 colour options can be made
ALUMINIUM –CAB’S YEAR
Future retrospect
CAB chief executive, Justin Ratcliffe,
looks back over the association’s 21st
anniversary year
In our 21st anniversary year we have celebrated our
busiest ever 12 month period. During this time our
sector has continued to grow, with the latest Construction
Products Association figures forecasting arate of3.6% for
2015 and 3.8% in 2016. Our own CAB State of the
Market Survey for Q3, 2015 shows 75% of respondents,
on balance, are anticipating sales will rise over the next
year and virtually every CAB member respondent is
anticipating greater capital expenditure across arange of
metrics year-on-year. Encouragingly, 37% of members
stated that there were no constraints on activity over the
next 12 months.
Increasing UK profile
The CAB board is constantly challenging the staff team
to add value for membership and appeal to the widest
possible audience within the association. Our industry
leadership remains imperative and is highlighted by an
expanding annual technical conference and a leading
contractual awareness programme. Whilst we have a
significant role to playinrepresenting membersinEurope,
we also have to increase our profile in the UK and
highlight the benefits of our 21st century material to
current and future specifiers and users. We were delighted
to join with FAECF to organise a jointly branded
programme entitled Facades Evolution at the inaugural
Vision exhibition at Olympia in June.
We have been particularly encouraged by the influx this
year of awide range of new members, from start-ups to
major international brands from across the aluminium in
building supply chain. Many have been attracted by our
extensive and well supported events programme that has
again seen leading architects and specifiers present at an
Abusy CAB Pavilion at Ecobuild 2015
18
CAB CEO Justin Ratcliffe addresses the 2015
technical conference
interesting variety of venues in Birmingham,
Huddersfield, Liverpool, London and Loughborough. In
addition we created a 115m 2 CAB Pavilion stand at
Ecobuild 2015 in partnership with organisers UBM,
which was supported by five member company stands.
In 2016, we plan to have at least seven member
companies involved on the Pavilion which is only available
to CAB members. It will also be promoted as part ofthe
global show marketing programme, therefore maximising
exposure. In 2015 Ecobuild attracted 40,594 visitors of
whom 4,267 defined building completion as their main
interest with the figures for windows and doors at2,735
and cladding systems at 2,628. In addition, 96% of the top
25 UK architectural practices attended the show and also
84% of the top 25 contractors and housebuilders.
Our 2015 programme which included our annual
technical conference and new marketing mini-conferences
aimed to provide outstanding learning opportunities,
which over the last 18 months or so we have recorded on
vox pop videos and uploaded to ourYouTube channel.
Our 21st anniversary was atime to reflect but also one
to look into the future and the need to educate the next
generation of customers about our material and sector. To
this end, we became involved in the Your Green Future
construction. We have encouraged other young people in
our sector by sponsoring the tectonics prizes for students
Demand for training
We are certainly aware of member companies increasing
their staff numbers to meet rising demand. As an
association we see this leading to an increase in demand
for training which will include areas such as health and
safety and also contractual awareness. A number of
specialist contractors have also recently reported skills
shortages as being the worst for 14 years.
Our CAB contractual awareness seminars (ongoing in
2016) have been well attended by fabricators across the
UK. Presented by Geraldine Fleming, executive director,
sustainable benefits of aluminium to school
children at aYour Green Future event at Bristol
Knowles, the seminars have been able to resolve anumber
of member queries and also suggest new and improved
internal processes for companies to be better prepared in
the future. Members have used the opportunity to bring
the pre and post contract team together to highlight best
practice and share concerns with an expert from aglobal
leader in construction disputes.
In 2016, it is planned to host 5-7 seminars in the
Midlands and North, considering areas such as 10 top
contractual nightmares, checking contracts, pre and post
contract awareness and JCT contracts. Inaddition, it is
planned to host at least a couple of health and safety
ALUMINIUM –THE
COLUMN
Civil war security
Ispent some of my formative years growing up in a
characterful Cotswold cottage that featured several
architectural quirks. We won’t go into the single glazed
windows that regularly iced-up on the inside in winter, nor
the downstairs loo come to that, but I remember the
imposing front door well. It was what Ican best describe
as a solid oak bi-fold featuring cast iron studwork.
