The aims for AS and A Level English<br />
Literature are to encourage<br />
wide reading and advanced detailed<br />
research within the field of literary<br />
studies. The course builds<br />
on the skills, knowledge and understanding<br />
acquired by candidates<br />
taking English Language and English<br />
Literature at GCSE; it offers a<br />
programme of study that will be rewarding<br />
and enjoyable in its own<br />
right, and forms a basis for further<br />
specialist study at degree level.<br />
Possible Progression<br />
A level English is a pivotal subject<br />
which means that most subjects go<br />
well with it. Therefore many careers<br />
are open to English students. However<br />
the most obvious professions<br />
are Law, Journalism, Teaching, Administration,<br />
Civil Services, Banking<br />
and the Media. English is an<br />
essential A level qualification for<br />
students intending to continue with<br />
the subject to degree level.<br />
Course Details<br />
The aims of this course are to develop<br />
an understanding of a wide<br />
range of reading material; to<br />
sharpen writing skills, exploring a<br />
variety of writing genres; and to understand<br />
the use of spoken language.<br />
It builds on key skills<br />
developed in both Literature and<br />
Language studies at GCSE. However,<br />
the understanding of the mechanics<br />
of language is developed<br />
further through exploring linguistic<br />
features such as grammar and phonetics.<br />
It is a rewarding and broad<br />
AS which will fine-tune key communication<br />
skills and develop an appreciation<br />
of Literature.<br />
Possible Progression<br />
A Level English Literature and Language<br />
is a pivotal subject, most<br />
subjects go well with it. Many careers<br />

the Media, Speech Therapy and careers<br />
in areas of Psychology (the<br />
study of Linguistics can involve a<br />
study of the Psychology of Language<br />
and Behaviour). Students<br />
can continue to pursue a degree in<br />
English, English Literature and Language<br />
or English Language.<br />
Students will develop an understanding<br />
of French in a variety of<br />
contexts and genres and learn to<br />
communicate confidently, clearly<br />
and effectively for a range of purposes.<br />
They will develop an awareness<br />
of contemporary society,<br />
cultural background and heritage of<br />
countries and communities where<br />
French is spoken, and will be able<br />
to take their place in a multilingual<br />
global society. In addition, the full A<br />
level course is designed to provide<br />
a sufficient basis for the further<br />
study of Foreign Languages at degree<br />
level or equivalent.<br />
Possible Progression<br />
Language degrees, Business Studies,<br />
Law, Tourism or Marketing. Any<br />
career that requires one of the following:<br />
communication skills, problem<br />
solving skills, initiative,<br />
flexibility or experience of other cultures.<br />
Students that study languages<br />
are highly sought after by<br />
universities for language degrees<br />
or courses with a language component.
