WINTERISATION—It’s not just for when it gets
cold!
Most boat owners are well
versed with winter
maintenance program for
their yacht, so I won’t bore
you with a step-by-step
‘how to’ article, rather , WHY
it’s important, even if it’s
not going to be cold over the
winter period.
For SD Marine Ltd trying to

it’s important that owners
are aware of the importance
of continuing the regular
maintenance which includes
the winterisation of the
engine, cleaning canvas
works and sheets and
generally tidying away
cushions or furnishings to
avoid dampness. Generally a
de-humidifier and small
heater can be plugged in to
keep the boat dry and
devoid of excess moisture.

The diesel engine on a yacht
or powerboat is an essential
component and needs to be
used or laid up if not being
used. The fuel stabilisation
can be an issue at this time
of the year. Ethanol
enhanced gasoline is
susceptible to absorbing
moisture and condensation
on the inside of the tank
when the temperature
changes. In the winter this
increases and can cause the
ethanol to un-bond with the
gasoline. This is corrosive
and is heavier than gasoline
