Welcome to Woodstock Park from The Club Secretary
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to Woodstock Park.
Our visitors are Walton & Hersham. Welcome to their Players, Officials and Supporters and todays
match officials
Unusually we play Walton & Hersham two times in a week! This is because of the weather
which has caused the postponement of the away fixture a number of times. The two matches
are very important to both sides who are in the wrong half of the table.
Last Tuesday saw us achieving a very satisfactory win against Whyteleafe which gave us our
second double of the season. We played some excellent football in the first half and were soon
2- 0 up. The first goal was fittingly scored by captain for the day, Hicham Akhazzan, who was
playing his 400 th game for the Brickies having been playing for us since 2006. Hicham’s goal
was his 93 rd for the club. After Steven Ita scored a really good third almost straight after the restart
it seemed a matter of how many we would score. However, Whyteleafe had other ideas
and made three substitutions. They then began to get more of the play. After 67 minutes Ryan
hit a great shot from 30 yards that gave Adam Molloy no chance. Just five minutes later the referee
who had an excellent game adjudged that George Crimmen fouled a Whyteleafe player in
the penalty area (seemed rather harsh to me). Adam dived the right way when Sam Clayton
shot and was unlucky not to push the shot round the post and the score had gone from 3-0 to 3
-2. This made the last fifteen minutes quite a tense affair but the Brickies held on for an important
win which put us above East Grinstead Town. This was a match played in a great spirit
from both teamsand as I wrote above, excellently refereed.
Locally Welling United have parted company with their manager Louie Fazakerley and his back
room staff. Dean Frost has been appointed in his place. Welling have done amazingly well to
reach the Vanarama National League. Louie Fazakerley was appointed in March 2015 and
steered them clear of relegation last season. I fear though that they just do not have the resources
to escape this time round. Whitstable Town have been shaken by the resignation of
Gary Johnson as their Chairman. Gary, a Ryman league Director, has had to put up with mindless
abuse from a section of Whitstable supporters who obviously have no idea about the problems
of running a non league club at our level. This will not make it any easier for the Oysterman
to escape relegation, something we would not want to happen to a fellow Kent club. I have
done this job for sixteen years now and I realise how lucky we are with our supporters, as despite
the lows we have sometimes had, do understand how difficult it can be just to keep afloat
and have given us, as a committee, unfailing support.
Enjoy the game!
From the Programme editor
Welcome to Walton & Hersham, a club that I have fond memories of having seen many of
their cup exploits back in the 70’s including their amazing win over Brian Clough’s Brighton at
Brighton. Do read their history further on in this programme.
There have been 3 recent casualties of the local and Ryman football scenes that have surprised
me The first was that the Carshalton boss Matt Howard, who was in charge of them
when they beat us impressively earlier on in the season, according to the club statement
"Had agreed to part company!" The Robins were just above mid table. The second surprise
was that Mark Goldberg has left Bromley. The statement from the club said The board of
Bromley FC have agreed to part company with their manager Mark Goldberg. Club Chairman
Jerry Dolke said, “This is not a decision that has been taken lightly. The Club has new investors
who have higher expectations than current performances on the pitch are showing.”
Goldberg has been the most successful Bromley manager in 30 years!
The final surprise was the resignation of Gary Johnson from Whitstable Town. Mr Johnson
stood down at the club's February board meeting on Monday as a result of ‘personal and offensive’
criticism directed at him by another committee member. I know that Gary has worked
tirelessly for the Oystermen as well as providing financial assistance, but he had been subject
to abuse from some of the supporters who have no inkling what it takes to run a non league
football club at our level. Whitstable Town sit 14 points away from safety at the moment and
the clubs above them have a game in hand so their position is pretty dire at the moment.
Player stats to and including 2nd February 2016
WALTON & HERSHAM— A BRIEF HISTORY
Walton-on-Thames F.C. was formed in 1895, and in
1945, following World War II, amalgamated with Hersham
F.C. to form Walton & Hersham F.C., the present
club.
The united club immediately joined the newly formed
Corinthian League and won the Surrey Senior Cup for the
first time in 1947-48, beating Isthmian League neighbours
Kingstonian 2-1 at Crystal Palace.
Election to the Athenian League soon followed and in
their first season, 1950-51, Swans finished runners-up
and again won the Surrey Senior Cup at Palace, defeating
the much vaunted Dulwich Hamlet 2-1.
Great days, big crowds
These were halcyon days for the Stompond Lane side
and the FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final was reached in successive
seasons, 1951-52 and 1952-53, only for Swans to
go out to Walthamstow Avenue and Harwich &
Parkeston respectively.
