Mission
The Workforce Development Services Division at Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) offers a broad range of
high quality, cost effective education and training services to individuals, as well as business, industry, government, and
professional organizations in support of economic development and community enrichment.
The Division is comprised of seven integrated programming units that work closely with local business and industry
Industrial Technology: Blue Collar to Gold Collar
ESCC’s Industrial Technology program prepares students to be high-skilled, multicraft
technicians who can work in a variety of industrial and commercial settings from
manufacturing to aerospace. The broad-based interdisciplinary curriculum includes safety,
schematics, mechanical diagrams, and welding. The types of machinery and equipment
used in industrial and commercial facilities and operations involve electrical, hydraulic,
pneumatic, and mechanical devices as well as programmable logic controlled and heating,
ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Technicians are needed to build,
install, repair, and maintain equipment and systems that keep businesses running smoothly.
Skilled laborers who were formerly considered blue collar workers are now being referred
to as gold collar workers due to today’s technology and training which utilizes proven
assessment and diagnostic processes. Program graduates have gone to work for the
Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS), Tyson Foods, Bayshore Concrete, and Perdue
Farms. A number of these students participated in the College’s internship program, and
many of them earned valuable industry credentials while at ESCC.
To learn more about ESCC’s Industrial Technology Program, visit the college website at es.vccs.edu, or contact program
advisor, John Floyd at 757-789-1778 or at jfloyd@es.vccs.edu.
The Role of the Workforce Development Contract Training Coordinator (WFD-CTC)
ESCC is proud to introduce Joe Betit who started work recently as our Workforce Development
Contract Training Coordinator (CTC). His job is to assist any size business with training and
development needs, ranging from a small entrepreneurial startup to the Shore’s largest employers.
Betit works with clients to understand their current training needs and then identifies training sources
that meet those needs. He assists the client with navigating the wide variety of existing training
resources that are available through the college’s regular credit programs, our online training partners,
short term non-credit programs, and through specialized classes.
We believe that continued staff training and development help ensure that the Eastern Shore can grow and maintain
sustainable commerce which provides good paying jobs.
ESCC and CDS: Potential partners to provide Tractor Trailer Training
ESCC and CDS Tractor Trailer Training are committed to providing
professional training and job placement assistance to its students.
With 16 years plus of operation, CDS has many years of experience
in trucking, with many of those years in truck driving training and
placement of new drivers.
The program consists of classroom instruction and on-the-road training.
Students enjoy our hands-on approach to training. CDS has more trucks
and instructors than other schools. This allows students more truck time
and better quality training. Most schools operate with 1 or 2 trucks and
1 or 2 instructors trying to train 10-15 students. At CDS students train
in small groups of 1-3 students per truck and instructor. ESCC plans to
offer this program in Spring 2016.
For more information about becoming a professional driver, please call ESCC Workforce Development Services at 757-789-1757.
