BODMIN MOOR
06
01872 261735
The long-awaited Drama was mainly shot in Cornwall. When
the cast and crew filmed during the summers of 2014/2015 they
caused quite a flurry of excitement. Aidan Turner and Eleanor
Tomlinson were spotted up down the county.

Here is Visit Cornwall’s
behind-the-scenes guide
to the towns and beaches that
took a turn in the spotlight:
Truro
While Corsham in Wiltshire doubled as Truro for
filming, the City itself was Winston Graham’s true
inspiration for the story and was the location
of choice for the world premiere of the series.
Producers, writers and the headline cast joined lucky
locals for an exclusive viewing of the first episode and
won their first of many rave reviews.
PORTHGWARRA
Once a thriving fishing cove, the beautiful
Porthgwarra sits at the heart of St Aubyn Estates and
boasts a peaceful existence with its days surrounded
by wildflowers and birdlife. The tunnel cut through
the rock makes it perfect for swimming and rock
pooling while the South West Coast Path offers
unsurpassed views. Stop in the Porthgwarra Cove
Cafe (seasonal) or pack a traditional picnic for an 18th
Century Poldark experience.
Bodmin Moor
The cast and crew found themselves on Bodmin
Moor for a large part of their time in Cornwall.
Scenes featuring the exterior of Ross Poldark’s
cottage, Nampara, were shot here along with many
capturing the cast on horseback. With a rugged
character and wild streak, Bodmin Moor provides
the perfect backdrop to Poldark’s plot of passion
and family dramatics.
BOTALLACK
TO LE VA N T
Location managers couldn’t resist the rich mining
heritage of the stretch of west Cornwall coast linking
Botallack and Levant. Cameras rolled with Levant
Mine playing the role of the fictional Tressiders
Rolling Mill while Owles and Crowns near Botallack
starred as Wheal Leisure.
Charlestown
Charlestown near St Austell, famed for its collection
of ships and traditional appearance, has long caught
the attention of location managers and in some
scenes plays the role of the principal town. As you
wander along the side of the original Grade II Listed
harbour complete with Tall Ships, you can almost
imagine that you’ve been cast as an extra or have
been transported to Graham Winston’s 18th
Century setting.
PADSTOW AREA
For some of the cliff scenes the filming action
moved to the Padstow area. Fans of north Cornwall
will recognise the spectacular views across the
Camel Estuary and Tregirls beach, while the beauty
of the wide sandy beach of Porthcothan is hard
to miss in the scenes featuring Poldark’s fictional
Nampara Cove.
St Agnes Head
Another area that enjoyed
a taste of Hollywood is St
Agnes Head where iconic
engine houses perch
serenely on the cliff-tops
offering a silent reminder
of Cornwall’s mining
heyday. A natural location
choice, it doubles as
Nampara Valley in
the show.
Church Cove
Gunwallow
Church Cove Gunwallow on The Lizard relived its
smuggling past when Aidan Turner and a hoard
of other cast members and extras descended
to film night-time ship wrecking scenes. While
the events of the night highlight the nicer side of
Turner’s character, the villagers don’t come off
in such a good light - away from the cameras
though and the scene on a normal day is
much more peaceful. An attractive sandy cove
overlooked by the tiny church of St Wynwallow.
NATURAL BEAUTY
01872 261735
Nearly a third of Cornwall is designated
as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
and includes some spectacular coast,
the rugged uplands and tranquil
wooded river valleys.
ST LOY

CONSERVE
& ENHANCE
The Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty, one of 46 in the UK, is unique in
that it consists of 12 separate geographical
areas but is one single AONB.
These sections include 10 stretches of Cornish
coastline as well as the Camel Estuary and Bodmin
Moor. Nearly 80% of the protected land is farmed and
of course people live there, work there, travel through
and, in large numbers, come to visit. The purpose of
the AONB designation, enshrined in national law, is to
‘conserve and enhance the landscape.
FERRYSIDE
INTERNATIONALLY
acclaimed
The Cornwall AONB has the same status and
protection as a National Park. It is looked
after by a partnership made up of Cornwall
Council, voluntary bodies, landowners and
communities. At the heart of the partnership
approach is the Management Plan which states
that the Cornwall AONB is an internationally
and nationally important landscape valued for
embodying the special character of Cornwall.