Although the cottage was small, for some reason the front
door opening was larger than normal and the door,
reputed to date from the 17th century, could be opened
halfway to afew feet wide before opening fully. The story
goes that the door dated from the time of the English civil
war when you had to be abit careful about who you let in
when they came knocking. The story was further
embellished on the basis that anearby road was called
Gunhouse Lane and said by some local wags to be the
location of one of Cromwell’s armouries. Perhaps this was
all the fanciful work of acreative estate agent, but an
interesting tale nevertheless.
To pass the PAS24...
Iwondered to myself recently how that front door would
perform in aPAS 24 test. One thing is for sure, it would
perform much better than the back door of the cottage,
which was areal case of sublime to ridiculous. Presumably
dating from the 1970s, the back door was woefully
inadequate in the security department, and while the large
clear glazed panel provided valuable daylight for the galley
kitchen beyond, it did make manipulating the lock
thumbturn through the letter box much easier. While this
saved us from being locked out on afew occasions with the
judicious use of abent bucket handle, it was no joke that
we were burgled this very same way. Fortunately we didn’t
have much worth stealing and no one was at home at the
time, but it was an unpleasant experience.
Property crime decline
It is ironic that apparently we did not think of security in
the 1970s as much as our forefathers did in the 1670s, but
Iguess it comes down to the level of threat. The most
recent crime statistics for 2014 to 2015 from the Crime
Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) show marked
reductions in property crime since peak levels in the
1990s. The CSEW indicates that, while there have been
long-term declines across most types of property crime,
the falls have been pronounced in vehicle-related theft,
domestic burglary and criminal damage. There are many
theories as to why property crime has fallen but there is
some evidence that improved household security is a
factor, with increases in the use of window locks and dead
locks, for example. It is to be hoped that the introduction
of Part Q1 for new dwellings can be shown to contribute
further to this trend. With CAB members, we have put
Asmooth
coating
Saint-Gobain Glass has introduced
SGG Cool-Lite SKN 176 a high
specification solar control coating
which can be combined with additional
safety and acoustic performance when
laminated with its existing SGG Stadip
range.
SGG Cool-Lite SKN 176 is the result
of Saint-Gobain Glass’ continuing
development of new and innovative
coatings to help meet the ever
increasing demands of the commercial
market, in this case by bringing together
many different performance benefits in
asingle product combination.
“Architects and specifiers are already
familiar with the advanced properties of
the SGG Cool-Lite and SGG Stadip
ranges,” saysAdrian Adams, commercial
market manager at Saint-Gobain Glass.
“This new combination opens up a
whole range of possible additional
applications by giving designers and
architects the ability of bringing
together high performance solar
control, safety and acoustic features in a
single product.”
The reduction in solar heat gain helps
to minimise the need for air
conditioning, helping to reduce building
energyloads and CO2 emissions,as well
as limiting the need for secondary solar
barriers such as louvers or blinds. ❐
GLASS &GLAZING
Aglassman’s Christmas
Little did Clifford Rankin of Rankin Glass know what he had started when he invited some
of his fellow Glassmen from the London area to aChristmas lunch in 1971 at Champagne
Charlies in Essex Road, London
December is ‘glassman’s’ month. For many people in
the trade the first Friday kicks-off Christmas. There
maybeother lunches and celebrations butthe Glassman’s
Christmas Luncheon is the first and afixed point in the
calendar.
Initially there were about a dozen guests and this
continued for a number of years with these sort of
numbers from the London glass businesses, with each
attendee being given a numbered certificate of
‘membership’. Among the early guest were George
Turner, Graham Greenberg, Gerry Hill from Pilkington,
Dave Davis from James Clark and Eaton, Phil Burke from
Hayes Glass, Fred Deanus from Allglass, Dave Mackay
from Dockrells, Ken Forbes of Nicholls &Clarke and
Terry Driscoll from T&WIde and in those early days
Pilkington’s usually picked up the bill.
