Tell Us: NEW OVERTIME RULE IMPACT
The Obama administration has proposed new overtime regulations that could impact
employers and employees. The proposal is a rule change which increases the salary
threshold making millions more employees eligible for overtime compensation by
reducing the number of employees who can currently be exempt.
Under the proposal, the current threshold for executive, administrative and professional
employees would increase from their current level of $23,660 to $50,440. Employers
could be forced to make decisions to re-classify their employees to non-exempt status or
increase their salaries to retain exempt status. Reclassification to non-exempt status
means employees will be required to track their hours and “punch a clock” getting paid
for only the hours they have worked.
This is a significant change that will have an impact on business operations and economy
nationwide. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce suggests that such a shift would lead to
negative effects for employees losing flexibility, benefits, hours, growth opportunities
and earning potential.
The Dubuque Area Chamber has concerns on how this proposed rule change could
impact our members and business community. The attached Overtime Regulation
Impact Questionnaire is designed to help you determine the impact of this proposal on
your operations. We want to help you understand and plan for any proposed changes
ahead. More importantly we want to share your feedback with members of Congress to
demonstrate how this rule will affect our business community. With your help we can
build a case and echo the concerns to describe the impact of this proposal.
Please send us your findings after the completing the questionnaire and we will collectively
submit to our legislators.
Please feel free to contact us with