Businesses often thrive in the most beautiful
areas (and many would love to relocate to them).
Fishing and the marine industries contribute to the
character of the AONB and the landscape is often
the inspiration for Cornwall’s creative artists, writers
and performers. Protecting the landscape enhances
bio-diversity and ensures the survival of many rare
species. And the AONB is home to many hugely
important historic and archaeological sites while
the geology is complex, fascinating and varied.
So protecting and enhancing the landscape makes
sound economic sense.
But perhaps most important of all, the landscape
that makes up the Cornwall AONB is in our trust.
It is our duty to preserve, enhance and take care
of it - for the generations to come.
Accommodation FINDER
This breath-taking coastline, full of
secluded bays and vast beaches, is a
popular destination for surfers, cyclists and
walkers, as well as those looking for a more
relaxing pace to their holiday. The vibrant
resorts of Bude, Perranporth and Newquay
looking to catch some waves should head for
Polzeath, Watergate Bay and Portreath. The
picturesque coves of Port Isaac and St Agnes
Marvel are fun to wander, and the spectacular
scenery at Boscastle and Tintagel must be
seen to be appreciated.
West Cornwall
The wonders of West Cornwall are waiting to be explored.
Visit England’s most Westerly point, Land’s End, the old stones
on the moors of West Penwith, the artists’ paradise of St Ives,
the brilliantly unique Minack Theatre at Porthcurno and the
fishing communities of Newlyn, Cadgwith and Porthleven. Take
the causeway to St Michael’s Mount to enjoy panoramic views
across Mount’s Bay towards Penzance. Discover the beautiful
Lizard Peninsula with its sheltered beaches, pretty villages and
heathland area.
ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT

In contrast to the North Coast, in the South you’ll find
a gentler coastline with a mild, oceanic climate that
supports lush, subtropical gardens. Explore the scenic
estuaries of Helford, the Fowey and the Fal, as well as
the pretty villages and harbours of Looe, Polperro and
Mevagissey. The beautiful stretches of white sand at
Whitsand, Gerrans and St Austell are great for seaside
walks or a day at the beach, while the bustling waterfront
communities of Falmouth and Fowey have much on offer.
South Coast
visitcornwall.com
27
In ruggedly beautiful scenery, discover craggy tors,
standing stones, expanses of heather moorland,
medieval farms and moorland villages. This designated
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty truly is a walkers’
paradise. By contrast, the Tamar Valley, now part of the
World Heritage Site, is a wide wooded valley, rich in history
and a haven for wildlife. Four ancient towns – Launceston,
Tavistock, Callington and Saltash – can be found along the
valley, as well as many historic houses and disused mines.
Truro
As well as being historic, quirky and fun – a
maze of cobbled quarters, streets that beg to
be explored and magical mews full of hidden
gems, Truro is littered with friendly pubs,
coffee houses and new favourite hangouts to
stumble upon and settle in. Funky restaurants
and classy eateries – scores of which have all
chosen to cluster here in a real buzz of a place
that surprises and delights at every turn.
CITY OF LIGHTS
Cornwall’s architecturally elegant business and shopping
centre is where unique local independents and market
traders rub shoulders with the usual national retailers
you would expect to find in a bustling city. Add to this a
growing band of cutting edge galleries dotted around,
and this is what gives shopping in Truro a real eclectic
feel with a creative vibe.

Cornwall’s
CITY FIX
The multi-screen cinema is just a stone’s throw from
The Hall for Cornwall – home to a constantly changing
programme of the best in live entertainment featuring
artistes who love coming to this county as much as you do.
Then, there is the hugely engaging Royal Cornwall Museum
telling stories of Cornwall and its fascinating history.
Rising magnificently above it all, and not to be missed –
because you can’t! – is the breathtaking architecture of
the cathedral. Take a break from the hustle and bustle to
spend some time absorbing the serenity of this magnificent
building. Admire the stunning stained glass windows and
gothic artwork, visit the coffee shop or relax and take a seat
in the impressive nave and allow yourself to be captivated
by the music of the choir or organist for a while.
