Yeah, February..
As people say, the first step is the hardest. CreativeMedia team
has made it through the first issue, and is now prepared to go
into a full-on sprint. So, when I started planning this issue,
I predicted that we would do just another Valentine’s Day
mainstream contents: love stories, chocolate recipes, romantic
dinner ideas and so on.
Sometimes, Valentine’s Day narrows down the definition of love
into a one tiny square—Romance. It makes non-romantic love
relationships seem inferior. However, my amazing team came
together to offer a very different take on the meaning of love.
Love is a universal thing; more than just those teddy bears,
red roses, and cards. Love is more than that; it could be love
for family, passion, country, and even yourself. In that sense, the
theme for our second issue is “Universal Love”. In this issue, our
team launches warming contents to give you a head start on a
broader definition of love.
Photographer Interview:
Cecep Reza
Interviewed and written by Aisyah Nabila and Fransiska Adeline
Cohort. issue 2
Cecep Reza--apart from being Indonesian TV-series actor, is now working in
photography and creative field. He has been working for quite some time in
wedding photography. It was really fun and insightful interview, he is really
friendly, humorous and humble person to talk with. We were talking from A-Z
about his passion, photography tips and how he captures wedding pictures that
is full-of-love atmosphere; read about what he has to say about all of that!
PHOTOGRAPHY MPTV
As we know, you were in acting a
lot. What or who got you started in
photography?
Being in the frame and behind the camera
are actually related, especially in
the terms of visual creativity. Honestly, I
am really interested to become a movie
director, and learning photography was
to serve this purpose. A director should
have a vision on how to capture good
scenes with the best angles.
How did you begin? Did you pursue
any kind of formal education for
photography?
No, I didn’t pursue any formal photography
education. I just started right away out
of my interest.
Do you identify photography as part
of yourself something you really
love, or is it just something you enjoy
doing?
Well, it was budding from hobby. Then, I
joined DeviantArt, I met my fellow Indonesian
photographers and got even more
interested in photography. It’s not a main
thing in my life; it’s more like my hobby
fused and combined with work. So, it can
be said as something that I enjoy doing
and part of what I am doing, which makes
It a part of myself.
How long have you been a
photographer?
The interest started in 2007, while I was
still an actor.
PHOTOGRAPHY MPTV
PHOTOGRAPHY
Which one is easier: photographing
wedding or unspecified style of
photograph?
As a photographer, there are a lot of tools,
gears, and equipment to be bought, and one
of the ways to save enough money to buy
them is by doing side gigs as a wedding photographer.
What kind of things do you like to
photograph?
I like both of inanimate and animate objects, but
for me it is actually easier to photograph people.
People have expressions and emotions. Thus, it
is easier to be captured. Inanimate objects are
harder because we cannot tell them what to do.
Capturing beautiful results from inanimate objects
depends more on our skills.
What photography technique that you often
use, and why? How does it define your
photography style?
Hmm… There is no specific technique that I use
more often than the others. In terms of style, I
like black & white kind of style, and also a combination
of colors currently popular to Instagram
community. I focused more on the mood of the
photos when taking pictures. I think my pictures
mostly have some kind of soft-peaceful mood;
not too hard on the eyes.
If you identify photography as part of
yourself, what do you usually do to translate
your passion into the pictures that
people would know from the pictures that
you are really into doing it?
It has to do with sense and taste. I met this senior
photographer, and he told me our sensitivity
should be there when we are taking pictures. It
is when your interest to freeze your object of interest
into photographs combined with common
photography theories. The tip is before you go
out and bring your camera with you, you have
to know what kind of thing you want photograph
on that day.
6

Cohort. issue 2
What camera do you enjoy using?
I am definitely a ‘canonian’
For you, what is wedding photography?
A job or a hobby?
Hmmm… Actually, it’s a little bit difficult if you
have a hobby that goes into a job. Everything
will be mixed; the hobby blends with the job. So
when I do a job, I will feel tired and else, but also
happy, because it’s also my hobby.
When capturing wedding photos, are
there any specialties and specificities required
to get great results? How do you
take in that romantic atmosphere and
people’s emotions at a particular time?
The most important thing is actually the story itself.
We have to be able to tell a story to people
through our photographs. For example, if you
want to capture the wedding rings, you cannot
just take a picture of them only, you must have
a story related to the couple or to the theme of
the wedding.
PHOTOGRAPHY MPTV
What makes better photo: a moment that
comes naturally or staged?
It’s almost always the natural one.
Is it easier to take pictures or video?
For now I enjoy taking pictures. Making videos
needs a lot of preparation, needs a lot of equipment.
But anyway, I also like making videos.
When talking about the final results of
the photos, how dependent should we be
on the editing processes?
For the composition, it’s from the camera and
the way we take pictures. For colors, it can be
enhanced by camera filters and editing. Most
importantly though, the picture has to be well
composed and well taken from the beginning to
be able to follow the theme of the object of the
photos when editing.
When you don’t have any photography
project, do you often go around and take
pictures?
If I don’t have any job around, I usually get
asked to join some projects. For going around
and taking pictures, hmm… Maybe next time if
it’s possible, I want to go somewhere by train
and try to take photos. But for now, I don’t really
have much time to do that.
7

Cohort. issue 2
PHOTOGRAPHY MPTV
PHOTOGRAPHY
Do you also taking and editing
videos?
Sometimes I make videos for weddings, but
I more often do them for personal Interests
such as extreme games, skateboarding,
and cars.
If you are going out, do you always
take your camera with you? What
kind of pictures that you will take?
I used to bring my SLR camera everywhere.
Now, if there’s no specific event or moment,
I only bring my smartphone.
What tips do you have for people
beginning to get into photography?
Tutorial videos and communities definitely
help a lot in getting more familiar with photography.
By joining communities, we can
share different ideas from many creative
people with the same interest as we have.
Formal education for photography offers
slower pace in learning, so I think joining
community is better.
5 fun facts about
Cecep Reza
1. He can’t drive a motorbike.
2. He always need hot water for
shower.
3. He likes action movie.
4. He wants to take pictures in
a battlefield which he thinks it’s
super awesome.
5. He wants to make movies before
he is 30
Any suggestion for a community we
can get into and take part in?
I used to take part in DevianArt, but for
now it’s more likely to be Instagram.
There are bigger communities for Instagram
in Indonesia now, and that might be
due to its simplicity and ease in capturing
and sharing.
Story
of Loving
Concept by Laurentius Nico
In this month of love, people
mostly think about their lover.
We would usually see people
giving out roses, chocolates,
and gifts for their girlfriend
or boyfriend. In short,
people trying the best to
show their affection towards
their couple in this month.
However, this little story of
Christian gives us a different,
yet very important point of
view of loving. The one that,
unfortunately, is still forgotten
Here it is, Hawkeye Huey! He is an adorable six-year-old NatGeo
photographer, I discovered him about a year ago on the Instagram. Hawkeye
is the son of a professional NatGeo photographer--Aaron Huey.
A little story about him, at the age of four, Hawkeye and his father travelled
across the West part of America and stayed at locales like Monument Valley
and Joshua Trees. During the trip, he took photos of things that he found
interesting with his Fuji Instax 210. Surely, we’re all going to think that it’s not
even a big deal, a four-years-old kid taking photos with his instant camera, I
mean.. Hey, everybody can do it right? Yes, but wait until you see his results.
