NHIC AWARDS 2015 The windows winners The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) runs ahighly respected annnual awards scheme which culminates in apresentation lunch in the Gladstone Library, London. Important categories for these awards are sponsored by NHIC members. Reinforcing NHIC’s emphasis on climate change and carbon reduction, this year’s awards were presented by Lord Bourne of Aberystwyth, parliamentary under secretary ofstate for the Department of the Environment and Climate Change The National Home Improvement Council was founded in 1974. In its early years the main activities concentrated on lobbying government, research and cooperation with the public sector.The NHIC Educational Trust was formed in 1980 to complement the activities of the NHIC and to further the education of the general public in restoring and maintaining homes as a contribution to improving the nation’s housing stock. The trust has set up various national campaigns which made a positive contribution to the improvement of homes and encouraged the installation of basic amenities in the then run down housing stock. Today, the council is more consumer facing and strongly advocates home modernisation by competent practitioners with a particular emphasis on energy efficiency in homes and the reduction of carbon emissions. The 2015 awards sponsors were: ❐ The Glass & Glazing Federation; Best Home Improvement Glazing Project The Winner in this category was IQ Glass with a project which involved a home that had an awkward kitchen layout with aleanto type conservatory which was used for storage. In order to meet the brief, toopen up the whole space and let more light in, internal walls were removed to produce a single uncluttered space. A frameless glass roof with a frameless glass vertical window and bi-fold door resulted in adramatic increase in light and levels and accessibility. The renovation project has created abetter connection with the rest of the property which, in the view of the judges illustrates what can be achieved in aconfined urban setting. The runner-up was SEH BAC with a project involving a 1950’s, four bedroom family home which has been transformed with the addition of a highly evolved, glazed extension. It provides both easy family living and more sophisticated ‘grown up’s’ spaces. ❐ Quality Assured National Warranties; Improvements with Community Benefit The winner was SEH BAC. An established home improver, SEH BAC, has over 40 years’ experience in transforming homes. Inthe judges view it’s embracing change whilst delivering exemplar service initiative demonstrates a determined approach to providing aservice to allow customers, throughout East Anglia, London and the Home Counties thatexceeds expectations. The runner-up, Shermin Finance, was established in 1976. Shermin Finance has more than 30 years experience in home improvement finance. Its mission statement says ‘We share your aspirations, understand your objectives, and are prepared to travelthatextra mile to create the best finance solution for your business. We have a product portfolio that takes full advantage of the opportunities that exist for the many home improvement retailers that enjoy our support. The cornerstone of our service excellence is the combination of market leading experience with the embracing of information technology.’ ❐ Schüco UK; Aluminium Systems for Windows, Doors and Facades The winner,Crystal Glazing Solutions,worked on a house which overlooks RutlandWater and wascompletely refurbished last year. The client wanted slim sightlines to maximise transparency and daylight and aparticular type and design of ironmongery which necessitated a bespoke solution. Careful consideration had to be given tothe choice of colour and because of the location special attention had to be given toweatherproofing. The judges considered that the choice of windows, doors, sliding doors and rooflights complemented the traditional stone façade and slate roof. The runner-up, The Bi-Fold Door Factory. This project involved afive bedroom Victorian home that was purchased by a residential developer in a very dilapidated condition. The building was virtually gutted and completely remodelled. The entire ground floor was opened up and extended on twosides. Because of the height of the openings on the ground floor, bi-folding doors were the only viable solution. In this way significant amounts of height, airy and usable space has been added thanks to the extensive use of Schüco aluminium window systems including curtain walling. ❐ 30 The Fabricator 2015
