Frosty has been amputated.
That’s the announcement my husband
made when he came back in the
house from scooping snow on Sunday.
The way the snow
blows by our house
means there is almost
always a drift across
our front sidewalk. We
were thankful that Saturday
night’s weather
didn’t get to be as bad
as was forecast, but
that drift still needed
to be tackled.
We had a 6-foot tall
lighted snowman in
front of our house for
the holidays, but as

the snow came, he ended up buried to the
point that I couldn’t get him out when we
took the greenery and lights down from our
front door. I asked my son to scoop him
out, but the bottom section was securely
frozen in place, and only an ice pick would
have gotten us through that mess.
But I’ve been concerned that the wind is
taking a toll on Frosty, with parts of his hat
coming unfastened, and one of his arms
getting knocked to the side from the snowblower.
He’s such an adorable snowman
that I’d like him to be part of our decor for
a few more years, so my husband went to
Frosty’s rescue.
That bottom section still wouldn’t budge,
so Jeff disassembled Frosty from the top
down.
There is now two-thirds of a snowman
drying out in the garage. The bottom third
is still in the snowbank.
Next year we’ll have to apply the Humpty
Dumpty approach to Frosty, and see if we

Chidren’s story comes to life at Pearson Lakes Art Center
An afternoon of adventure awaits
an audience next weekend at
the Pearson Lakes Art Center in
Okoboji.
Skippyjon Jones is a Siamese cat
who believes he’s a Mexican chihuahua
and whose imagination often
takes him on wild adventures as his
alter ego Skippito Friskito.
The performance put on by a cast
from Theatreworks USA will spin
the most recent tale, Skippyjon Jones
Snow What, into live action on stage
in the Lauridsen Performing Arts
Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 and the show is geared
for children ages four and up.
“I, myself, love Skippyjon Jones and
was first introduced to the books in a
high school Spanish class,” performing
arts director Amanda Schindler
said. “This play is a twist on the Snow
White story and should be super fun
as Skippyjon uses his imagination
to become his alter ego rescues princesses
and defeats dragons.”
The production is based on the
lastest in Judy Schachner’s Skippyjon
Jones children’s book series, but is
not the only one to have been transformed
into children’s musical theatre.
Director Kevin Del Aguila wrote a
musical adaptation for the original
SkippyJon Jones book four years ago.
The Emmy-winning writer has nearly
done it all with Theatreworks USA
having acted, directed and written for
the company.
“It was such fun and a success that
we decided we should do a sequel and
the writer actually sent us an advance
copy of Snow What,” Del Aguila said.
“This one turned out to be more
action-packed and is very family
friendly. In fact one of the most pleasant
surprises is seeing parents and
adults enjoy the show right alongside
their kids.”
For Schindler having children’s
theatre at the art center is a great way
to help foster an appreciation for all
forms of art at an early age. That’s
also part of the reason she’ll be trying
to bring two children’s shows to the
PLAC each year, one in spring and one
in the fall.
“It’s important for kids to be exposed
to all forms of art and putting
on children’s theatre is one way for
them to get interested in the arts in
some way,” Schindler said. “With
Skippyjon Jones in particular there
is always a lesson pertaining to sharing,
cooperation or something along
those lines, which is always a good
thing. With this show it’s also a great
way to learn a few small words in another
language.”
In Skippyjon Jones, with his alter
ego Skippito Friskito who must save
the princess Nieve Que along with
his trusted Seven Chimichangos, that
other language is Spanish.
“The play is a lot of fun like the
books with very wacky, fun word play
with some Hispanic mix to it, a sort
of Spanglish vocabulary,” Del Aguila
said. “The music also has a lot of
Spanish flair to it.”
The troupe set out on the road in
January and will tour all around the
country until sometime in May or
June.
At each stop the children and adults
in the audience get to see the familiar
characters of Skippyjon Jones come to
life right in front of them on stage.