During this period the club enjoyed a tremendous following,
and a record crowd of 10,000 were at the Lane in
1952 when the famous Crook Town were the visitors for
an Amateur Cup tie.
Some lean years followed, although the FA Cup First
Round was reached for the first time in 1957-58, Southampton
winning 6-1 before 6,000 people at Stompond
Lane.
Don Stoker’s popular sides of the early 1960’s brought
cup fever back to the Lane and there were fine runs
again in the FA Amateur Cup.
Two late goals by the prolific and popular Brian Jenkins
beat the star-studded Wimbledon side in the Surrey Senior
Cup Final of 1960-61, and the trophy was retained
against Sutton United the following season.
After several years of mid-table respectability the appointment
of Allen Batsford as manager in 1967 heralded
the beginning of the most successful period in the
club’s history. At the end of his first season, a superb
victory over a powerful Wimbledon side in the two legged
Final secured the Premier Midweek Floodlit League
title, the first of three, followed a year later by the winning
of the Athenian League championship for the first
time.
The FA Cup First Round Proper was again reached in the
following two seasons, losing to Barnet 1-0 in 1969-70
and Telford United 5-2 in 1970-71. The runners-up spot
in the League was achieved in both those campaigns and
the Surrey Senior Cup in 1970-71.
Election to the Isthmian ranks followed, with third place
attained in the first season, 1971-72.
Then followed the most memorable season in the club’s
history, 1972-73. The FA Cup First Round barrier was
overcome for the first time with Exeter City being defeated
2-1 amid tremendous excitement at the Lane,
only for visitors Margate to win by the only goal in the
Second Round.
Kingstonian were beaten 2-0 in the Surrey Senior Cup
Final and the runners-up spot achieved in the League.
Then on the 14th of April 1973 the ultimate prize was
gained at Wembley when 41,000 people saw a lastminute
Roger Connell goal against Slough Town bring
the FA Amateur Cup to Stompond Lane, the trophy being
won without a goal being conceded, a record never to be
equaled. Dave Bassett, Willie Smith and Connell also had
the honour of playing for the England Amateur side.
The following season Brian Clough brought his Brighton
& Hove Albion side to Stompond Lane in the FA Cup First
Round, and following a goalless draw, Swans pulled off a
sensational result in the replay at The Goldstone
Ground, a Clive Foskett hat-trick included in a 4-0 win.
Sadly, when Batsford left for Wimbledon the following
season the fine team broke up, the crowds drifted away,
and relegation soon followed in 1975.
The FA Cup First Round was surprisingly reached in 1975
-76, going down 1-0 to Malcolm Allison’s Crystal Palace.
Barren years followed, with the club several times being
close to extinction.
In the mid 1980’s the club was proud to have Sir Stanley
Matthews as President, but only a draw in the final game
of the 1986-87 season prevented relegation to Division
Two.
After 20 years out of the top-flight, Neil Price’s young
side at last gained promotion in 1993-94, and the following
season the Swans went down 2-0 at the Lane in the
first round of the FA Cup. However Swans’ Centenary
celebrations were spoilt by relegation after only two seasons
back in the Premier.
Under the management of Laurie Craker the team ensured
the stay in Division One was as brief as possible,
promotion being gained on the last day of the campaign.
The Swans though struggled to remain in the Premier
Division and at the end of the 1999-2000 season the
Swans were relegated.
Long-serving player Alan Dowson took over as manager
in October.2004 and after defeat in his first match in
charge a 13 match winning sequence ended saw fine
runs in the FA Trophy and League Cup, and promotion as
runners-up in the Ryman League Division One.
The Surrey Senior Cup Final was reached for the first
time in 31 years, the Swans only losing a thrilling game
against AFC Wimbledon 2-1 after extra-time before close
to 4,000 people at Woking.
After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division
a poor start to 2006-07 led to Dowson’s early resignation
and eventual relegation yet again.
Since then Swans have remained in Division One, facing
relegation fights on several occasions.
HOW would you react if your club announced that it was intending to change its name? Not particularly
well, I guess.
But how would you respond as chairman of said club if your local Football League side told you that
you’re not to use the name of the city you both play in, because it’s theirs?
That’s been the dilemma on the south coast in the past few weeks. Nobody is happy, and nobody is getting
anywhere fast.
Whitehawk aren’t exactly popular on the circuit, and they know it. First off, they’re bankrolled. Their fans,
although colourful, loyal and spread important messages, aren’t as great in number as they are in voice.
The money brought in on matchdays just about covers the cost of turning on the floodlights and paying
the officials, not funding a strong National League South squad.
Then there’s the ground. Infamously, the Wealdstone Raider hardly gave it a ringing endorsement. His
“what a s***hole!” bellowing was taking it a bit far, but the Enclosed Ground is somewhat rough around
the edges.
