Introduction Brain injury occurs when the brain’s tissue is damaged or is not working properly. Anything that can damage brain tissue can cause a brain injury. Brain injuries can be the result of a blow to the head, such as from a fall, sports injury, car accident, an assault, cycling or from any other outside influence. There are other ways in which the brain may suffer an injury without a blow to the head. For example, the brain can lose its blood supply or a blood vessel can break so that bleeding into the brain tissue occurs. This is usually referred to as a ‘stroke’. A stroke is one of the most frequent causes of brain injury in older people. Other causes of injury to the brain can be a drug overdose, a tumour, an infection, a lack of oxygen or chemical poisoning. Sometimes the term ‘head injury’ is used instead of brain injury. This can be misleading as a head injury can include other injuries to the head, such as jaw or skull fractures, which may not involve the brain. This handbook is concerned with injuries to the brain and will refer to these as ‘brain injuries’. Clinical identification of a brain injury includes one or more of the following: • Confusion or disorientation • Loss of consciousness • Post-traumatic amnesia 5
Effects of a Brain Injury The effects of a brain injury are wide ranging and may result in the following: Physical disabilities Sensory disabilities (e.g. sight, smell) Personality changes Thinking (cognitive) disabilities (e.g. difficulty thinking clearly, planning and following through, memory problems) Difficulty expressing or understanding language Many people who have a brain injury continue to have ongoing problems which may include some of the following: Aggression Depression Anxiety Impulsiveness Mood swings Poor concentration Difficulty with problem-solving Passivity Socially inapropriate behaviour Changes in thinking processes Loss of memory 6
