DA VINCI’S DRAWINGS
‘I have always felt it is my destiny to build a
machine that would allow a man to fly,’ wrote
Leonardo da Vinci, who famously created
such masterpieces as the Mona Lisa and The
Last Supper. Da Vinci was also a remarkable
engineer, as the new exhibition at the Science
Museum shows. The Renaissance man’s
mechanical drawings are brought to life in
The Mechanics of Genius (from 10 Feb;
p. 46), from flying machines to driving
apparatus and weapons. He may not have
realised his ambition to make a man fly, but
in looking to the natural world for inspiration
he inspired mankind for many generations.
