THE SCOUTS ARE COMING

For some, there’s nothing more exciting 

than the arrival of the migratory bird, the 

Purple Martin. They are the largest of the 

North American swallows. Flying from 

South America where they winter, they faithfully 

return to the same locations every year. 

The first to arrive are called scouts and they 

are usually the older males. They are not 

looking for nesting areas but simply returning to where they 

nested before. The younger males follow and then the females 

arrive. Both sexes help build the nest, which will be home to 4 

or 5 babies. As soon as the chicks leave the nest, the Martins 

start congregating in large flocks and roost together in preparation 

for their trip south. 

Have you ever heard anyone say, “Location, location, location?” 

This is especially true if you want to attract Purple Martins. They 

are colonial nesting birds, which means they occupy apartmenttype 

houses. Since Purple Martins feed while in flight, they prefer 

their housing be placed in the open, away from human housing 

and trees. They eat mosquitos, beetles, wasps, dragonflies and 

other day-flying insects. 

House Sparrows and Starlings can take over your Purple Martin 

house. They can prevent Martins from nesting, destroy their eggs 

and kill nestlings. Do some research on the internet and find 

out how you can become a successful Purple Martin landlord.

PLEASE, NO SOCCER PLAYING AT 

RECREATION AREA 

For several reasons, the soccer goals in the recreation area were 

removed last year. The area was designed for a playground, the 

swimming pool and clubhouse, a volleyball court and the tennis 

courts. Unfortunately soccer playing, with or without the nets, 

had caused a disturbance to some of our neighbors whose yards 

back up to the recreation area, especially in the evening hours. 

Moreover “enthusiastic play” caused damage to the fences resulting 

in expensive repairs. Each time a broken fence picket had to 

be removed, then a new one purchased, stained and installed. It 

was not a big job, but time consuming and costly. The grassy area 

also was becoming very worn to the point where soon it may have 

had to be re-sodded. We also had many complaints about soccer 

being played on the tennis court, causing damage to the tennis 

nets and preventing residents from peacefully using the courts for 

tennis. Finally, as has been a problem with our other recreation 

facilities, we found non-residents using our property for playing 

soccer. Our sheriff deputy patrols are assisting us when we can 

identify trespassers. We want our own residents to have access and 

enjoyment of our recreation facilities for their intended purposes.

A Sheriff’s deputy has only one pair of eyes. But together, Berkshire 

residents have a couple of thousand eyes. So when you 

see any suspicious activity, please call the Sheriff’s Department 

non-emergency number at 713-221-6000 immediately and 

provide as many details as possible. For emergencies call 911. 

And please cooperate with law enforcement officers after the 

fact to help convict criminals. Remember, for a safe community 

crime prevention is a cooperative effort. 

LOCK CAR DOORS AND PUT AWAY VALUABLES 

Many car burglaries occur because valuables are visible in the 

cars. Bags, purses, phones, GPS’s and laptops are all invitations to 

criminals. Even if it takes you only a few minutes to stop at a store 

or drop off the kids, put valuables out of sight. Some victims make 

the crime easier by leaving car doors unlocked. Car burglars have 

been know to move through a neighborhood trying door handles 

for unlocked cars. Simple advice: always lock them.

• Make sure your doorways are visible from the street and not 

obscured by shrubs, etc.

Some of the major expenses are security 

through a contract with Harris County and 

additional coverage by direct contracts 

with Sheriff’s deputies; landscaping maintenance 

including the irrigation system; 

operation of the recreation area (pool, 

tennis courts and playground); utilities 

including the lighting bill and the professional 

management company fees, plus all 

the related administrative expenses. You 

also bear the cost when some homeowners 

do not pay their annual assessment 

fees. In some cases legal action must be 

taken and legal expenses must be paid before 

delinquent debts are collected. Such 

action is taken because some homeowners 

would leave the rest of us bearing their 

share of the expenses. 

You have a stake in your community and 

you have a voice if you care enough to 

exercise it. We all have a common interest 

in seeing that our money is spent prudently 

with adequate internal controls and 

that Berkshire remains an attractive and 

comfortable place to live. When you see 

a problem, let it be known, but come with 

a positive suggestion for improvement. 

Remember we are all in this together and 

want the best for Berkshire.

Monday of each month and the meeting

PARKING ON THE STREET 

The Association receives numerous complaints 

a day regarding cars parked in 

the street. Parking in the street not only 

looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. 

Please refrain from parking in the street as 

it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles 

should be parked in the garage or in the 

driveway at all times. 

GRAFFITI 

Please report any graffiti you may see in 

the community to PCMI. 