If you are looking to take time out, and want to
enjoy some open space, Truro also offers beautifully
kept parks and award winning gardens, which are
easily accessible from the city centre, perfect for
relaxing and letting the kids run free. With a splash
of colour from the many beautifully maintained floral
displays around every corner too – it’s a city that
prides itself on its gardens and it breathes through
its welcoming open spaces.
The Cornish are proud of all their natural wonders, and
rightly so, but they also know how to build a capital city
too – and a visit to their county isn’t complete without
a trip to visit a hidden jewel in the Cornish crown. The
county’s capital city lies right at its heart – just a short
five miles from the surfing haven of the north coast, and
with some of the best sailing in the UK practically sitting
on its south coast. Getting there is easy too, with nine
city centre carparks and two new Park and Ride services.
There are also well connected rail and bus stations, as well
as a passenger ferry service to take you in and out of the
city by boat along the river. So wherever you’re staying in
Cornwall, the great little city of Truro is just a skip away.
CHOOSING YOUR
Accommodation
From cosy self-catering cottages to first class hotels, the
warm welcome of a farmhouse bed and breakfast or the fun
and facilities of a holiday park, you’ll be spoilt for choice for
somewhere to stay in the accommodation pages.
CHOOSING
THE LOCATION
We’ve arranged accommodation in the
geographical area to which it relates, e.g. All
Cornwall, Farm Accommodation, South Coast,
West Cornwall, Bodmin Moor and Tamar Valley,
North Coast, and by accommodation type,
e.g. hotel or self-catering, and geographically
within that area. For a more precise location,
we’ve included a map grid reference on each
advertisement. For example, a map grid
reference of K2 indicates that the property is in
the Bude area of the North Coast.
HOW TO BOOK
With high season accommodation much in
demand, especially self-catering properties,
we recommend booking as early as
possible. Once you’ve made your choice,
contact the accommodation establishment
or agency directly. Please remember that,
in Britain, a telephone booking or written
confirmation is generally accepted as a
legally binding contract. You may also
be required to send a deposit, and this
could be forfeited should you cancel your
reservation.
Here is a typical example of an accommodation
advertisement which you’ll find in the pages of this guide.
South
COAST
Stretching from Rame Head to the Helford River,
the South Coast of Cornwall is a tranquil blend
of lush green countryside and a pretty coastline,
scattered with hidden bays, traditional fishing
villages and exotic gardens.
SOUTH COAST
Crossing the border into Cornwall, you’ll find the twin
villages of Kingsand and Cawsand as the Tamar River
meets the sea. The calm waters here are perfect for sailing
and windsurfing and offer some of the best dive sites in
the UK. Nearby is the wide golden expanse of Whitsand
Bay, ideal for surfers and day-trippers alike.
The working port of Looe is just the place to
buy freshly caught fish, as well as enjoy the mix
of shops and eateries dotted around the town.
Further along, wonder the traffic-free, narrow
streets of Polperro towards the small harbour to
admire the fisherman’s cottages, sail lofts and
shops selling local crafts and treats.
Take the Bodinnick Ferry across the Fowey River to the
town of Fowey with its upmarket shops, trendy cafés
and wonderful harbour. Upstream, hidden in a magical
woodland setting, the village of Lerryn is said to have been
the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame’s book, “The Wind in
the Willows”. At the ancient town of Lostwithiel, once the
capital of Cornwall, is a striking 12th Century castle built for
Edward the Black Prince.
The tall ships and rows of 18th Century
cottages in Charlestown give a glimpse
of a bygone era, while at Mevagissey,
beyond St Austell and the ever-popular
Eden Project, a scenic boat trip allows
access to the hidden coves once used
by smugglers.
Stretching along the river on the immense Fal
Estuary, St Mawes is a peaceful place to visit. Hard
then to imagine that Henry VIII built its castle
to protect against invasions from the sea! Take
to the water on board one of the many ferries
that cross the estuary and keep a look out for a
multitude of wildlife. The climate is so mild here
that tea bushes flourish a few miles away at the
Tregothnan Estate.
Truro, at the
head of the River
Fal, showcases
fine examples
of Cornish
architecture,
such as the
19th Century
Neo-Gothic
cathedral, as
well as many
Victorian and Georgian buildings.
Tempting boutiques, fine restaurants
and fashionable bars make the city a
shopper’s paradise.