Anational event
In 1985 glassmen started to come from all parts of the
UK and numbers increased considerably so in the early
90’s the regular Glassman’s Christmas lunch moved to
Colonel Jaspers atCity Rd, London. and as the numbers
got larger (and probably because Davy’sWine Bars sold
Colonel Jaspers itmoved to Bangers at Wilson Street
Moorgate in about 2005. Terry Driscol thinks he
remembers the new venue being ‘tried’ somewhere in
2004.
The WIGS join the glassmen
Stephanie Bennett organised this Glassmens’ lunch
superbly on behalf of Rankin’s, until they ceased trading
when Paul Rogers of Express Glazing Contractors,
suggested to Kevin Hulin of Mann McGowan that his
company might like to continue to keep it running in the
same spirit as Clifford had, and so with the support of
Paul Rankin, all the attendees/venue information was
saved and passed to Debbie Knight of Mann McGowan
who has continued to organise this annual event again
superbly,since 2012.
Alongside the Glassman’s lunch Stephanie Bennet
started an alternative lunch for women in glass. Inthe
early days the WIGS would join the men for apre-lunch
drink before leaving for another venue. Once the event
moved toBangers the venue was able to accomodate the
WIGS in aseparate dining room. The situation seemed
just plain daft and nowadays we all lunch together.
Anew boy
“I attended my first Glassmans’ in 1990 so Istill feel like
anew boy” says Kevin Hulin. “Clifford was always very
kind to me and it was always great talking all things sport
with Terry Driscoll. The Saturday mornings after some of
these events are probably best forgotten, particularly as I
once boarded the wrong train atWaterloo after one such
event and did not get home until breakfast time the next
26
Above is the certificate that hangs on my wall in
the editorial office. Soon after Istarted working
in this business Cliff Rankin invited me out to
lunch at Champagne Charlies. It was aconvivial
affair –asalwayswith Cliff.A few days later, tomy
astonishment, the above certificate arrived. In my
career as ajournalist Ihave been taken out to
lunch countless times. Only once has alunch
been ‘certified’. Clifford Rankin’s style; absolutely!
Idon’t remember when Ireceived my first
invitation to the Glassman’s lunch, from Cliff. It
was not an event that you could apply toattend
and Idorecall that it felt something like aroyal
command
day. It has been apleasure to have taken over the baton
from Clifford and Stephanie.”
Still going strong
This is the 44th year since that inaugural gathering and
many things have changed. Sadly one of them being that
Pilkington no longer picks up the tab.
ManyIamsure will have abiding memories of this great
event, and we would welcome any contribution from
anyonewho can send in stories, anecdotes or photographs
of past gatherings. Itwould also be great ifanyone of the
early pioneers still have copies of their numbered
certificates.(If they haven’talreadysold them on EBay.) ❐
WINDOW HARDWARE
World class in Hungary
“Always bigger, always more modern, always better and always more efficient,”
is how plant general manager Ernö Kocsis (pictured right) described the near
20-year history ofRoto’s plant in Lövö,Hungary
The Lövö factory isthe Roto
group’s largest production
facility worldwide. Of the
140,000m 2 site the
manufacturing and storage
area,occupies 28,300m 2 with the
administration area and the new
showroom occupying an
additional 1,400m 2. .
The Lövö factory
manufactures tilt-and-turn,
turn-only and tilt-only window
hardware as well as special
opening types, such as tilt-andslide.
Roof window gear is also
produced in Lövö.
Continuous investment
Ernö Kocsis says that
continual investment at Lövö has
seen expansion and
modernisation in both buildings
and plant and equipment.
In 2007, an assembly hall was
added, in 2008 araw materials
store, in 2012 a press
department and in 2013 a
finished goods store with five
racks all equipped with advanced
production and logistics
technologies.
Tool making
An important part of the
operation is tool production and
maintenance. Around 50 staff
are responsible for the
production of new tools and
replacement parts as well as
repair and maintenance of
around 4,000 punching tools.