He subsequently got lots of attention from virtual world, made him gained
nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram and was featured in Rolling Stone’s
Top 100 on Instagram. What I love about this wonder kid and his special talent
is that he has his own unique and charming vision or perspective, because he
is three-feet off the ground, “It’s an angle no one ever sees,” Aaron said. For
PHOTOGRAPHY MPTV
In celebration of the month of love, this series of pictures wants to take you to a little
deeper thought of what universal love is. Often times we get stuck to the much romanticized
idea of love; unaware that love is actually not that limited to that. Being in
love can happen in many forms, it has no limits and boundaries. Things that we like
to do, that puts a smile on our face every time we wake up; people that make us feel
comfortable in our own skin; things that we are so passionate about that make us wear
our hearts on our sleeves; a smell of nature and forest that make us warm, they all
collectively teach us how to love.
To love without judgment, to simply share some happiness, to be disciplined, to keep
up the promises, and to listen closely to things and people we care about. Love is one
of the simplest things that it is so easy to be invited and be part of. Yet as simple as it
can be, the simplicity is often indescribable; even Einstein said: gravity won’t be held
responsible for people falling in love. Through these pictures, we want to share that
we do not only fall in love with our significant others, but we fall in love with what we
love to do and what nurtures our creativity. We love those moments we enjoy with our
family, the sound of music that soothes us, the cute animal bestfriend and, oh, how we
love those comforting hugs from closest friends!
Valentine’s
READING
LIST
Written by Aisyah Nabila
This issue is sure to be so full of love, but I guess it will not be complete without
some list of books about love. Personally, I am not a die-hard fan of romanticism
and even tend to avoid cheesy story about love but I found these books worth
reading and unique whereas it pushes out the rigidly defined theory about love. So
here is your February reading list books!
1
Whutering Heights
by Emily Bronte
“He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made
of, his and mine are the same.”
This is probably a really great love-themed classic book
and known as one of the greatest fiction ever written. The
story is focused between Catherine and Heathcliff with focal
story about obsession instead of romantic love. Surrounded
by unlikeable-screwed up main characters, complex
and chaotic atmosphere in almost every pages; this
can definitely defined as a dark novel. However, this story
reciprocates the riffles effect of non-existent of love and
wrong rendition of understanding it. Fortunately, the end
part is wrapped with the possibility of peace and happiness.
2
Everyday
by David Levithan
“Kindness connects to who you are, while niceness connects
to how you want to be seen.” … “What is it about the moment
you fall in love? How can such a small measure of time
contain such enormity?”
This book is about A who wakes up every morning with different
body and different life. With such hardline A knows
he can’t mess up people’s lives in which he inhibits and he
knows well he shouldn’t get attached with whatever life he
wakes up to everyday. But he comes to question everything
when he falls in love with Rhiannon. As cheesy as it might
sounds, this is a charming story about people. Setting aside
the romance love part, the author goes a bit deeper about
universal love and humans without failing to discuss about
the morals. Through A, we get to see different kinds of people,
wandering about their minds, and lets the readers relate
to lots of different people’s feeling--which kind of charming.
Totto-Chan
by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi
“But Yasuaki-chan trusted Totto-chan completely. And Totto-chan
was risking her life for him. With her tiny hands clutching
his, she pulled with all her might. From time to rime a large
cloud would mercifully protect them from the blistering sun.”
This book is my childhood favorite. Although the story is not explicitly
laid out as to adopt love theme, you will find yourself smiling of happiness
because there’s simplicity of love laid in it. Totto-chan is written
memoir by the author of the name Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. Set before and
during the world war II, the story is about a girl named Totto-chan who is
a highly curious girl and labelled as trouble-maker and said to does not
met the standard to study in common school and was forced to leave
the school. Her mother then brought her to Tomoe Gakuen--a school
which used railroad car as their classes. There she met Sosaku Kobayashi,
a principle and an educator who truly believes in freedom, love
and fun in running the school system. Totto-chan is engaged in memorable
school-ing journey where she is allowed to be herself and doing
the learning in her own way. every students in class are allowed to
learn anything they want even when it means tinkering around with toys!
She also learned to treat everyone with compassion, no matter how
weird one might be. Because no one person is the same with the other.
The Forty Rules of Love
by Elif Shafak
“Every true love and friendship is a story of unexpected transformation.
If we are the same person before and after we loved, that means
we haven’t loved enough”
This book is so excessively beautiful, be it from the characters wise, Plot
wise, and the forty-rules of love in it. In my opinion, there are not so many
books these days, as original as this one. Despite integrating history and
religious belief, it is still able to contain both exciting and alluring story
as well as going in depth into concept of love. The Forty Rules of Love
consist of two narratives told alternatingly; one contemporary, about
Ella who reviewed the book title Sweet Blasphemy and the other set in
13th-century about Rumi and his companion Shams on the quest of defining
forty rules of love (which is what Sweet Blasphemy about). Personally,
I found the narrative about ella is empty and only serve as the approach
to introduce Sweet Blasphemy as the main story. Elif Shafak is however
really creative and purely brilliant on writing the second narrative by using
so many perspectives from all the characters in The Sweet Blasphemy.
Shams of Thabriz, is such a strong and vivid character, he is bold,
brilliant and soft but also shown as imperfect at the same time. The core
story is about love, but not like any-other love-themed story. It speaks
in depth about more widened concept of love, asking us to undo everything
we know about love and to redefine it in more wise perspective.
The Wedding Girl
by Madeleine Wickham
“Knowing a person isn’t like knowing a string of facts. It’s
more like...a feeling.”
If you want to go with something light but still need twist and turn;
the wedding girl is a good chick-lit to read. The author of this
book is madeline wickham which is a pseudonym of sophie kinsela--
sophaholic series. As madeline wickham I can say she is a
bit witty and more serious than sophie kinsela. The Wedding girl
is told in third person and with different point of views (this kind of
writing is really gripping, because we aren’t left super clueless).
It’s centered on Millie who is about to have grandiose wedding
with Simon-- the only son of multimillionaire in Bath, England.
A secret revealed in the first page of the book making everything
upside-down. Although I don’t agree with several things
in the book, it is still an okay to read for something fun and silly.
THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES
by Sue Monk Kidd
Written by Rissa
The Secret Life of Bees is a story about a 14 year-old
girl Lily, who lived with an abusive father and an
African-American nanny. Her journey involved with
seeking the truth about her mother and discovering
about her true self. Set in the American South
1960’s, where intense racism and Civil Rights Act were
on the rise, Lily and her caretaker fleeing from her
abusive father, T-ray, in heading to a place where her
mother could possibly have visited in the past. This
book takes you to her life and the challenges she has
faced growing up, who sees people for who they truly
are, and not based on the color of their skin. In this
book, Sue Monk Kidd’s have successfully revealed
how love can transform our lives to a whole new level.
Later, when three African-American beekeeping
sisters took her in, her life changed. She encounters
the life she has never imagined she would experience.
It is there, surrounded by the strength
of the African-American Virgin Mary, the hum of
bees, and a circle of wise and cheerful women, that
Lily makes her passage to wholeness of new life.
