NIGHTLIFE BULLSEYE! FOREST IN THE CLOUDS Rise up to a woodland canopy this month at heated rooftop bar Treehouse at SkyLounge (to 28 Feb). This temporary winter terrace at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London, near the Tower of London, is designed to look and feel like an enchanted forest, with breathtaking views of London’s skyscrapers all around. Warm up with a hot rum and peach tea or spiced apple toddy while you dine on sweet and savoury plates such as spicy chicken nuggets with bourbon dip. A selection of wines, Champagnes, shots and bottled beers is also available, but we recommend the Treehouse Punch topped with Rekorderlig – one of the tastiest ciders in the world! The English have always enjoyed a game of darts, but the ‘sport’ has come a long way since it was played by beer-bellied blokes scoffing pork scratchings in smoke-filled pubs. If Flight Club’s aim was to bring this addictive game – where darts are thrown at a circular board for points – into the modern age, then it has certainly hit the target. On the edge of the City and hipster haven Shoreditch, Flight Club is a cavernous venue packed with business people and trendy young things alike. Despite its size, it is warm and welcoming, thanks to its dark wood panelling, leather sofas and twinkly fairy lights. With three different throw lines, anyone can play and anyone can win – you may surprise yourself and score a bullseye! Bespoke technology adds up the scores for you, so you can concentrate on the important things – eating and drinking. You don’t even have to break off from your game for a bar run – just press a button on an iPad screen and a waiter will come over to take your order. The cocktail menu is reasonably priced – try the slushy Pina Colada. Or you could play darts the British way, with a tankard of beer in hand. Sharing plates include popcorn mussels, smoked salt and chilli vinegar or buttermilk fried chicken with chipotle and lime mayo. With friendly staff, Flight Club has given darts a new lease of life. EXOTIC ORIOLE Hidden beneath London’s iconic Smithfield Market, which has been trading for more than 800 years, Oriole is a new cocktail bar with live swing, jazz and blues music. The décor has all the glamour of a 1950s nightclub, with exotic touches from all four corners of the globe. The theme continues with the cocktail menu, which is divided into The Old World, The New World and The Orient. The ingredients in the cocktails are not like anything you would usually think to mix your spirits with, whether that’s sorbet, geranium ice cream, or mustard foam.
