Upon conviction, there were nineteen crimes which turned criminals
into colonists. British rogues guilty of those crimes were sentenced
to Australia rather than death. This punishment by “transportation”
began in 1788, and many of the lawless died at sea. The roughhewn
prisoners who reached Australia lived in servitude under the lash.
Pioneers in a frontier penal colony, they forged a new country, and

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Located at the very heart of the Stags Leap District, the original
Stags’ Leap winery (established in 1893) continues a proud
winemaking heritage in the prestigious appellation that bears the
winery name. The unique terroir and ideal microclimate support
classic viticultural standards of land use and winemaking that remain
as relevant today as they were a century ago. Framed by the dramatic
palisades to the east, the 240-acre property is planted to 90 acres of
vineyards and divided into 23 blocks that perfectly match each grape
variety with its ideal soil type, rootstock and trellis system.
