Building A Sustainable Rural Business
The Building a Sustainable Rural Business course guides participants through the elements of developing a
business plan for agricultural and other rural businesses such as aquaculture. This class is for those people who
are currently involved with commercial agricultural or other rural business operations or are in the process of
developing a new business of their own.
The course uses the sustainable business planning guide developed by the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable
Agriculture (MISA) which is also co-published with the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education
(SARE) program. This course will assist with meeting the education requirements of the Managerial Ability
portion of the USDA loan General Eligibility Requirements. The course was developed to span the needs of both
traditional rural business owners as well as alternative and sustainable agriculture entrepreneurs. The process used
in the course recognizes that rural people favor a holistic approach to business planning rooted firmly in personal,
family, community, economic and environmental values.