LITERATURE
This book is good for anyone, both young and old. By
addressing the conflict of betrayal, wounds of loss, and
absence of love, the author has successfully demonstrate
the power of women come together to heal
those wounds, how we can create our own sanctuary
of true family and home, and to become a mother to
each other and themselves. All the elements covered in
this book have come up together and make up a good
character development. This book makes you think
about the hardships what black men and women have
gone through in the past to get the rights to vote and
be free. It also might touches to many of those who
still face the abusive life up until now, and it shows
that people of any race, can open not only their homes,
but their hearts too. Most importantly, this book focuses
on the pressure of being a teen and what it takes
to stand for what you believe in. I found this book is
very enjoyable to read, of course with a lot mixed feelings
of laughter and sorrow, and I think you will too!
Have you spent your
Valentines the right way?
Written by Jason Taslim
36

Cohort. issue 2
Valentines
is a day where we cherish loved
ones, in specific boyfriend, girlfriend, and partner or
maybe crush – giving gi:s to symbolize love to them.
Most people find this sweet as love, in general, is a
feeling which others can’t physically see. People will
try to materialize love towards someone they love by
the means of objects such as flowers.
Each ValenDne’s everyone worries about who or what
to give and someDmes they forget about themselves,
but this ValenDne’s should be different. There are a lot
of people in this world right now who aren’t happy
with who they are; either with their looks or with their
talents.
This is for anyone upset about their weight, this
ValenDne’s go treat yourself to a cheat day. For every
moment of the day you have been worrying about
calorie intake, fat content and carbs; remember that
there is always a tomorrow; eat what you want. Being
slimmer doesn’t make you a beKer person!
This is for anyone upset about their appearances; this
ValenDne’s try to appreciate yourself. Remember that
looks are not everything. Try to appreciate yourself
more by giving credits to your other talents; maybe
you can sing, dance or you haven’t explored yourself
enough to find your hidden talents.
This is for anyone upset about their talents: this
ValenDne’s try to cut yourself some slacks. If you have
been pracDcing and seem to never be perfect, just
stop for a moment and see your journey from the
beginning; you can see that you have experience
struggles and with that you have become a beKer
person.
This is for anyone who thinks they are forever alone:
never stop believing. It’s not your weight that repels
the guys away and definitely not the height that repels
the gals away. If someone truly loves you, they will
definitely love you for ‘you’. Finding people who
encourage you to be yourself really boosts selfesteem.
Maybe it’s not Dme yet. Besides, being single
saves you from all the heartbreaks. This ValenDne’s
buy yourself some chocolates and use the Dme to
appreciate your family or friends that have always
stayed true to you.
Loving yourself is definitely harder than loving others.
But, how can you ever truly love someone else if you
haven’t given a chance to yourself. Never stop
believing because for all we know your prince
charming is in the other side of the door that you have
never opened before.
PS: If you read this and ValenDne’s has passed, don’t
wait for the next valenDnes; don’t ever wait another
day just to love yourself.
“Love yourself. Forgive yourself. Be true to yourself.
How you treat yourself sets the standard for how
others will treat you.”
Love
It’s an unfathomable feeling that every person craves to find
That amazing feeling will bewitch the mind
It makes your eyes go hazy
It can make you carefree and lazy
It can make you or break you
It can make you happy or blue
Giddy, like you’re on top of the world
Looking for that feeling every day of the week
Love is an unfathomable feeling
Something that leaves one’s heart reeling or aching
A special kiss, hug or smile
A kind word that goes the extra mile
A beautiful voice on the end of the line
It’s wonderful to know love is so divine
Soaring up and down on the wings of a dove
That’s the unfathomable feeling of love
THE LETTER
Written by Miftaahul Jannah
Her name is America, America
Goth. She was a decent, beautiful,
and God knows she was a clever
girl. Everybody was in love with her.
Even the butterflies had a crush on her.
It was shocking for everyone when a policeman
found her without soul in the park near
Elba River. I told myself not to freak out.
I didn’t know that America was missing
for three days; she was different, she
might disappear for days and come back
like nothing happened. It was because
of her obsession with nature and things
I never thought that she would die
in pain. Not even any further of it.
Her parents standing there under
the dark cloud of sadness. They still
have those smiles, but we all know
what do they really feel; their one and
only daughter was horribly killed.
The sun is so bright this morning; gives
the impression that God welcomed her in
heaven. I am looking at her face in the black
light and legit coffin. She is really beautiful,
with her black hair falling towards her
white gown, and her make up looked so natural
yet it gave her the expression of peace
***.
Time goes really fast after the funeral,
but there is no light that could lead the
America’s case to a relieving end. Almost
a month and we got nothing on it.
I decided to help the police on my own.
I watched enough criminal TV series; I
think I am able to do it. I do really need
to find the truth behind of her murder.
Later that afternoon, my eyes are looking
farther through the window. I am
trying to remember everything about
her. Her obsession, her laugh, and her
daily activities that kind of made me
think that she was crazy. Also, our secrets
that we shared together happy and sad.
Secret.
Oh yeah, I remember something.
The library was her second home. We had
a join-locker to put our belongings together.
Since I was too busy, I never checked
that locker for God knows how long. Then
I looked into her belongings, and I found
something strange about it. I never told
anyone about this because it is our secret.
Even the police didn’t know about it.
LITERATURE
Well, a bunch of letter bundled in a box
written “America’s Treasure”. I picked the
first letter with the white envelope and
there was this little red dot, I am sure it is
blood. I read it and my heart skipped a beat.
I didn’t know where it came from,
but I am a hundred percent sure that this
letter has an important role to her death. I
put them in my bag and went straight to the
police office to tell them what I have found.
***
It is 3:00 pm, raining outside. My body is
shaking knowing the truth that the letter
is in my bag. I never knew that she was
hiding it from anyone. The Letter. Finally,
I stepped up in front of the police station.
I told them that I have an urgency to meet
with Detective Fosner. The policeman behind
the desk told me to wait. Not long after,
I told Detective Fosner about the letter.
I handed him the letter. I looked at his face,
masculine with an expression of a gentleman.
He was really kind; even he comforted
me when I heard the news about America.
I observed his expression when he is
reading the letter. For the next seconds, he
asked me if I told anyone about it before.
“No, Sir. Right after I found this, I went
straight here and no one else know about
it.” He looked me in the eyes; he knows
that I am still in the shock stage.
“Anything else that you want to tell
to me?” He raised his eyebrows.
“Sir, I don’t know if it is related to this
case or not, but I have a feeling that somebody
was stalking America and I for a couple
weeks. Then, I received a letter stated
that I need to stay away from America.”
“Do you still have that letter?”
“I thought that it was just a prank. You know..
I have a boyfriend. So, I don’t mind the letter
that much.”
Detective Fosner decided to walk me
home and asked me to find the letter in
my room. Surprisingly, I found the letter
in the drawer. I handed it to him and he
told me not to tell anyone about this and
keep it to myself from anyone until the
police found the suspect. Detective Fosner
also told me to keep him updated if
something happened to me. I nodded and
he left.
***
One week later, I still haven’t heard anything
about America’s case. As I walked
back home, I stopped at the coffee shop
to buy the espresso coffee and brownie
cake. Suddenly, I saw Alex from a distance.
He looked surprised as I waved, so I approached
him. America, Alex and I used to
have our quality time together back then.