So the owners want to do something about the club’s image, and not just because of ‘that’ video which
went viral all over the world.
A few weeks ago, a name-change order was filed to the FA and Whitehawk were soon to be no more,
born from the start of 2016-17 was New Brighton City FC.
That supporters were not happy, and neither were
Brighton & Hove Albion. So much so that the Championship
club moved to block it with the FA. It could still go
legal.
Within a few days, chairman John Summers relented. A
heart-to-heart with fans on the terraces at Chelmsford
City brought a solid conclusion – the club still needed to
be rebranded to move forward, but the supporters can
pick their new name and it will, if they want it to, include
Whitehawk.
But bad news for the Seagulls…. It’s going to include the
name Brighton as well.
The majority view is that clubs shouldn’t change their
names. History is too important, and it’s tough to argue
against that, even if you aren’t a total traditionalist.
But the Whitehawk story, however it ends, does raise
another interesting subject aside from the obvious question
about if it’s ever right to antagonise your supporters.
Are Brighton right to tell Whitehawk the name of the city
they share cannot – under any circumstances – be
used?
Summers doesn’t think so. “Brighton & Hove Albion, it
seems, believe they own the brand which is frustrating,
but we’re not going away,” he told us.
“They don’t own the city, and they can’t tell us what we
can and cannot do. It’s our city too, and we’re not going
to let them tell us any different. This is our city as well as
theirs.”
Brighton may be biting off more than they can chew. What’s good enough for Manchester, Bristol, and
Sheffield should be good enough for them.
EQUALITY -
“The Ryman Football League strongly support recent FA statement that there should be a
zero tolerance approach against racism and all forms of discrimination. Accordingly any
form of discriminatory abuse whether it be based on race or ethnicity, sexual orientation,
gender, faith, age, ability or any other form of abuse will be reported to The Football Association
for action by that Association.” (Useful numbers:-The FA 0800 085 0508 / Kick it
Match Reports
By Tony Rickson
Some compensation for Sittingbourne, who ended
up well beaten by impressive opponents, was that
none of the five teams below them in Ryman
League South won either.
Momentum is a big deal in football, and Sittingbourne
had lost theirs going into this game after
having their last five matches postponed.
They’d previously only lost once in six games but
all that seemed a long time ago, especially against
an in-form Tooting and Mitcham side who had
played through the rain and frost of the last few
weeks.
Sittingbourne had to make three enforced changes
for this first home match of the New Year with Tom
Brunt and Billy French missing from the defence
and striker Miles Cornwell suspended.
Back came George Crimmen, taking the captain’s
armband as well, and Dan Hughes, while Callum
Naessens stepped up for his full debut after making
an appearance as a substitute earlier in the season
in the match at Whyteleafe. And, after a nervy start,
he did very well at right-back.
Sittingbourne looked understandably rusty to start
with as Tooting stamped their mark on the game,
though when they eventually began to get forward
a few right-wing crosses were whipped in that
came to nothing.
Tooting had the ball in the net midway through the
half but were penalised for a foul and ex-Spurs
youngster O’Neil, who was quite a presence in midfield,
shot wide and then headed wide from two
chances in quick succession.
In fact, Tooting were making full use of midfield
domination, where by playing only one up front
they had a spare man, and Sittingbourne weren’t
getting much of a look-in.
When they did get forward, the referee rejected appeals
that Tooting keeper Cessay had handled outside
his area, and with the keeper still stranded,
Ollie Bankole shot just past the post.
Tooting ended the half dominating possession but
Sittingbourne defended determinedly and when the
visitors did get the ball in the net it was disallowed
for offside.
Sittingbourne worked hard throughout the second
half but, despite the efforts of the again-impressive
youngster Josh Wisson in midfield, they weren’t
clinical enough with some of their passing. And
Tooting made them pay dearly for it.
The second half was only three minutes old when
they took the lead, a clearance from halfway
bouncing through the middle of the Sittingbourne
defence for Baxter to nip in and lob cleverly over
the advancing Adam Molloy.
Chances for Sittingbourne were few and far between
and Tooting made it 2-0 just after the hour
when Molloy did well to block Baxter’s shot but was
powerless to prevent Makofo scoring from the
loose ball.
Substitutions didn’t really give Sittingbourne much
more attacking impetus and they ended up second
best as Tooting got a third near the end when sub
Price took on the defence and squared for Wilson
to score with a low shot.
3-0 equalled Sittingbourne’s second heaviest defeat
of the season, and was the fourth game in a
row against Tooting & Mitcham, whose league position
always seems less than it should be, in which
they’ve failed to score.
