INTRODUCTION TO GCSE OPTIONS
GCSE choices and tertiary education
The Russell Group is an organisation that represents 24 of the
UK’s leading universities (a list of the member universities can
be seen on www.russellgroup.ac.uk). In December 2013, the
organisation published ‘Informed Choices’, a document that provides
clear guidance on GCSE and A-level requirements for member
universities.
Below are some key points that may be of interest:
• Studying more GCSEs at the expense of getting high grades in a
smaller number is not advantageous.
• Achieving qualifications a year early will not help pupils, if it results
in achieving lower grades.
• At many universities, a grade C in both GCSE English Language
and GCSE Mathematics is an entry requirement.
• Some courses may require a grade B in both GCSE English
Language and Mathematics.
• University College London is the only Russell Group institution that
requires a Modern Foreign Language (at grade C or above) for all of
its courses.
About the curriculum
A central aim of the West London Free School is for pupils to be
successful in between eight and ten academic subjects at GCSE,
providing them with the opportunity to enter the most prestigious
universities and pursue a diverse range of career options.
All pupils will continue to study English Language, English Literature
and Mathematics, with many taking three science GCSEs. A further
four subjects are selected from the three GCSE blocks shown below:
Options evening
Making informed decisions is crucial to the GCSE options process.
On 27 January there will be an options evening where parents can
discuss options with individual subject leaders. This will be followed
by a parents’ evening on 4 February where parents and pupils can
discuss choices further with class teachers. Final option choices will
need to be submitted by 26 February.