As the time goes by, we talked about the
glorious time. I knew that Alex had a big
crush on America, but I did nothing for
them because America loved Stanley, her
first love. We laughed a lot talking about
how funny America was with her trademark
hippy style. For goodness sake, I miss
her. Tears started running through my eyes
“Something wrong?”
“Nothing, I miss her. I want the killer get her/
his punishment right away.”
“Hmm, do you want to accompany me to go
to her favorite store?”
I nodded and wiped my eyes. Then Alex and
I walked to the old bookstore that America
loved. The bookstore was in the downside
of the city. This store was unique yet
strange. The silent and the cold scare me
I feel something different from
Alex as we walked through the alley.
I pulled my phone and told Simon
that I was with Alex at a bookstore
to distract myself from the paranoia..
Then, the world becomes darker.
And darker,
And darker,
Darker,
Until the dark ate me up.
***
Suddenly, I woke up in the middle of a
stinky and dirty room. So dark. I got tied up
in a chair. My head is spinning. I screamed
for thousand times. No answer. I cried
and shouted for help. This is the moment
when I realized what about to happen.
Now, I could not feel my body. I feel numb.
Before, I prayed to God to save me. Now, I
pray to God to take me to heaven in the speed
of the light without the feeling of pain or
hurt. My eyes are running out of reservoir.
I just want this to end, or at least, my life.
I heard footsteps coming closer. Again,
I shouted, no answer. I am so frustrated
until his husky voice awakened me. “Why
did you do this to me?” I yelled, I could
not see his face, but I knew who was he.
“Because you did not follow my order,
because of you she is killed.”
I was not scared anymore. I
was just wanted it to be over.
“You what? Order? Oh my god, you are insane!”
I spitted. I don’t know where is he,
but I just feel like I needed to do that. Hoping
that my saliva landed right on his face.
“SHHH, I told you to stay away from her!
You were bad influence for her! You do know
how much I loved her. How much I want her
to be mine. She said that you told her not to
fall in love with best friends. She said that
you are everything to her and so am I. But
I know it was just another small talks. You
screwed it up. “. “Gosh, Alex. You are a mess!”
“No, you are the real mess. You told me that
I needed to be punished, the one to blame is
you and America. You both ruined my life.
You screwed it as if you are God that knows
everything. America was my savior. She took
me from my deepest nightmare. No one ever
could do that, but you changed her.”
“Alex. Listen to me, we love you. You are like
our brother. You are the one that screwed it up,
I lost my words. I trusted you.. For God sake..
I—“
He slapped me. It hurts so badly.
Tears start running in my face. I can
tell that he is smiling, he is happy.
“That’s what you got when you did something
wrong to me. Now, I will take
you to your what-so-called heaven. The
pain will erase your sins and you will
go to heaven to meet your best friend.”
He touches my skin, my neck, my hand,
and my body. After that, I can feel that
he is injecting something to my neck. I
can feel the unknown substance blends
in my blood. I got this strange feeling
that my body is on fire. Then I see the
light. The light that gives me hopes. I
heard the birds are singing and I see
a place full of trees. I can feel the wind,
the sun and everything beneath it.
“Injection..”
“I’m going to heaven.”
***
I heard voices of people that I love—mom’s
crying broke every piece of me, voice of my
dad telling me that everything’s going to be
alright, voice of my cutie little niece Kyla
keeps telling me to wake up to play with her.
ART
INTERVIEW
WITH BARSENA
Interviewed by Ananda Ambarsari and Siti Aisyah
How would you describe your music to those
unfamiliar with your work?
I would describe my music as romantic, reflecting the
real love for my passion which basically represents
myself. Actually, one of the things I find necessary in
creating my music is the honesty towards ourselves,
where we can get into the state of comfort while doing
so. In conclusion, when people listen to my music,
they will hear who I truly am as Barsena Bestandhi.
If you had to describe your music in three
or four words, what would you call it?
Romantic. Honest. Lively.
Thinking back to early childhood, what was
your first experience with music like? What
song did you remember most as a child?
When I was little, I really hated singing that sometimes
my parents forced me to go on stage and sing.
Back in the days, when it came to music, I thought
of piano. Until one day—Independence Day celebration
in my housing residence, I was forced to
sing Sherina’s song titled “Dua Ballerina”. It was
really funny since the song was supposed to be
all cheerful, but I was singing it in a stiff manner.
ART
What are your immediate music
career goals?
Every musician’s goal is actually to
have creation. Same thing as me, I
would like to record an album. For
now, I want to be a well-known musician
first then i would like to do
music behind the scene; I am really
passionate in creating music
and writing songs. I have a dream
to hold a concert where my fellow
singers will be singing my songs.
Everyone loves a celebrity,
so what advice do you have
for the youth today about
their passion?
Passion is when you do something
without expecting any reward.
It is all about doing things
by wholeheartedly giving all
your efforts. Therefore, I hope
whatever your passion is—especially
music, be honest with
yourself; be who you truly are.
Who is your biggest role model
when it comes to a career?
My biggest role models are Brian
McKnight and David Foster. They are
two great musicians with long-lasting
career who have produced amazing
work. David Foster is one of the
examples of a musician that shines
behind the scenes; he has other
singers perform his creations. Meanwhile,
Brian McKnight is the example
of a great singer who also composes
songs. Both of them complete each
other, and that’s why I admire them.
“Without music,
I would be nothing”.
What was the worst thing that
has ever happened to you on
stage?
I once had a jazz band, and I got to
perform in rural areas where people
weren’t expecting the songs
that I was performing. I think they
were expecting to hear either dangdut
or rock music. Some people
even tried to throw bottles at me.
There is a lot of ways to express, celebrate and enjoy the love. However, some
people actually expressed their love by building architectural landmarks for their
loved ones. Architecture can also be an emotional experience, especially with
phenomology playing into the practice so naturally. Talking about the amazing
flexibility of architecture, the practice has always correlated with the arts of every
part of the creation.
Going back to the 12th century and its
precious heritage of gothic architecture,
one of the most beautiful examples is
Juliet’s House in Verona, Italy. The 700
year-old house is the place where Capello
(Shakespeare named them Capuletti)
family lived, described in detail
in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. In
1667, the family sold the house to Rissardi
family who turned the house into
some kind of a hotel. Travelers used to
stay for the night there, and the owners
of the house would tell them about
the Shakespeare’s heroine who used to
live in the house. However, this house
did not differ from any other houses
in Italy. In 1907, it was put up for auction
and was bought by the city authorities.
After that, the decision to
turn the house to a museum was made.
Inside the house exists a bedroom Juliet
used to stay, and also a replica of
the tombstone of Juliet. One part of
the house became tourist attraction is
the balcony, which was built in 1937 to
represent the place Juliet waited for Romeo.
Besides the balcony, there is also
a bronze statue of Juliet; it is believed
that if someone touches the chestal part
of the statue, they will earn fortune in
their love life. However, the most interesting
part of the house is the Wall
of Juliet. On the wall, there are hundreds
of love letters containing heartfelt
messages about love. Tradition to stick
Juliet letters on the wall has been going
on since 1940. Hundreds of letters
attached to the wall will be taken by
women who volunteer to respond them
one by one with a romantic sentence.
