The combination of art and fashion started more than 100 years ago, when the belgian artist
of Art Nouveau Henri van de Velde created a dress for his wife, Salvador Dalí with Elsa
Schiaparelli designed suits with pockets like lips and later Sonia Delaunay did colorful prints
on dresses and swimsuits. This combination of art and fashion is continuing until today, for
example John Baldessari did a show in Milan last year.
I grew up in the 80s in the hometown of burda-moden, the european leader in producing
fashion magazines and sewing patterns founded in 1952. The 80s were a time were the borders
of different disciplines were blurred and music, fashion and art were used as a „Gesamtkunstwerk“.
For sure David Bowie but also the berlin designer Claudia Skoda was very famous for her
fashion-shows, like 1979 with the show „big birds“ which was the perfect mix between artists
in the fields of fashion, music, performance, painting.
My work is not so glittering, it is not like the 80s it is even not 3-dimensional. My world is 2D
and my starting point is always myself.
I was thinking about fashion when I observed the people on the streets which look nearly all
the same. Sure, every single one might have some small differences, but generally the style
is similar. I miss the diversity I saw in my youth and I started to sketch new designs. Colorful
and out of form and maybe even not comfortable.
I thought about how we could fit the clothes to the surroundings of our living and included the
designs in photographs I had taken all over the world during the last years following the idea
of todays fashion-photography.
It all looks very playful, but it is more. It is the question of appearance, of identity and also of
Tradition. In my home village, like everywhere in any culture all over the world, there was
some traditional clothes for man and woman, for daily life and celebrations.
Would it be possible and is there some need to wear something like that today, in a new
design, to keep our roots? I don´t know, it is a question for all of us. Why do we dress like we
do, what influence has the environment, architecture and also nature having to us. To work
that out I find humor and the distance of 2D a good start to deal with it.