ADDRESS STONES 

Please be certain that shrubs are trimmed 

away from address stones. This is very 

important for 911 emergency vehicles. 

FLAT CURBS 

Please refrain from parking vehicles on the 

flat curbs. Vehicles parked on the curbs 

eventually cause damage and deterioration. 

Further note that storage of vehicles 

on streets or within road right-of-way is 

specifically prohibited.

ARE TOP PERFORMERS 

In February, 61 orchestra students from Cy-Lakes High School 

performed at the region Solo and Ensemble contest at Cypress 

Springs High School. Although many students received a 1 st 

division on their solo/ensemble performances and received 

medals, for the first time, five students qualified for performing 

at the State Solo Ensemble to be held at University of Texas in 

May. The qualifying students are Brandon Estrada, Denarius 

Terry, Jesse Serpas, Trey Dadzie and Oscar Kitmanyen. These 

students practiced for months and memorized lengthy pieces of 

music. Natalie Purdy, director of orchestras at Cy-Lakes, states 

that all the students get critiqued by a certified judge and receive 

feedback and a rating. This is a great accomplishment for these 

young people. Currently, the Cy-Lakes orchestras are preparing 

to perform at UIL in April and at Disney. 

CY-LAKES STEP TEAM STEPS UP TO HELP 

The Cy-Lakes Step Team, under the direction of Andrew White, 

does more than give excellent step performances. The team, officially 

known as Lambda Nu Theta, is part of YMPA (Young Men 

for Positive Action) and is making concerted efforts to reach out 

to the community and make a difference. 

Recently, the team went to Third Ward and cleared an overgrown 

lot to create space for a community garden. They also volunteered 

at the Houston Food Bank where they sorted through donations 

to remove expired or damaged products and group like products 

together. Lambda Nu Theta participated in the heart walk and 

donated $100 to the fundraiser. The team puts on a Stocking 

Stomper Showcase each year at Cy-Lakes. Discount tickets are 

offered at the annual step show when patrons donate canned

each one has been a great success. Each year the Step Team 

collects loads of can goods and toys for needy families during 

the holiday season. 

Mr. White says, “Many people don’t realize that YMPA is not 

just about stepping. YMPA stands for “Young Men for Positive 

Action”, so we are a service organization first and foremost. We 

only step as a bonus activity.” Last year, the team was awarded 

the Community Service award at the district step competition 

because they had the most service projects of any high school

LIVESTOCK SHOW AND SALE GENERATES MORE 

THAN $500,000 FOR PROJECTS 

CFISD students are expected to raise more than $500,000 from 

the 22 nd Annual CFISD Livestock Show and Sale, held February 4 th 

- 6 th at the CFISD Exhibit Center. The CFISD community showed 

an incredible amount of generosity in the live auction, freezer 

sale and via additional monetary contributions to students. The 

Premium Sale (live auction) unofficially raised $502,250. Final 

amounts from the Freezer Sale (animals not placing high enough 

for the live auction), Agriculture Mechanics silent auction and 

additional gifts to students are not yet available, but CFISD 

career and technical education coordinator Denise Kubecka 

mentioned that five records were tied or broken as grand and 

reserve champions sold.

Visitors, guests and library patrons may park without a permit 

in designated visitor parking areas. However, a daily or yearly

Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas 

Beautiful invite you to set aside time for 

their Elementary School Art Contest. Did 

you know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are 

the most likely to litter? We need to do 

all we can to motivate young Texans to 

keep our environment free of trash. This 

contest is a great way to share the Don’t 

mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful 

litter prevention messages with your 

elementary school students so that they 

learn good habits from an early age. 

Get creative! Inspired by their creativity 

and desire to protect our environment, 

elementary school students from across 

Texas can submit their best litter prevention 

design to be considered for the 

2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. 

Entries will be judged based on creativity/ 

uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention 

message and interpretation of theme, 

overall visual appeal, composition and 

age appropriateness. 

Students win prizes and have their art 

featured. Students who create the top 13 

winning designs will have their artwork 

assigned to a month or featured on the 

cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas 

Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 

tablet donated by H-E-B and Central Market.

MEN’S OUTWARD FLAG FOOTBALL 

Come join men 18 yrs and older for our men’s Outward Flag 

Football league coming this spring. Practice/Games will be on 

Saturday afternoons around 2 PM. The league will have a 

tournament at the conclusion of the season. Evaluations for all 

players will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, March 14 th , 

15 th and 17 th from 6-7 PM and Saturday, March 19 th from 

10:30-11:30 AM. These will take place on the fields behind the 

church. Cost for the league will be $40 per player covering cost 

of officials and jersey. First games will be April 9 th and season 

concludes on May 21 st with tournament. Registration will begin