If I could redraw the love sign, it would be the infinity symbol
to replace the current love sign. A simple symbol, which looks
like the number 8 turned on its side. An English mathematician
named John Wallis on the 17th century first introduced infinity
symbol. The symbol was to represent the idea of a sum that is
larger than any number that can ever be created.
∞
For me, the complexness as
well as permanence the infinity symbol
represents weaves in and out of many
forms of love; love doesn’t necessarily
limited to love of your boyfriends or girlfriends.
Love is more than that, it could
be love for family, country, passion, God
and so on all have different qualities. I
read one of the articles of Julian Baggini—philosopher—talked
about variants
of love, he mentioned that love has its
variants: blind, one-sided, tragic, steadfast,
fickle, reciprocated, misguided, unconditional.
Therefore, the complexity
and great power of love is suitable to be
represented in form of an infinity symbol.
- Epsilone Delphini
(Cohort 2014)
“Love is infinite. There is no beginning
and no end. There’s no starting point
and no finishing line. Love just is. Love
is born, grows, matures, and sometimes
it dies. But the memory will remain with
you for the rest of your breathing hours.
You will fall in love, you will fall out of
love. But you will love again. You always
do.” – Mia Asher, Arsen
Love is part of our life. Everything is
DEADPOOL
Movie Review
| Written by Fahreza G. Avicena
Jokes and bullets are tossed like confetti in Deadpool
– a perfect example of a movie dedicated to comic
book fans, and also the movie a lot of guys are going to
ask their understanding girlfriends to watch during the
valentine weekend. Deadpool is far from a superhero
film. Sure, the main character looks like Spider-man to a
comic book agnostic and has a penchant for killing the
bad guys, but he’s got a heart and a moral compass;
albeit, a rather ambiguous one in his own brand of
unorthodox justice. The movie revolves around the
origins of yet another iconic Marvel character known
as Deadpool. Besides being an action film, it’s also a
love story, if one manages to see through the sarcasm.
Before going into the details, some background story is
in order. Wade Wilson AKA Deadpool is a former Special
Forces soldier turned gun-for-hire and human mutant,
similar to the famous X-Man Wolverine, who possesses
The foul-mouthed love
story you cannot miss!
an accelerated regenerative ability, commonly referred
to as a healing factor − rendering him immortal and
nearly invincible. He is also a talkative and sarcastic
man known for his wise cracks, unpredictable behavior
and fourth-wall breaking tendencis for humorous
effect. In the comics, he’s even aware that he is a
comic character. It’s a plot tool used by the writers
to great effect as the basis of many inside jokes in
the comics, such as from pop culture references and
sexual innuendos, earning him nicknames such as
“Merc with a Mouth” and “Regenerating Degenerate”.
Wade Wilson is scarred, edgy, antic, and maybe a little
crazy – the kind of character you would not expect a
likable lightweight like Ryan Reynolds to play. But
Reynolds, who has already been burned – and badly –
by the superhero genre, appears ready not to make the
same mistake again. In the misbegotten Green Lantern
he was fatally uncool, but in Deadpool he delivers his
verbal fusillades with the nonchalance of someone who
doesn’t care if he lives or dies, and his slightly fey nihilism
is infectious. He invests the act of not giving a damn with
conviction. With such a unique, erratic, and carefree yet
witty personality, Deadpool has become a fan favorite
over the years; a reason why the movie has been highly
anticipated from 2004, but was trapped in development
hell until 2009, before finally released at 2016.
In superhero fantasy, there’s a grand tradition of
characters, both good and evil –the Hulk, the Joker –
who find their physical and spiritual identities through
68

Cohort. issue 2
great ordeals; their patron saint might be the Phantom
of the Opera. In Deadpool, Wade joins this gallery of
darkly empowered freaks, but what makes him more
than a gloss on the disfigured icons of comic books
past is that the film doesn’t just pay lip service to the
torments he has to endure. It makes us feel his pain.
Even prior to his transformation, Wade is an alarmingly
unhinged badass. He hooks up with Vanessa (Morena
Baccarin), who matches his pierced-punk vibe. Baccarin,
as fiery as she is gorgeous, strikes the kind of sparks
with Reynolds that love interests in superhero films too
often don’t. When their idyll is interrupted by Wade’s
diagnosis of advanced lung cancer, we feel as if we’re
in his doomed shoes. Personally, a cancer-stricken
male character plus romance? Kind of reminiscent of
The Fault in our Stars, don’t you think? Which made
me think Deadpool may even earn a romantic nod
and recommendation as a valentine movie from us
hopeless romantics for the tale of Wade’s love for
Vanessa as the pair enjoy a fairytale (albeit depraved)
romance – until Wade discovers that late-stage cancer
has spread to his liver, lungs, prostate, and brain.
With nothing to lose, Wade joins an underground
mutant-superhero program that promises to cure his
disease and give him untold powers. The catch? He has
to go through the torments of the damned. The leader
of the experiment, a smirking sadist named Ajax (Ed
Skrein), keeps inventing new physical punishments, so
that Wade’s body, in response, will either “mutate or
die”. This grisly sequence gives Deadpool a touch of
horror beneath its jokey surface. Wade survives, with
a body that’s invincible, but also with a scarred face
that makes him look like the preppy son of Freddy
Krueger. Unlike the conventional origin hero stories
out there, Deadpool has nothing to do with saving
the world. He just wants to hunt down Ajax, coerce
him to fix his face, and maybe kill him just for kicks.
The film’s first-time director, Tim Miller, gives us opening
credits worthy of recognition with slow-mo mayhem
showing his earned experienced from Thor: The Dark
World. He also keeps having Reynolds’ Deadpool
break the fourth wall: not just by directly addressing the
audience but by making fun of other Marvel movies and
actors. When he’s on a roll, nobody is spared. When
Deadpool is on the warpath, his weapon of choice is a
pair of ninja swords he uses to turn bad guys into chopped
liver, and he’s quite upfront about what he’s doing. It’s not
just crime-fighting, it’s murder. The downside of the film’s
elemental revenge plot is that it rarely feels like there’s
a lot at stake. Deadpool hooks you into Wade’s trauma,
but mostly it’s content to skate along on the cheekiness
of his death-sport attitude. However, the underlying love
story between Wade and Vanessa speaks volumes of
how the fundamentals of love exists everywhere and
known to anyone, such love is blind and with everything
considered, love conquers all. And summarizing
the film’s airy cynicism about Deadpool: he’s not
the hero we dream of, he’s just the one we deserve.
THE
LOBSTER
Movie Review
| Written by Rio A. Ramzy
Image from ew.com
Universal love. What a theme. Since February will be
a very memorable month thanks to Valentine’s Day,
it is time to rethink about how we view the concept of
love. Every person has a different view and interpretation
of love, and that is acceptable. Whether you say that
love actually is everywhere (quoting the narration of
Love Actually) or that love is lust with jealousy added
(quoting Joe from Nymphomaniac Vol. I), everyone does
not have to have one definition of love. However, in the
hands of the renowned Greek auteur and an absurdist
Yorgos Lanthimos, love is an enigma in a rigid society
and a matter of life and death.
