WHAT IS APPRENTICESHIP?
At Sussex Tech we call it "the other four year degree". It is the best way to learn a skilled trade. It combines
on the job skills training provided by a sponsoring employer with related instruction theory classes here at
Sussex Tech. Employees sponsored thru the Department of Labor are considered "state registered
apprentices". Non-apprentices may attend these classes by paying tuition but must comply with all State of
Delaware and Sussex Tech apprenticeship rules, regulations, and policies to receive credit.
STATE REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP AGREEMENT
Employer
Delaware Department of Labor
An employer sponsors an employee through the Delaware Department of Labor as a “State Registered
Apprentice”. This means the “sponsoring employer” agrees to train the apprentice on the job (O.J.T.) for
2000 hours per year. The apprentice agrees to attend related instruction classes at Sussex Tech for 144 hours
per year.
When the apprentice accumulates 8000 hours of O.J.T. and 576 hours of related instruction, the sponsoring
employer can request that the Delaware Department of Labor issue Journeyperson papers.
District will notify you of the decision, advise of the right to a hearing, and provide the hearing
You have the right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in
the student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.
