PVC-U: Eco-kay! Renolit Exfol app<br />
Joand Andy Thompson were resigned<br />
to being lifelong renters. When the<br />
opportunity to build their own house in<br />
South Lincolnshire arose they were<br />
determined to make it an eco house<br />
with no utility bills.<br />
To do this they briefed architect Dr<br />
Jerry Harrall a multi award winning<br />
designer of eco-friendly developments.<br />
Achartered architect, developer and<br />
independent researcher, he has<br />
accumulated 14 years of first-hand<br />
experience designing, building, living,<br />
working in and monitoring naturally<br />
heated, naturally ventilated buildings. He<br />
has now designed 14 buildings that hold<br />
UK’s highest energy performance<br />
certificates, as well as the seven lowest<br />
air pressure tests on record.<br />
“Our main objective was to build an<br />
eco-friendly home with no utility bills –<br />
exactly as we had been living in<br />
previously,” says Andy Thompson. “The<br />
weakest area of ahouse is traditionally<br />
the windows, as this is where most of<br />
the heat is lost. Most standard house<br />
builders will usually get U-values of<br />
around 1.7W/m 2 K–our aim was to get<br />
below 1.0W/m 2 K.<br />
“We did look at timber as an option,<br />
but we had seen it used in other<br />
developments where ithad warped and<br />
had problems with the seals. So, aswe<br />
wanted alarge opening, we didn’t want<br />
to risk it.<br />

“Aluminum was just too expensive<br />
and not at all energy efficient. So really,<br />
we were set on having PVC-U.Wefound<br />
alocal Liniar installer, Bob Mills, who<br />
could help us achieve our objectives.”<br />
The windows comprised Liniar<br />
EnergyPlus six-chamber profile, plastic<br />
composite spacer bar,triple glazing and<br />
low emissivity film on the inside and<br />
outside to achieve a U-value of<br />
0.8W/m 2 K. By using this combination,<br />
the heat loss from the house was<br />
reduced by 50%. To further increase<br />
thermal efficiency the windows were<br />
installed on alayer of external insulation<br />
as opposed to the usual cavity. ❐<br />

British and European record with<br />
their Flyball team 'WOW<br />
Wonderdogs'.<br />
Flyball is afast-paced dog sport<br />
that sees the animals race over a<br />
number of hurdles, to reach a<br />
spring-loaded box which releases a<br />
tennis ball that must be brought<br />
back to the start.Teams of four<br />
dogs race against each other in arelay format and the first team to<br />
have all dogs cross the finish line,without error, wins the heat.<br />
The family-based team were thrilled to recently break the current<br />
European record with an incredibly fast time of 15.74 seconds.<br />
Gray says:“Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Our<br />
team has been getting better and better over the years and weare<br />
delighted to have become the British and European record<br />
holders. “There have been afew 'firsts' for Wonderdogs this year:<br />
in August, we ran in the first British race that ended with both<br />
teams finishing with sub-16 second times.” ❐<br />

and woodgrains.<br />
It claims that with the Renolit Exfol<br />
app i8t it is simple for the user to<br />
configure a window by combining<br />
different window options with any<br />
colour or woodgrain design.This enables<br />
the user to visualise their specific<br />
window projects.<br />
Available in English and German the<br />
app includes an animated quick start<br />
guide, and 'forward' and 'backwards'<br />
buttons to makeusing the configuration<br />
tool straightforward.<br />
To use the app, select the required<br />
range tab (metallics, woodgrains, or<br />
colours) and spin the wheel of samples<br />
until the desired swatch extends out.<br />
Then drag and drop it on to the window<br />
profile section. Youcan further select<br />
the windowstyle,rotate between inside<br />
or outside perspective, and change the<br />
wall colour. Saveyour windowdesign to<br />
favourites, compare different<br />
configurations, then email acopy orlink<br />
to sample ordering (requires wi-fi<br />
connection).<br />