Set in The City, this movie centers on our hero, David
(Colin Farrell). David has been recently admitted to
The Hotel, which is a rather luxurious quarantine, if not
a prison, for single people. Rule of The City states that
being single is prohibited. People who are admitted to
The Hotel must find a partner in 45 days or else being
transformed into an animal of their choice. We are taken
into a journey where David searches for the right one for
his broken heart in a society with a very odd definition
of love.
Yorgos Lanthimos is memorable not only because his
body of work is mainly absurdism, but also because
that they contain some sort of satire. Dogtooth deals
with parent overprotectiveness. Alps deals with the
grieving. Now, The Lobster presents you an original and
unconventional satire about couple-fixated society. The
Lobster manages to do this with flying colors, touching
subjects like matchmaking and ‘compatibility test’ in
a powerful manner that the satire really slaps us and
makes us view that coupledom in our society is wrong in
many ways. The atmosphere, the pale color palette, the
unique characteristics of the people in the movie and
their action give us an unsettling yet familiar and comedic
combination which supports the movie’s message. The
cast are also shining in the movie. Colin Farrell seems
to make a breakthrough career with his awkward,
strong yet fragile and lovable character. Rachel Weisz
proves that her character and David are a powerful
pair that can be awkward, humorous, and tragic at the
same time. The pairing is developed beautifully without
exaggeration that we can oddly be sympathetic to them
amidst the peculiar nature of their society.
Another thing to add is that this movie is Lanthimos’ first
English-language feature. Normally, when directors
from non-English speaking countries try to make
their first feature in English, the stakes are quite high.
International and well-known cast may place the risk on
an even higher place. However, Lanthimos successfully
produced a movie which can be acceptable for more
diverse audience without losing his storytelling style.
The fact that this movie won Jury Prize at 2015 Cannes
Film Festival seems to prove that Yorgos Lanthimos has
already matured as a director and worth to be counted
as a considerable force in international film industry.
In conclusion, this movie is highly recommended for
people who want to refresh their minds from the tragic
and ridiculously romantic movies in Valentine’s Day. The
peculiarity adds a sense of familiarity to the audience, and
the story is perfectly executed. Why bother watching the
same type of movies when you can be outside of the box?
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF
THE SPOTLESS MIND
Movie Review
| Written by Purwita P. Ariana
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tells the story
of a couple who goes through the process of erasing
each other from their own memory after a bad fight.
Nevertheless, small fragments of their past memory
reunite them again.
Joel Barish is a shy and well-mannered guy who always
thinks everything through. One morning on his way to
work, he impulsively takes the train to Montauk. On his
way he meets a girl named Clementine Kruczynski,
whose personality is the total opposite of his. They are
immediately drawn to each other and decides to spend
time together, without realizing how they used to be an
item.
In the past, Clementine decided to get rid of Joel from
her memory after a huge fight by hiring Lacuna Inc. −
a firm which provides clients a service to erase their
memory of a person they wanted to forget. Joel was
very confused when he went to visit clementine in her
workplace where upon seeing her, she treated him
as a customer and kissed another man in front of him.
Joel then discovered her action through his friend, and
decided to do the same.
During the process of erasing his memory of Clementine,
he experiences flashbacks and visions, including
Lacuna’s memory-erasing process. The scene starts to
shift; from the first time they met each other, to the verge
of their relationship’s meltdown. Throughout the process,
Joel realizes how important Clementine actually is to
him and starts regretting his choice, so he tries to find a
way to not forget Clementine. Nevertheless his effort is
useless.
They both are devastated upon discovering their past.
Joel wants to starts over, but Clementine is terrified. She
is afraid that it will end up bad, but then agrees to starts
over.
“I don’t need nice. I don’t need myself to be it, and I
don’t need anybody else to be it at me.”
- Clementine
This is the type of movie that does not have a chronological
order, since the story goes back and forth between the
past and the present. The storyline itself exists in the
mind of Joel Barish, where his memory of Clementine
is what he is holding on to as it starts to disappear. The
movie switches back and forth between the unconscious
mind and reality. At the end of the movie, we come to the
realization that memory is a huge aspect of life. When
the most important memory is gone, we become lost.
The movie’s slow pace could confuse the audience who
did not pay attention to the movie. This movie leaves out
many hints for the audience to discover the backstory and
the real meaning behind the story themselves. Audience
will be driven to analyze the meaning behind each
memory and the connection between each character.
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is perfect for those
who enjoy analyzing stories and their hidden meaning.
JESSICA JONES S1
Season Wrap-up
| Written by Jason Taslim
Jessica Jones is a TV series based on a comic book
made by Marvel. Its first episode aired on 20 th
November of 2015, with 13 episodes in total for its first
season, each running for an hour. Even though some
people are intimidated by TV series that runs an hour
per episode, this TV series is worth the watch.
This series tells the story of Jessica Jones, a personal
investigator that at first glance seems to be an ordinary
person with a mediocre life, living her life in New York
City. As the story unveils, her tragic past gets uncovered
one by one, letting the audience see her past and
progress on her character development. Jessica has
super strength; she claims not to hide her powers from
the public, but doesn’t advertise it either. She however,
tried to become a super hero with the encouragement of
her best friend. Unfortunately things didn’t seem to work
out for her, especially after a devastating incident that
happened to her, leaving her with PSTD.
The story did a good job in managing not to tell the
viewers a lot of her past all at once, creating a bunch
of cliffhangers from episode to episode. This series
managed to play a lot with the viewer’s feelings. It also
makes a point that no matter how strong someone is,
there is always a weakness; strong people can break
down too. Even though she puts up a tough façade, she
only wants everyone to be safe, and the only way to do
that is to shut everyone out before developing an actual
relationship. However as the series progressed, she
eventually realizes that she can’t do everything alone.
Additionally, the story not only displays love between
lovers, but also love between friends. Jessica wants
all her friends to be happy, but she knows that no one
close to her is safe. All her friends want to help her,
but Kilgrave’s (the antagonist) mind-controlling powers
makes her unable to let them help, and even makes it
hard for her to trust them. She blames all the damage
caused by Kilgrace on herself, causing her to break
down multiple times.
Besides Jessica herself, this series did justice
on other characters’ characterization, which made for
a good core of a TV series. Despite its running time,
the show managed to entice the viewers by again
exploring not only the main character’s story, but
also the development of other characters, even minor
ones. What’s better is that the revelation of Kilgrave’s
backstory let us to sympathize with him a bit more, up
to a point where you would actually side with him since
there is a reason why he did all of the horrible things.
All in all, watching the series was an amazing
experience. It successfully made viewers more and
more enticed after each episode. The show explored
the definition of being a hero from different perspectives,
where the truth is everyone can be a hero in every little
thing they do.
“They say everyone’s born a hero. But if you let
it, life will push you over the line until you’re the
villain. Problem is, you don’t always know that
you’ve crossed that line. Maybe it’s enough that the
world thinks I’m a hero.”
BETTER CALL SAUL
Returning Series
| Written by Fachrul Azhar
Following the steps of Breaking Bad is no easy feat.
As one of the most beloved series ever created,
there’s a certain level of expectation that is set to its
successor; a level that turned especially high with a
fan-favorite being the center of the show. Better Call
Saul tells the story of one man’s journey to become
Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). Before he became
everyone’s favorite criminal lawyer and took part in the
rise of Walt’s drug empire, Saul Goodman was Jimmy
McGill – a hardworking and optimistic lawyer who
struggles to make ends meet while also taking care of
his ill brother Chuck (Michael McKean), a well-respected
lawyer whose success aspires Jimmy. The first season
spanned for ten episodes airing last year from February
to April, and was generally well-received by viewers
and critics alike.