with River Valley Players
The River Valley Players of Rock
Rapids are inviting you to take a
trip down the yellow brick road.
This community theatre organization
is taking on one of the most
popular stories of the last century.
The River Valley Players will be performing
the L. Frank Baum version of
“Wizard of Oz” on Feb. 26-28. Shows
on Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday, Feb.
27 will take place at 7:30 p.m. and on
Sunday, Feb. 28, the show will begin
at 2 p.m.
The show will take place in the Forster
Auditorium at Central Lyon High
School in Rock Rapids.
This version of the the show was
selected for a number of reasons, according
to the show’s director Marilee
Schleusner.
“This is the ‘Wizard of Oz’ version
that was performed by the Royal
Shakespeare Company and is sort
of like the movie,” Schleusner said.
“There are more opportunities in this
version to feature the chorus, which
will give those people more of a
chance to be on stage.”
Getting all of the 80-some cast
members on stage is no small feat.
“This is a really community-oriented
production. Our cast is made up
of people who are all ages anywhere
from seven years old to people in their
60s,” Schleusner said. “The fun part
of doing this show with community
theater is that adults and kids alike get
to use their imaginations to become
these characters.”
The adults in the show are playing
most of the lead roles and the school
age actors are rounding out the cast
by playing a variety of roles such as
munchkins or flying monkeys.
One special role will actually have
two different actors portraying the
character. One human and the other
actor is of the canine variety.
“While Dorothy is in Kansas, Toto
will be played a live dog and when she
is transported to Oz, then Toto will be
played by a person,” Schleusner said.
“It will be fun to see the live dog on
stage.”
They started rehearsals on Jan. 4
and have been practicing three days a
week ever since for the big debut.
One of the most fun parts about doing
this musical has been sharing the
story with a new generation, according
to Schleusner.
“Almost everyone knows the ‘Wizard
of Oz,’ so we’ve had lots of people
step up to help out who might not
have with other performances,” Schleusner
said. “Even though this show
is so well loved there are some of the
little ones who didn’t actually know
the show. So it’s been fun to share it
with them.”
They are also excited to share this
beloved story with you. It’s an open
invitation to join them on a trip down
the yellow brick road. F

While the people of Orange
City might be Dutch through
and through it doesn’t mean
that they can’t get their Irish up.
And they’ll certainly be doing that
on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. when
Jerry Barlow comes to town. Barlow
is from Golden, CO, and he’s a Celtic
fingerstyle guitarist. Barlow is also
going to be performing at the Sioux
Center Public Library on Thursday,
Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
He delivers a unique repertoire that
skillfully incorporates both traditional
songs as well as Celtic songs that
Barlow has written himself. He performs
upbeat music as well as songs
that will pull at your heartstrings —
everything from jigs and reels to airs.
Not only will attendees get an earful
of another culture’s music, they
will also learn a little bit about the
history, legends and the jokes behind
the music.
“Jerry Barlow is skilled, funny and
riveting. The majority of musicians
are skilled in either performing or
in entertaining an audience. It’s rare
and enjoyable to see a musician at
the very top in both areas,” says Scott
Beach, director of Colorado Celtic
Entertainment.
This will be Barlow’s first time performing
in Orange City, but Orange
City Arts Executive Director Janine
Calsbeek believes that he’ll have a
good turn out.
“The Orange City Library and
Orange City Arts collaborated and
brought a classical guitarist in 2014
and Peter Fletcher was a huge hit
with all ages. The library southeast
corner was full, with people standing
in the sidelines,” Calsbeek said. “So
we thought we’d try another guitarist.
So many of us love Celtic music, and
Jerry Barlow is accomplished. And
funny and engaging.”
Barlow has played all over the country
and has released four albums, the
latest of which was released in 2013.
“Twas the Night, Songs of Christmas”
is his most recent work and his album
“Fields and Fences” was one of five
nominees for Instrumental Album
of the Year but Independent Music
Awards.
The concert is free to attend and
there are no tickets necessary.
They will be taking a freewill offering
though in an effort to continue
this kind of programming in the
future.
And, since there’s no reserved seating,
you might want to get there early
to secure your spot. That’s exactly
what Calsbeek is planning to do.
“I’m excited to hear Jerry Barlow
in person — I’ve only heard him
online,” Calsbeek said. “It will be an
evening of beautiful, peaceful and
sometimes haunting music in a relaxed
setting. The library will move
displays again, so the show is on the
main floor — surrounded by books
again — but in the central section so
there will be more room.” F

Nature Center hosts
event at Ainsworth-
Orleans Beach
While many might contend
that this is not the time of
year to go to the beach, the
people at the Dickinson County Nature
Center couldn’t disagree more.
Once again they are hosting their
monthly Hike the Wild program
on Tuesday, Feb. 23, and this time
around they are going to explore the
Ainsworth-Orleans Beach area as well
as hike some of the trails around the
State Fish Hatchery.
“Since the area isn’t very big at the
Ainsworth-Orleans Beach area we are
going to also check out the park at the
State Fish Hatchery,” said Charles Vigdal,
a naturalist with the Dickinson
County Conservation Board.
“It’s kind of like a hidden place
because it’s not used a lot. So we
wanted to show people this great spot
that most people don’t seem to know
about.”
While there will be plenty of time to
explore, Vigdal hopes that people will
leave this program with a little more
information than they came with.
They will be talking about a very
important topic especially for this
time of year.
“Our theme for this program is ice
safety, which is such an important
topic this time of the year when the
ice is starting to melt,” Vigdal said.
“It’s a little after the ice fishing season
but it’s very important for people to
know what they are doing if they are
going to go out on the ice.”
They’ll be discussing what to take
with you if you’re going out on the
ice, how to test for ice thickness and
different safety precautions you can
utilize if you are going to venture out
onto the ice.
“It should be a nice day to see what
the ice is doing and see what how it
looks as it breaks up,” Vigdal said.
“We always like to make our programs
educational and some of the places
we go there’s not as much to see but
we always try to have people learn a
little bit. We like to add a little bit of
knowledge and a little bit of instruction
so people can walk away with a
little information or a new skill.”
Because of the melting that might
happen or even the snow that might
be happening, make sure you bring
your boots to Hike the Wild this time
around. While some of these programs
have the option for parents to
bring their children along in strollers,
Vigdal said that this time it isn’t such
a good idea.
“We’re not going to be hiking a lot.
It’s not going to be a long march, but
because of the weather conditions I
think people will want to leave the
strollers at home,” Vigdal said.
The program will start out at the
Dickinson County Nature Center at
9:30 a.m. and the group will caravan
out to the site.
“That’s kind of part of the Hiking
the Wild series. We want people to
know how to get to some of these
places,” Vigdal said. “Some of these
places we go to are really hard to find
so they can go back themselves and
utilize these areas more and more.” F