WEST CORNWALL
West CORNWALL
The laidback town of Sennen is worth a stop;
it retains its old fishing port charm while
embracing its status as a great surfing destination.
At Porthgwarra you’ll find lofty rock stacks,
steep slipways and mysterious tunnels bored
into the rocks, while at Porthcurno gorgeous
sandy beaches await. The small harbour and
pretty narrow streets of Mousehole earned it the
description of the ‘loveliest village in England’ by
Dylan Thomas. Across the bay you’ll catch a glimpse
of the distinctive shape of St Michael’s Mount
with its fairy tale castle. The lively seaside town of
Penzance is dotted with fine Regency and Georgian
buildings along with a number of museums and
galleries and a gorgeous Art Deco swimming pool
on the seafront. Perhaps best known for the famous
floral dance that takes place every May, Helston is
also home to the oldest private brewery in the UK.
Sample their famous Spingo at the Blue Anchor Inn.
Jutting out to sea, the Lizard Peninsula
offers a change of scenery and a haven
for exceptional plants and flowers. The
beautiful beach of Praa Sands is a perfect
seaside destination for families, and at
Porthleven you’ll find local crafts on sale,
as well as restaurants specialising in
freshly caught seafood.
Dotted with kite surfers
and paragliders, Hayle’s
vast golden sands sweep
around the bay where
you can spot St Ives in
the distance.
A firm favourite with
artists for decades
due to the light and
landscape of the
area, this pretty
little town is bustling with
shops, eateries and plenty of art galleries
and studios, as well as the iconic Tate St Ives museum.
On the road west you’ll meander through a
staggeringly beautiful landscape and past tiny
moorland hamlets. Zennor is one of the richest
areas of archaeological remains in Europe, boasting
Neolithic quoits, burial chambers and stone circles,
and St Just was at the hub of the copper and tin
mining boom in the 19th Century.
Inland at the well-preserved Iron Age villages of
Buffeted by Atlantic waves, Cornwall’s North Coast is
a seventy-mile expanse of cliffs, bays, beaches and
clusters of seaside villages and towns. A big draw for
water sports enthusiasts, it’s equally appealing for all
kinds of holiday.
North
Rounding the corner from the Penwith Peninsula and
heading east, the coastline is exposed to the full force of
the Atlantic. In Portreath the harbour wall helps to shape
a perfect surfing wave known as ‘The Vortex’. In contrast,
the concealed beach at Chapel Porth, just a couple of
miles further along, provides the perfect spot to relax while
listening to the roar of the sea. Inland at St Agnes you’ll
find quaint shops and pubs, and the town makes a good
starting point for exploring parts of the coastal footpath.
The three miles of golden sand, big surf and
pretty sand dunes make popular Perranporth
a great example of the fantastic beaches to
be found on the North Coast. Walk the beach,
relax on the sand or grab a drink in one of the
beachside cafés. If you’re after something
a little quieter Crantock beach, on the River
Gannel estuary, is a lovely spot for a picnic.
COAST
Newquay, perhaps one of the best-known destinations
in the county and proud surf capital of Britain, is a
wonderful mix of vibrant resort and beautiful scenery.
The town is brimming with shops, cafes and restaurants,
and is considered to be the cultural and festival centre of
Cornwall, while its beaches are some of the finest around.
Head to nearby Watergate Bay, where at the
Extreme Academy you can learn all manner of
water sports, while the gentle waves at Mawgan
Porth make it a perfect place to learn to surf.
High on the cliffs, the views from the top of
Bedruthan Steps are spectacular, and equally
breath taking is the crescent shaped beach at
Harlyn Bay. Inland on the Camel River estuary,
Wadebridge provides for all your retail needs, be
they picnic treats, general provisions or surf gear.
Renowned for its fashionable shops and eateries,
Padstow is a lovely place to spend the day. Take
the ferry across to Rock and enjoy both sides
of this beautiful estuary. Perfect conditions at
Polzeath make it a surfer’s paradise, popular with
both participants and spectators. Many of the
little seaside towns along this stretch of coast are
well worth visiting, such as Trebarwith Strand,
formerly a port for shipping the area’s abundant
slate. Tintagel, steeped in Arthurian legend, is
home to Merlin’s Cave and the stunning ruins of
a 13th Century castle, said to be the birthplace of
King Arthur.