The in-house product design
department, with 15 employees,
works in close cooperation with
the design department at
headquarters. The department
makes tools for the whole Roto
group and there is an intention
to supply to outside companies
as well.
The machines at Lövö are
maintained on apredictive, total
maintenance system. This largly
28
Roto consolidated production group’s largest
production location. 140,000m 2 in Lövö,
Hungary
One of two punching halls in Lövö: these
house atotal of 16 fully automated presses
and six reworking presses
Around 4,000 different hardware items run
off the Roto production lines in Lövö. aAbout
50 million products every year
obviates breakdowns with
machines being taken out of
production for servicing
according to aschedule.
World class
The plant operates on aworldclass
manufacturing principle.
Problems are discussed at
regular meetings and progress of
solutions is charted.
In the production department
16 fully automated presses and
six reworking presses with atotal
compressive force of 67,000 kN
are housed in two halls.Between
them they machine 15,000
tonnes of steel and produce
about 120 million punched parts
a year. Electroplating is
outsourced to Sopron which
carries out surface treatments
with ‘Roto Sil’ and zinc nickel
coatings.
Assembly
From the semi-finished
product store intralogistics
maintain the Kanban system
which supplies the assembly
stations.
In assembly there are three
high volume, small volume and
concealed hardware production
lines. Roto uses fully- and semiautomatic
machines at single
workstations and assembly
islands to manufacture about
4,000 different hardware
versions.Overall this amounts to
around 50 million pieces every
year.
Despatch and delivery key
The plant does not
manufacture for stock. The
ambition is to deliver its output.
“This,” says Kocsis, “is vital for
customer stisfaction.”
With a capacity to handle
7,000 pallets the plant sends out
1,200 truck loads every year. ❐
founded in 1974. In its early years the main activities
concentrated on lobbying government, research and cooperation
with the public sector. The NHIC Educational
Trust was formed in 1980 to complement the activities of
the NHIC and to further the education of the general
public in restoring and maintaining homes as a
contribution to improving the nation’s housing stock.
The trust has set up various national campaigns which
made a positive contribution to the improvement of
homes and encouraged the installation of basic amenities
in the then run down housing stock.
Today, the council is more consumer facing and
strongly advocates home modernisation by competent
practitioners with a particular emphasis on energy
efficiency in homes and the reduction of carbon
emissions.
The 2015 awards sponsors were:
❐ The Glass & Glazing Federation; Best Home
Improvement Glazing Project
The Winner in this category was IQ Glass with a
project which involved a home that had an awkward
kitchen layout with aleanto
type conservatory
which was used for
storage. In order to meet
the brief, toopen up the
whole space and let more
light in, internal walls were
removed to produce a
single uncluttered space.
A frameless glass roof with a frameless glass vertical
window and bi-fold door resulted in adramatic increase
in light and levels and accessibility. The renovation
project has created abetter connection with the rest of the
property which, in the view of the judges illustrates what
can be achieved in aconfined urban setting.
The runner-up was SEH BAC with a project
involving a 1950’s, four
bedroom family home which has
been transformed with the
addition of a highly evolved,
glazed extension. It provides
both easy family living and more
sophisticated ‘grown up’s’
spaces.
❐ Quality Assured National Warranties;
Improvements with Community Benefit
The winner was SEH BAC. An established home
improver, SEH BAC, has over 40 years’ experience in
transforming homes. Inthe judges view it’s embracing
change whilst delivering exemplar service initiative
demonstrates a determined
approach to providing aservice to
allow customers, throughout East
Anglia, London and the Home
Counties thatexceeds expectations.
The runner-up, Shermin Finance, was established
in 1976. Shermin Finance has more than 30 years
experience in home improvement finance. Its mission
statement says ‘We share your
aspirations, understand your
objectives, and are prepared to
travelthatextra mile to create the
best finance solution for your
business. We have a product
portfolio that takes full
advantage of the opportunities
that exist for the many home
improvement retailers that enjoy our support. The
cornerstone of our service excellence is the combination
of market leading experience with the embracing of
information technology.’
