Dear Turbo Expo 2011 Participants: On behalf of the IGTI Board, our Chairman, Dr. Ron Bunker, and the entire IGTI staff, I would like to welcome you to ASME Turbo Expo 2011 in Vancouver. As the most important global challenges today come from ever increasing energy demands and greater mobility driven by globalization and the development of new economies, the fast development of turbomachinery technology and turbomachinery cycles for all available energy sources is becoming an increasingly important mission of science and engineering. Turbo Expo, being the world’s premier gathering of turbomachinery professionals, is at the very heart of this challenge. Indeed, this year’s meeting will be the largest ever in North America with over 3,000 participants. We hope this event will meet or even exceed your expectations by providing the very best technical content and be a forum for you to interact with your colleagues, to learn from each other and to further improve turbomachinery technology. Please join us at the grand opening that features IGTI’s annual awards program and the Turbo Expo keynote session. Leading turbomachinery professionals will be honored with the ASME R. Tom Sawyer Award, the ASME Gas Turbine Award and the IGTI Industrial Gas Turbine Technology Award for their outstanding achievements in turbomachinery related science and technology. This year’s conference theme is “Clean & Efficient Turbomachinery Technologies for Future Low Carbon Economies.” To address this important and topical issue, three knowledgeable world-class industry executives will provide their perspectives on how to ensure that our research and development efforts actually meet future requirements for aero engines and power systems. Keynote addresses will be delivered by Walter DiBartolomeo, Vice President of Engineering, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Roland Fischer, CEO of Business Unit Products - Fossil Power Generation, Siemens Energy and Gary Mercer, Senior Executive of Engineering, GE Energy. All Technical Conference participants will have the opportunity to attend over 280 technical sessions in 38 simultaneous tracks. There will be nearly 1,000 technical papers presented and participants will have the opportunity to put questions to the speakers. Although the majority of the papers are focused on gas turbines the number of papers on steam turbines, fans and blowers, wind turbines and solar cycles has also increased: in line with the IGTI+ strategy of embracing papers on all kinds of turbomachinery. In addition there will be 43 sessions featuring panel discussions, lectures, and tutorials by leading industrial and academic experts. We will have a premier threeday exposition with more than 100 exhibitors. This marketplace, where research meets application, will offer a unique opportunity to assess new products, proven methods and innovative ideas. There will be something for everybody. On behalf of IGTI, I thank the companies that are contributing to the success of Turbo Expo 2011 through sponsorship. I would also like to thank all the volunteers who contributed so much effort to make Turbo Expo a vibrant exchange of advanced turbomachinery technology. This year’s event is made possible through the voluntary contributions of over 4,000 of your colleagues. Turbo Expo would not be the premier gas turbine conference that we all benefit from without the labor of so many authors, reviewers, session organizers, point contacts, vanguard chairs, committee leadership, and all others who volunteered and served. Finally, I extend my sincere gratitude to this year’s review chair, Karen Thole, and the co-review chair, Seung Jin Song, who both did stellar work in keeping the review process up to the highest scientific standards. Thank you all for coming to Turbo Expo. We trust that your time in Vancouver will be both enjoyable and professionally rewarding. Thomas Sattelmayer Chair of Conferences | ASME Turbo Expo 2011 Member, IGTI Board Welcome to Turbo Expo 2011! Dear Turbo Expo 2011 Attendees: On behalf of the Local Liaison Committee (LLC) and the region’s turbomachinery community, I would like to welcome you to Vancouver, Canada, for the ASME Turbo Expo 2011. Situated on Canada’s Pacific Coast, metropolitan Vancouver is the largest city in Western Canada and third largest in the country. Vancouver is also home to one of the busiest ports in North America and Canada’s leading industrial centres including high-tech, tourism, forest products, trade and financial services, and, of course, aerospace. Ranked 5th in the world, the Canadian aerospace industry overall generates in excess of $23 billion in annual revenues. Aerospace markets served in British Columbia include aircraft repair and manufacturing; repair and overhaul of small gas turbine engines; and aircraft component design, and manufacture. While there is no aircraft engine manufacturing in British Columbia, Pratt & Whitney Canada has a manufacturing plant in Lethbridge, in the neigbouring province of Alberta, which employs 250 people to assemble and test PT6 engines. In addition, the industry here is supported by the aerospace training centres at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) as well as three universities. Western Canada is also the energy hub of the country with leading energy companies including TransCanada Corporation. The TransCanada network of more than 60,000 kilometres of pipeline taps into virtually all major gas supply basins in North America. TransCanada also owns, controls or is developing approximately 10,800 megawatts (MW) of power generation including 590MW in wind power. Of particular interest in the evolution of our industry is wind power as the fastest growing source of electricity globally and here in Canada. Currently in Alberta alone, there are over 540MW connected to the power grid and approximately 70 wind development projects that will enable the production of up to 12,000MW annually. With this bit of information on western Canada’s major energy hub and Vancouver’s growing aerospace cluster in hand, it is my hope that you will enjoy the excellent program line up at Turbo Expo 2011 and find your stay in Vancouver full of stimulating discussions on the role of gas turbine technology in our planet’s future sustainable development challenges. I think the importance of sustainable development really comes to the forefront in a place like Vancouver, which illustrates the necessity of finding the balance between the urbanized and natural worlds so well. Consistently rated in the top three of the world’s most liveable cities, Vancouver is most famous for its beautiful natural settings and its more than 190 parks. There are also worldclass restaurants, art galleries, museums and an aquarium on offer. And these are just some of the reasons Vancouver plays host to many interesting and exciting events, including the 21st Winter Olympics just last year. On this occasion of the ASME Turbo Expo 2011, I wish you all a pleasant, productive and rewarding visit to Vancouver.