Better Call Saul is as much as Saul’s transformation tale
as Breaking Bad is to Walter White. Initially, the main
protagonist of both series are also motivated by the
same thing: love, especially towards family. The starkest
difference is that in Breaking Bad, viewers witnessed how
cancer transforms Walt from a struggling high school
chemistry teacher to a ruthless drug overlord, unaware
of the extent he would reach as the series progressed.
With Better Call Saul, viewers are already aware of the
endgame − of how far Jimmy will eventually break bad.
The pilot opens with a black and white sequence set
in present day, establishing Saul’s condition post the
original series; a cautiously alert man, haunted by his
past, trying to keep a low profile. The sequence then
concludes with a shot of Saul − now assuming the name
Gene – watching a DVR recording of the ads from his
days as a criminal lawyer. The camera zooms into
Saul’s glasses, revealing a colorful reflection of his old
ads – then cut to the groovy, saturated title sequence,
purposely made by the creators to look amateurish. Cut
to black; gone is the black and white tint, and comes
the warm, vibrant tone akin to that of Breaking Bad’s.
It’s an interesting choice of style since duller tints are
usually used to depict the past, but it works to the show’s
advantage since it’s essentially a prequel. It underlined
its purpose by muting what’s already known, and putting
emphasis on what viewers are unaware of – the origin
story of Saul Goodman.
Around three quarters of the first season mainly revolves
around the Kettleman’s embezzlement arc introduced in
the pilot, and follows Jimmy’s endeavor in taking over
the case from HHM (Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill – a major
Albuquerque-based law firm owned by Chuck and his
colleague Howard) while still hustling other cases to
jumpstart his own one-man firm. Howard (Patrick Fabian)
is depicted as the big bad who single-handedly ruins
everything Jimmy does to improve his career. The
conflict escalates to the point where Jimmy declares a
full-on battle against Hamlin by purchasing a billboard
which rips off HHM, and orchestrating a publicity stunt
that brought him more clients.
An important detail in the series is how Jimmy’s brother
Chuck self-diagnosed himself with a condition called
electromagnetic hypersensitivity, making him decide
to completely cut himself off from modern technology
and outside life, hence requiring Jimmy’s assistance
to get him basic needs. Chuck’s condition raised more
problems especially after Jimmy’s publicity stunt. As a
78

Cohort. issue 2
misunderstanding with two cops got Chuck hospitalized,
Jimmy is presented with the notion that Chuck’s condition
isn’t real, but a manifestation of something deeper.
Other than Saul himself, his fixer Mike Ehrmantraut
(Jonathan Banks) also appeared in the series as a
main character. After appearing as a one-note parking
lot attendant who argues a lot with Jimmy in earlier
episodes, he eventually becomes involved with Jimmy’s
line of work. The character got a well-deserved spotlight
in episode six where his past as a cop is explored – the
episode which probably garnered Banks his Emmy nod.
Another notable character in the series is Kim Wexler
(Rhea Seehorn) – a tireless litigator at HHM whom Jimmy
shares an intimate history with. Jimmy tries to help her
throughout the season despite the damaging outcomes,
as in solving the Kettleman case. When he finally gets
the chance to significantly improve his business with the
Kettlemans ditching HHM and coming to him, Jimmy to
enlist Mike in helping him manipulate the Kettlemans to
“do the right thing” and revert back to Kim in the equally
excellent and heartbreaking seventh episode – costing
Jimmy a real shot at vastly improving his career, and
marking the end of the embezzlement arc.
It wasn’t the only major arc in the season, though. Per
Kim’s advice, Jimmy decided to specialize in elder law,
and it brought him to the last big arc of season one.
Jimmy finds out how the retirement home of his clients
have been overcharging them. His discovery leads him
to actually work alongside Chuck, giving Jimmy a real
chance to actually win the case, and also forced both
of them to confront some truth about Chuck’s condition.
Throughout its run, Breaking Bad showed how good or
bad is just a matter of perspective – how everyone’s
moral compass isn’t completely black or white. Gus
Fring genuinely cared for people outside the drugdealing
world, and was also a man of honor. Todd highly
respected Walt, sparing him some money for his family
and paid condolences after the ordeal in the desert.
Even the psychotic Tuco still valued respect. The last
two episodes of Better Call Saul explained how Hamlin
isn’t inherently bad, and at the same time revealed how
Chuck hasn’t exactly been the most supporting brother
to Jimmy.
Early on, the series explored Jimmy’s past as a scamartist
nicknamed “Slippin’ Jimmy” through flashbacks
and dialogues. After figuring out Chuck’s disdain
towards him, Jimmy decides to venture back to Illinois
for a sabbatical in the finale. He is reunited with his old
partner-in-crime Marco, and the pair goes back to their
old scamming habit. During their last scam together
before Jimmy decides to go back to Albuquerque, a
tragedy ensues, making Jimmy question on how doing
the right thing has never worked to his advantage. He
decides to ditch his shot on working for another major
firm and drives off to Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the
Water’ – edging him closer to fully embracing the moral
ambiguity he’s well-known for in the original series.
So far, Better Call Saul has a considerably less brutish plot
compared to Breaking Bad. However, the show surely
managed to remind viewers of the more violent nature
of its predecessor in the first two episodes, where the
first main antagonist of Breaking Bad Tuco Salamanca
(Raymond Cruz) made a literally bone-breaking
appearance. Notably, Tuco’s role in the whole season
was quite minor, as he was more or less present so that
the show could introduce Nacho (Michael Mando), his
right-hand man. Nacho has been more prominent in the
series so far, with him being tangled into the Kettleman
case, and also played a role in Mike’s side-jobs.
Overall, it was a surprisingly satisfying season. With
compelling writing and solid direction providing an
already-promising base, Odenkirk successfully held
the show together as the central character, exceeding
expectations and dispelling intial doubts. It’s going to be
both interesting and devastating to see Jimmy transform
into – as Betsy Kettleman stated – “The kind of lawyer
that guilty people hire”.
Season 2 premieres on February 15, 2016.
Reported by Poulina Phangrestu
Written Compiled by Widad by Kevin A. Shalannandia Jonathan
On 22nd December 2015, our beloved campus — Indonesia
International Institute for Life Sciences (i3L) — held a Half-Day
Seminar that raised the topic of “Optimizing Indigenous Sources
for Functional Foods Creation-Challenges and Opportunities”.
In the seminar, four experienced researchers from differentinstitutions
(Ehime University, i3L, PATPI, and PERGIZI PANGAN)
were exclusively invited to share their priceless knowledge with
all the audiences. These speakers were really passionate in
developing the future of science, so they shared a bit of their
thoughts with CreativeMedia Club about their experiences, research
interests and some tips for all future scientists to become
a great researcher.
Professor Takuya Sugahara
Professor Takuya Sugahara is a researcher and
a faculty member of Bio-resources Department
in the Faculty of Agriculture, Ehime University,
Japan. He has been a researcher for more than
25 years and has published more than 120 papers
since he was a student. Most of the papers
that he wrote are on functional food, a topic he
puts much interest in. He is now evaluating Ishizuchi
Dark Tea, to identify the functional activities
it possesses, so that it can be commercialized
well in the market.