Crisis Centers:
Family Crisis Centers, formerly
the Domestic Violence Aid
Center, was established by a
group of volunteers in 1982.
The development came after
a group of concerned citizens
recognized a need for services
to assist victims of domestic
violence.
The agency started by serving
4 counties, which eventually expanded
to cover 8 counties. Now,
Family Crisis Centers provides
services to adults and children
victimized in domestic violence
and human trafficking in 17 Iowa
counties. Services expanded to
include WISH Unit, a program
dedicated to serving survivors of
homicide, which covers 29 Iowa
counties. The most recent addition
is Iowa Domestic Violence
Helpline, a 24-hour statewide call
center serving victims and survivors
of domestic violence.
The staff, volunteers and Board
of Directors is committed to
providing the much needed and
deserved assistance that victims
and survivors need. Everyone
deserves the right to safety and
freedom from violence.

The Family Crisis Centers is
hosting its sixth annual Wine
Gala & Auction on Friday, Feb.
26. There will be a number of
prizes up for auction.

d’oeuvres and bid for a helicopter
ride. The sixth annual Family
Crisis Centers Wine Gala & Auction is
sure to be a fine evening and a fantastic
fundraiser for the organization.
The event will be hosted at the Terrace
View Event Center on Friday, Feb.
26, with the doors opening at 5 p.m.
and the auction beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $25
per person.
“This is our
largest fundraiser
of the year and
a very important
event for us,”
Family Crisis
Centers marketing
director Tara
Raman said. “We
get grant funding
but since it is
regulated there are often gaps and these
funds help bridge those gaps and help
us provide more services for families.”
There will be seven wineries, six
from Iowa and one from South Dakota,
Family Crisis Centers hosts sixth
annual Wine Gala & Auction
on hand providing samples of their
favorite vintages. A Family Crisis Centers
staff member and her mother will
prepare many of the hors d’oeuvres,
which will include things like sliders,
meatballs, fruit and cheese tables, dips
and many other things. New this year is
Catalanos Cucina of LeMars, who will
be bringing their wood-fired brick oven
pizza options to the table.
“The wineries will be stationed
around the event center with auction
items and appetizer tables spread
thoughout so guests can eat a little bit,
try some wine and check out what’s up
for auction,” Raman said. “We get a lot
of support and donations from places
all over the area including Sioux Center,
Sheldon, Orange City, Hull, Sioux City,
Sioux Falls and more.”
A unique item up for auction this year
is a Twilight Flight from Strawbale Winery
in Renner, SD. The package includes
a helicopter flight from the winery for an
aerial view of Sioux Falls as well as a few
other perks. There will also be Disney
World tickets, a wide variety of jewelry,
gift cards, hotel stays and even a trip on
the Sioux Falls Sip ‘N’ Cycle.
The event has averaged about 250-
300 people with attendance steadily
rising over time. A common question
Raman has received about the fundraiser
concerns attire.
“A lot of people have asked me what
they should wear, I think because the
word ‘gala’ is attached they aren’t sure
how formal they should dress,” Raman
said. “We’ve seen it all from jeans and
t-shirts to suit pants and ties to one guy
who wore a full tuxedo.”
No matter what the attendees wear
they can know they will be supporting
a great cause.
“It will be really fun evening of
unique food and a great wine tasting
experience,” Raman said. “Apart from
that, in supporting this event you could
be supporting a friend, neighbor or
someone you don’t know who is going
through a difficult time.”

appetizers, perhaps win a prize at auction
and support a great cause all in one
fun evening during the Family Crisis

Northwestern College’s
art, English and music
departments will present a collaborative fine arts event
Monday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the college’s Te Paske Gallery.
The evening will center on the Biblical story of Leah in the
book of Genesis and will feature written, musical and visual
work by people from Northwestern College and the community
of Orange City.
Artwork by community members and a poem by Dr. Sam
Martin, assistant professor of English, will be on display in the
gallery Feb. 15–26. During the Feb. 22 reception, musicians
will perform a variety of musical responses to the theme, artwork
and poetry.
