About the course<br />
The <strong>GCSE</strong> English Language course allows pupils to demonstrate<br />
their ability in functional English, to investigate and analyse<br />
language, and to experiment with language and structure creatively<br />
and accurately.<br />
Pupils will be expected to explore a range of fiction and non-fiction<br />
texts, focusing on character development, themes and the authors’<br />
use of language and structure. They will then apply these skills and<br />
knowledge to two papers sat at the end of Year 11.<br />

About the course<br />
The <strong>GCSE</strong> English Literature course allows pupils to experience<br />
a range of literature with a wide variety of appeal drawn from<br />
contemporary and modern texts. Many texts studied have had a<br />
significant influence on our British literary and cultural heritage.<br />
Over the duration of the course pupils will study:<br />
• A 19th-century novel<br />
• A Shakespeare play<br />
ENGLISH LITERATURE<br />
• A modern (post-1914) text<br />
• A range of 15 poems from 1789 to the present day<br />
As well as studying characters, themes and the authors’ craft, pupils<br />
will be expected to have a sound knowledge of the historical contexts<br />
of works and make reference to these in their analyses of the texts.<br />