It also ended a little run of home successes, and
now that the season’s back up and running again
Sittingbourne need to get this out of their system
and get back to where they were a few weeks ago.
Our core business is to provide cost management services
to the construction industry. Our client base includes
subcontractors, contractors, corporates, private
businesses and public sector organisations. We adopt
industry accepted approaches to cost management/
procurement. We apply these diligently and conscientiously
to each project.
Our staff regularly undertake CPD training and university
studies in order to keep abreast of developments
in the industry. In addition to our collective experience
and expertise, Our software systems enable us to deliver
efficient services to our clients. We are also currently
looking at ways in which we can further benefit
our clients using Building Information Model [BIM].
Many of QS Consults’ clients are already involved in the construction industry with
our services complementing their own. By way of example with public sector clients
we can prepare cost studies (including market testing) to enable them to make
more informed decisions regarding proposed projects and estates strategies.
On the other hand for contractors and sub-contractor’s we provide estimating and
tendering services allowing them to focus on their core business of delivering construction
projects. Just some of our projects are shown below:
Some clients we work with may have never been involved in construction before
and may be considering a one-off construction project. As quantity surveyors we
can provide guidance on managing costs and how to minimise costs risks associated
with construction projects. Some clients we work with may have never been involved
Quarter Final
Sittingbourne 2 Corinthian-Casuals 1
Att 70
players and this is certainly the best Casuals
side that I have seen for many a season so it
was an ominous start. But Sittingbourne steadied
the ship and Molloy was rarely troubled..but
nor was Danny Bracken in the Casuals goal in
that half.
This game had been postponed twice before
but it was well worth waiting for!
Sittingbourne were without cup tied players
Stephen Ita, Jordan Wells, Kerry Kedze and
new signings Josh Algar and Scott Wibley,
whilst Miles Cornwell was serving the second of
his 3 match ban..a ban that must seem never
ending for the player with the Brickies having
had so many games lost due to the weather.
Billy French was injured, and captain Tom
Brunt was unavailable. A total of 4 of our under
21's side featured in this match.
These changes meant that Dan Hughes started
a match for only the second time, and he took
his opportunity brilliantly scoring the two Sittingbourne
goals. Also in came Callum Naessens
making his 2nd start and Adam Williams
returned from his loan spell. New signing Andy
Irvine, who was so instrumental a few years
ago in Tunbridge Wells vase run, Connor Wilkins,
and 16 year old Jake Embury from the under
21’s were on the bench. Jono Richardson
was starting for the 100th time for Sittingbourne.
The weather was atrocious with a strong swirling
wind and driving but light rain which
strangely didn’t seem to soak too much. The
Brickies supporters in the 70 crowd though didn’t
worry too much, especially in the second
half when the Brickies came back from a half
time goal deficit.
Casuals started brightly, possible encouraged
by the fact that they had already done the double
over the Brickies in the league. The wind
seemed to be favouring Casuals in the first half
and perhaps they should have made more of
an advantage of it. It was no real surprise when
in the 33rd minute Stef Joseph mad a good run
on the right, cut inside and sent a low shot past
Adam Molloy in the Brickies goal to put Casuals
a goal to the good. Casuals have some tricky
Casuals had the first good effort of the new half
on 56 minutes forcing Molloy to tip a dangerous
effort over the bar, the wind though was now in
Sittingbourne’s favour and unlike in a few
matches where they had spurned
that advantage they were using it well.
Casuals needed a second, but it was a different
Sittingbourne in this half and on 66 minutes
substitute Irvine was fouled. Hicham
Akhazzan’s free kick was turned over for a corner
and from the corner the ball was
cleared..but only as far as Hughes who crashed
his first time shot into the net for the equaliser.
The jubilation of the Sittingbourne supporters
was almost cut short immediately when almost
straight from the restart the visitors had a
golden opportunity to retake the lead but the
shot went wide. That was a wake up call and
after that the Brickies never looked back.
Akhazzan had a shot well saved on 73 minutes
and 4 minutes later Josh Wisson ended a
strong run on the right with a cross into the box
where Hughes was on hand to rise majestically
and powerfully head home goal number 2.
Akhazzan was a real danger to Casuals and
with ten minutes to go he appeared to be bundled
down in the area but calls for a penalty
went unheeded.
Sittingbourne were now comfortably on top and
they easily held out for the 4 minutes added
time to celebrate a famous victory and now go
on to an all Swale semi final tie away to Faversham
Town.
Sittingbourne: Molloy, Naessens (Irvine 61
mins), Lee, Steventon, Crimmen, Richardson,
Wright, Wisson, Williams (Embury 81 mins),
Hughes, Akhazzan