Agus Budiawan Naro Putra, PhD
This interesting statement was said by Mr. Agus
Budiawan Naro Putra, Ph.D or familiarly called
Pak Naro. He is one of the faculty members and
researchers in Indonesia International Institute for
Life Sciences (I3L) in Food Science Department.
Pak Naro has been a researcher for around 7
years with food as his expertise. In his years as
a scientist, he already has 5 international publications
and 3 national publications, with a large
focus on active substances in marine foods. He
is also interested in the research on jellyfish collagen;
though the jellyfish collagen is not a commonly
used substance, Pak Naro wants to use this
kind of resources and make it more useful.
Seeing the fact that Indonesia has around 250
million citizens, Pak Naro believes that there is urgency
for Indonesia to improve its food quality in
the future. As people of the future, we also need
to think about how to develop food for Indonesia.
For example, we can start by thinking how to increase
the shelf-life of the foods, exhibit health
benefits, and help economy of Indonesia – how
can we contribute to a better future?
“
Because I like it. I like eating. I like
food. Also, the image of food is
always beautiful. When you see
the image of fresh fruits and fresh
vegetables, they have green color
or red color. So beautiful. That
is why food catch my interest so
much.
“
To become a good researcher: Study
hard. Like in my Ph.D, I tried to read at
least 5 papers a day because by reading
the paper, we know the current
innovation in science and technology.
”
COMMUNICATION
Ardiansyah, PhD
Mr. Ardiansyah, PhD is a secretary of Indonesian Association of Food Technologist (PATPI) and a
staff member of Food Science & Technology Department at Bakrie University. Food is a very important
aspect of our life, as it is related to our daily activity. The fact that human cannot do photosynthesis
or produce their own food become the main reason why we need to study about food. In 12
years of his experiences as a researcher, he has 11 publications with 9 of them on rice bran. He is
interested in the topic because Indonesia produces around 70 million kg of rice, in which 10% of it is
the number of rice bran that is produced. This is indeed a huge number; therefore, he wonders why
don’t we utilize and apply it as functional food.
As a country rich in natural resources, Indonesia needs to gather information from research activities.
This includes the industries when it comes to functional foods. The problem is that we are still
lacking of information regarding this matter. Therefore, he is trying to focus on that particular area of
study as he believes that it has a great potential in the future to develop a better world.
“
To become a good researcher: Do the best
on basic science first. Without basic sciences,
you cannot do the foundation of the
futureresearch. What are basic sciences?
Biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics,
and so on. If you have a strong foundation on
that, you can choose what area you want to
go deeper.
”
Prof. Dr. Ir. Hardisyah
Prof. Hardinsyah, a President of PERGIZI PANGAN Department of Community Nutrition at IPB, has 33
years of experience as a researcher in nutrition field. He excitedly sees this area from the health
point of view because nutrition is something that concerns most people every day.
The great number of population in Indonesia has become a main concern for him. Every single day
we need to consume food. The father and mother have to feed their children as well as themselves.
Moreover, a large number of people start to become more health conscious in recent years. Thus,
they would like to have a good quality, safe, and also nutritious foods. This shows that the improvement
of food quality in Indonesia is becoming more and more important.
There are many parts to a body. Within those body parts, there are certain roles. Some are small, while others
big. But what keeps the body running is the teamwork operating in every single role. That’s how i3l works. With
the amount of people entering and exiting the premises, Pak Mulyono and his team are the people that work
behind the scenes of our campus to provide assistance in allowing the school to operate securely and smoothly
on daily basis! Clearly taking up the job is no easy task; luckily Officer Mulyono is the perfect person for the job.
Why did you take up being a security guard as
your profession?
My original goal was to become a police officer, but
when there was a position opening up to become
a security; I thought, why not? The way I see it, being
a security on this campus resembles a police
officer, I get to aid and assist every individual on this
campus.
What made you want to work in i3L?
Working at I3L is distinct from other campuses in
Jakarta. For instance, with the growing number of
students at i3L, taking up this position is no easy
job; I enjoy working here because the kids are well
mannered, polite and kind, making the job worthwhile.
Students here have no problem abiding the
rules that are set, and that’s hard to find that in other
campuses in Jakarta.
Were there any special moments out of the time
you have worked at I3L?
The students here are different, again, unlike any other
campuses. The students here are easy to talk to
and joke around with. It is a privilege to assist them
daily without hassle. As for the faculty, everything has
been going fine in my few months of working here.
The faculty members and staffs are friendly, informative
and very easy to work with.
Any words for the faculty, students and i3L family?
It’s a joy to see the look on these kids faces everyday
as they enter the campus facility and how kind they
are with people. I wish every faculty, staff and student
at I3L much success in all their endeavors.
hand, CHAR3L has held some pre-events,
such as: FUTCHAL tournament, selling food
and drinks, books donation for fundraising.
This event was specially designed to support
and encourage the kids to keep pursuing
their dreams and education. As we all
know, kids these days–especially for those
who come from family that are less fortunate
tends to quit school and leave their dreams
behind. Thus, the aim of this event is to make
the kids are aware of who they actually are
and discover their potential as human beings.
The first thing that the team did was getting
the library of Yayasan Bhakti Nurul Iman
fixed. Then, Ms. Dias Rima Sutiono delivered
a meaningful motivational session about life
and its hardship. Ms. Dias also shared how
she overcame the problems in life with a
very touching story of her life experience.
All in all, the main point of the session is that
“it is okay to not have an aspiration of what
we want to work as in the future but having
a dream is the most important –having a
dream is the key.” The next session! The story
time; this section is all about delivering a
meaningful message about fighting to reach
their dreams through a story. Photo-shoots
session was conducted afterwards, this
section allows the kids to be photographed
as if they are in their graduation as a symbol
of motivation for them to keep pursuing
their education. Hopefully, through the sessions
they will develop an understanding
that there are no obstacles too high as long
as they try their best in everything. Not only
for the children, but all of the facilitators also
were happy of the event and are delighted
The party-go-ers in Indonesia and all across
South East Asia had been waiting for this good
vibes of EDM (electronic dance music) in Djakarta
Warehous Project (DWP) for two consecutive
days! Electronic Dance Music Festival
has attracted over 70,000 people all across
South East Asia. DWP 2015 took place at JI-
DWP 2015 has the really outstanding lineups.
There were two legends performing for
the party, which are Armin Van Buuren as
the “God of Trance Music” and Tiesto as the
multi-talented DJ in the world. Galantis, Jack
U, Major Lazer, Kaskade, Tiesto and other outstanding
DJs were giving nothing but the best!
“DWP 2015 was incredibly fantastic,
it was only for 2 days but the feeling
stays for a year. Had been waiting
for the 2015 show ever since 2014.
I’ve been waiting for Jack U, Galantis,
Major Lazer for their epic performances.
The best moment on this festival
is when you can go crazy with
your friends while listening to your
favorite DJs, and what i do really
miss from this festival is the perfect
ambience. All in all, my favorite performance
would be Jack U’s performance
with the song “Where are U
now” and “Take U There”. Definitely
looking forward for the next “EAT.
DWP. REPEAT.” -Christian Rifinata