HIGHLIGHTS
Delabole’s 600-year-old slate quarry boasts the
largest man-made hole in Europe, which plunges
400 feet down into solid rock and measures a
mile and a half in circumference.
Messages and offerings are left on rock ledges at
the sixty-foot waterfall at St Nectan’s Glen, a place
of spiritual healing since pre-Christian times.
Fabulous views, rolling fairways and firm
greens all help to make St Enodoc near Rock
one of the finest links golf courses in the UK,
earning it the ranking of 55th in the world.
The five and a half mile stretch of the Camel Trail
between Wadebridge to Padstow is best enjoyed
by bike (available to hire at either end).
Climb the highest cliff in Cornwall near
the strangely named Strangles Beach
between Bude and Boscastle, towering
at an impressive 742 feet.
The award-winning Camel Valley Vineyard near
Wadebridge offers a fascinating tasting tour.
With its charming harbour and traditional
fisherman’s cottages, Boscastle’s setting is
hard to beat, while at Crackington Haven the
famous colourful chevron rock formations
start to appear creating a small cove. Near the
border with Devon, Bude combines spectacular
beaches, great surf and an attractive town to
form a welcoming seaside resort.
Bodmin Moor
Discover the dramatic contrast between
wild and rugged Bodmin Moor and the
lush green hills of The Tamar Valley.
AND THE
TAMAR VALLEY
BODMIN MOOR AND THE TAMAR VALLEY
One hundred and fifty square miles of beautiful, wind
swept moorland provides the setting for excellent walks
and boundless opportunities to uncover just what makes
this area such a treasure. The importance of the moor
has earned it a number of designations including an Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site
status in recognition of its 4,000-year-old tin mining
industry. Most of the moor has been declared a Site of
Special Scientific Interest.
Liskeard, a busy market town, lies at the gateway to the moor
a few miles inland from the South Coast. Here 19th Century
buildings give a glimpse of the town’s prosperous past, once
a centre for the mining industry. Beyond, hallmarks of human
habitation in a wild land that stretch back 6,000 years include
burial chambers, ancient stones and holy wells, like the fine
example at the village of St Cleer. Made famous by Daphne du
Maurier’s novel, the Jamaica Inn at Bolventor is an imposing
sight in a bleak landscape. Just one of the historical wonders
to be found in the area, a 12th Century church at Temple
was originally built by the Knights Templers for travellers
on pilgrimage to Ireland. The town of Bodmin is a good spot
to base yourself to explore the surrounding area, and is also
the starting point of the Camel Trail cycle trail that leads all
the way to Padstow. Five miles away, the village of Blisland
has a fine Norman church, pretty stone houses and
award-winning pub on the village green from where you
can access the edge of the moor.
The ancient Cornish
capital of Launceston on
the edge of the moor,
with its narrow streets
and 1000-year-old
castle, offers a good
selection of shops, a
market in the town
square and some
delightful art galleries.
Nearby, Hallworthy’s
busy market is bursting
with local produce
and weekly livestock
auctions.
The sheltered setting and
gentle climate of the Tamar
Valley allows for a rich and
diverse vegetation and
it’s easy to see why it has
been designated an Area
of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. Lying on the banks
of the slow moving Tamar
River, the picturesque
village of Calstock hosts
a multitude of fairs,
festivals and art exhibitions
throughout the year. The
area’s prosperous farming
heritage can still be enjoyed
through an amazing array
of produce such as fresh
vegetables, soft fruits and
flowers that are often sold
on the roadside, and at
Cothele House you can
learn about the area’s
historic commerce in
a fascinating museum.
This stunning estuary is
a haven for wildlife and is
best appreciated from the
water on a boat trip or even
explored by canoe.

Centres
By road
The M4, M5 and M6 motorways have
made travel to Cornwall simple and
straightforward, while within Cornwall
itself, the two major holiday routes, the
A30 and A38 continue to improve, with
fast dual carriageways as far as Carland
Cross, Mitchell, and most of the way to
Penzance. Follow the M5 to Exeter, after
which you will take either the A30 or A38
into Cornwall, depending on your final
destination. Alternatively, if you enter
Cornwall via North Devon, then there is the
Atlantic Highway, the A39, which you can
join at junction 27 on the M5.
