VIRGIN AMERICA LETS MODERNISM FLY
Airline Known for its Stylish Flights Teams Up with Modernism Week to Launch
Unique Mid-Century Modern Exhibit at Its Palm Springs Airport Gate
Travelers Can Also Enter for a Chance to Win a Getaway to Palm Springs and
VIP Access to Modernism Week Festivities*
Motion picture, stage and television icon, Shirley Jones will appear with
her son, Patrick Cassidy at the famed Purple Room Palm Springs in
four very special performances presented by Dick Taylor on February
11th, 12th and 13th at 7 PM, and, again on February 14th at 1 PM. The
intimate setting of this legendary nightclub offers guests an up-close and
personal musical and historic experience with these great performers.
At her first audition in New York, Ms. Jones sang for composer Richard
Rogers, who asked her to stay in the theatre so his partner, Oscar
Hammerstein, could also see and hear her. It was a life-changing
experience for Jones, as she was immediately signed to the only
personal contract anyone had ever had with the famous team, and as a
result, her career skyrocketed.
Virgin America, the California-based airline known for bringing the fun and
style back to flying, and Modernism Week, an annual festival in Palm Springs
that highlights the mid-century modern design that Palm Springs is known
for, are partnering to create an interactive vintage modern exhibit at the
airline’s gate at Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) during the festival
from February 11-21, 2016. In a nod to the golden age of flying and Virgin
America’s own stylish flight experience, the partners have teamed up to design
a chic, mid-century take on the traditional airport gate through a unique realworld
exhibit that will include late 1960s era lounge chairs with matching
ottomans, tables and Lucite lamps – all set atop a chic mod rug at the airline’s
PSP gate. Designed by Marc Joseph of the Wonderama vintage furniture
and art boutique in Palm Springs – which launched during Modernism Week
2015 – flyers traveling to Palm Springs during this year’s Modernism Week
on Virgin America will be stepping back in time. The gate exhibit will also
include a custom-made backdrop by Los Angeles artist, Nat Reed, who is
renowned internationally for his interpretations of the “Familiar Modern.”
Reed’s last show, “Post-Fabricated, Reimagining the Already,” was a highlight of
Modernism Week last year.
“The City of Palm Springs is thrilled Virgin America and Modernism Week, two
globally famous brands known for incredible style and sophistication, have
partnered to celebrate the magic of ultra-cool Palm Springs and all that our
legendary resort destination has to offer,” said Mayor Robert Moon. “It’s just
more proof Palm Springs truly is like no place else.”
Virgin America first launched its service to Palm Springs in 2011. The airline
has since expanded its seasonal PSP service to daily nonstop service six days
a week from SFO-PSP as well as nonstop flight service from PSP-JFK. Virgin
America is known for its signature mood-lit aircraft and stylish design with
three custom-designed classes of service, touch-screen personal entertainment
and an on-demand food and cocktail menu on every flight. Virgin America
has been named the “Best Domestic Airline” in both Condé Nast Traveler’s
Readers’ Choice Awards and in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for the
past eight consecutive years.
Jones was cast in the film Oklahoma in the role of Laurie, followed by
starring roles in Carousel, The Music Man and April Love. In a departure
from movie musicals, she created the dramatic role of prostitute Lulu
Baines, playing opposite Burt Lancaster in the film Elmer Gantry,
winning her first Oscar. Jones then was cast in the role that made her
a household name, as the harried head of The Partridge Family in the
popular television series that ran for four year.
Since then, Jones has appeared in dozens of movies, television and
stage roles, including a record-breaking Broadway revival of 42nd Street.
She’s earned three Emmy nominations, and performs at standing-room
only (SRO) symphony concerts and speaking engagements throughout
the United States and the world.
Patrick Cassidy is Shirley Jones’ middle son, and is a highly regarded
actor, singer and director. Last summer, he starred in A Little Night
Music for the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He
had the honor of recreating the role his father, Jack Cassidy, originated
in 1966 at the Dallas Theatre Company’s production of It’s a Bird, It’s a
Plane, It’s Superman. Cassidy starred opposite Patti LuPone in Annie
Get Your Gun on Broadway and played the lead role of Julian Marsh
in 42nd Street (starring opposite his mother). Other Broadway credits
include Aida, Pirates of Penzance and Leader of the Pack. Cassidy’s film
credits include Longtime Companion, I’ll Do Anything, I Won’t Dance and
Burning Love. On television, he has made appearances on such shows
as Law and Order, Bay City Blues, Smallville and Dirty Dancing.
Shirley Jones and Patrick Cassidy are a must-see combination of
entertainment, music and memories. Dick Taylor Presents has been working
with the Purple Room to bring in some of the biggest acts in the business.
Jones and Cassidy will be at the Purple Room from February 11th through
the 14th. Tickets are $90, $85 and $80 (based on seating) and are available
at purpleroompalmsprings.com or by calling 800-838-3006.
“With a focus on design, Virgin America has always been about bringing the
magic and style back to flying – and we’re excited to partner with Modernism
Week to add a touch of 60s glamour to the airport at Palm Springs through this
unique exhibition”, said Virgin America Chief Marketing Officer, Luanne Calvert.
“The exhibit is a fun nod to the best in design, and we look forward to making
travelers headed to this year’s Modernism Week feel like their last name is
Draper – with a beautiful in-flight experience on Virgin America and a welcome
at PSP like no other.”
Today, the airline is also launching a “Let Modernism Fly” fly-away contest for
a chance to win a stylish getaway for two * to the Modernism Week festival
in Palm Springs, including roundtrip flights on Virgin America, four-night
accommodations at The Saguaro Palm Springs and premier tickets to the
hottest events. In addition, guests at Virgin America’s PSP gate who dress up
in their mid-century throwback finest between February 11 and 21 and post a
photo with the hashtag #LetModFly will be automatically entered for a chance
to win a complimentary upgrade on the airline.
“We are excited to partner with Virgin America on this promotion and
encourage all travelers to visit the vintage gate display at the Palm Springs
International Airport during Modernism Week,” said Modernism Week Board
Chairman, J. Chris Mobley. “The airline’s commitment to quality design and to
Palm Springs as a destination is very much appreciated by our attendees, who
travel here from all over the world.”
Modernism Week’s signature February festival takes place February 11-21,
2016, highlighting mid-century modern design, architecture, art, fashion and
culture in the Greater Palm Springs area of Southern California. The annual
11-day festival features a rich array of events including the Modernism Show