❐ Schüco UK; Aluminium Systems for Windows,
Doors and Facades
The winner,Crystal Glazing Solutions,worked on a
house which overlooks RutlandWater and wascompletely
refurbished last year. The client wanted slim sightlines to
maximise transparency and
daylight and aparticular type and
design of ironmongery which
necessitated a bespoke solution.
Careful consideration had to be
given tothe choice of colour and
because of the location special
attention had to be given toweatherproofing. The judges
considered that the choice of windows, doors, sliding
doors and rooflights complemented the traditional stone
façade and slate roof.
The runner-up, The Bi-Fold Door Factory. This
project involved afive bedroom Victorian home that was
purchased by a residential
developer in a very dilapidated
condition. The building was
virtually gutted and completely remodelled.
The entire ground floor
was opened up and extended on
twosides. Because of the height of
the openings on the ground floor, bi-folding doors were
the only viable solution. In this way significant amounts
of height, airy and usable space has been added thanks to
the extensive use of Schüco aluminium window systems
including curtain walling. ❐
Hueck has reported an increase in
demand from the high-end market.
The trend is highlighted by anumber of
recent projects supplied by the
company, incorporating the Hueck
Volato Mprofile system for sliding and
lifting-sliding windows and doors.
As aproject solution, Volato Mcan
meet the same stringent specifications
expected from curtain walls, in
accordance with the Centre for
Window and Cladding Technology’s
standard for systemised building
envelopes.
Hueck’s Volato M door has
successfully passed the 600 Pascals
water penetration test pressureat2001
to 2400 Pascals wind pressure, while
installed in an aluminium façade.These
standards correspond to the CWCT
methodology.
Volato’s ability to achieve these
excellent weather performances has
seen it specified in anumber of London
residential and mixed-use
developments. Facilities management
and construction services provider,
Carillion, was first to specify the high
performance door system initially for
Sealco has
achieved
accreditation
across three
major ISO
standards in
safety and
environmental
practice.
The standards
achieved are ISO
9001 in Quality Management, ISO 14001 in Environmental
Management and ISO 18001 in Occupational Health and Safety.
Alan Malcolm, sales director at Sealco, says:“We have always
delivered an exceptional class of service, but securing the ISO
accreditations means we have solid, independent proof of that.
“That gives customers peace of mind when choosing Sealco.
Amongst other things, we can show that our delivery systems are
dependable and fully health and safety compliant, our product
sourcing has minimal environmental impact, and that you’ll always
get the same high standards when dealing with Sealco.
“The quality of the supply chain is often akey factor for
manufacturers looking to secure local authority or other public
sector contracts. We’ve done all of the work, so we can provide
customers with the documents they need. Sealco adds that
working with ISO-accredited suppliers makes things easier for
customers.” ❐
Roseview Windows has released a
new brochure aimed at helping its
trade customers break into the heritage
and conservation market.
The brochure illustrates the
fabricator’s GAward-winning Ultimate
Rose, timber-alternative PVC-U sash
window accepted for use in numerous
conservation areas. Incorporating runthrough
sash horns and timber-style
mechanical joints on the frame and sash,
the Ultimate Rose has been used in
historical buildings all around the
country – including Parkwood Hall
School in Kent, Brighton General
Hospital and Ross on Wye’s Castle
Lodge hotel.
“Most people find it hard totell the
difference between Ultimate Rose and
traditional timber,” claims Roseview
managing director, Willie Kerr. “The
woodgrain finishes, slim-sightlines and
putty-effect glass lines all combine to
form an authentic-looking PVC-U sash.
“Our new brochure has been
specifically designed to help our trade
customers capitalise on growing
opportunities within the heritage
sector,” he says.
“As old-style timber windows in
conservation areas degrade, and
property owners seek replacements,
there’s a lot of business available for
installers offering the right product.
Rose Collection windows aren’t just for
older properties, though – they’re an
ideal fit for affluent customers looking
for aluxurious, vintage aesthetic.” ❐
