Hello Chapter Members,<br />
Having just returned from SCI Convention, I can tell you that the<br />
low price of oil and our low Canadian dollar is definitely affecting<br />
not just us as Albertans and Canadians, but North America as a<br />
whole. We have all tightened up our wallets, but as we have<br />
been, a group called Animal Justice has been directly attacking<br />
you and I as hunters in Canada!<br />
This group managed to get the African Hunting Show in Toronto<br />
shut down the day before their event when exhibitors and<br />
SCI members had their booths setup! Then they turned their<br />
attention to the show in Saskatchewan where they stirred<br />
up enough trouble that the event was in danger of also being<br />
shut down! One of the protestors at the Saskatchewan show,<br />
when asked by a SCI person where he was from, said he lived<br />
in Vancouver and Animal Justice had paid his room and flight<br />
to come out and protest! Are you kidding me? These are the<br />
people who are slowly taking over and are a direct threat to us<br />
as hunters.<br />
Concern now has switched to our fundraising banquet. A<br />
network of meetings has been taking place and SCI International<br />
has corporate lawyers looking into not only litigation against this<br />
group for what they have done closing shows, but also to protect<br />
us from this group so they cannot pressure venues that hold our<br />
banquets Canada wide.<br />
Fighting for our right to hunt in Canada is first priority for Canadian<br />
Chapters. We are going to start a “War Chest” together to help<br />
fund our fight in combination with the efforts of SCI International.<br />
Our chapter is strong, but we need your help even in tough times.<br />
Please help your right to hunt by maintaining a membership,<br />
coming to our great banquet this fall, donating to our cause, and<br />
spreading the word of our great organization and all the good<br />
things SCI does to protect us as hunters.<br />
If we don’t I can assure you Animal Justice (groups) will gladly<br />
watch our way of life as hunters/conservationists disappear.<br />

SCI - DRAYTON VALLEY HOSTING<br />
The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter is excited to once again be hosting the NASP Provincial Tournament.<br />
The <strong>2016</strong> event will take place in the community of Drayton Valley from April 27-30. SCI Drayton<br />
Valley, in partnership with the Brazeau BowBenders and AHEIA, will be coordinating this event.<br />
The <strong>2016</strong> NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) Provincial Tournament will welcome<br />
over 900 archers in Grades 4-12 from our local community and across Alberta as these represent<br />
their schools and compete for top prizes in individual and team categories.<br />
We are excited about our new venue to host the NASP Provincial shoot. This year’s event will<br />
take place at the vacant WellHouse building situated at 5416 Industrial Road (across from RCMP<br />
detachment). We extend our gratitude to Judy Sweet for making this venue available to us.<br />
The archery tournament will feature some wonderful athletes, but in addition spectators and<br />
competitors will be welcome to participate in fishing, hunting, and archery games available at<br />
the location. We welcome you to come take in the event!<br />
To host an event of this magnitude takes a number of individuals. If you or someone you know<br />
might be interested in volunteering their time to assist on tournament dates please reach out to<br />

At this year’s <strong>Feb</strong>ruary convention, the SCI<br />
Drayton Valley Chapter was recognized as<br />
the 2015 SCI International Chapter of the<br />
Year!<br />

We are patiently awaiting spring and the reopening of the Drayton<br />
Valley SCI Fishing Dock. Preparations are already being made to<br />
ensure that we can welcome as many guests, if not more, than<br />
last year! In order to meet the needs of all of our user groups, we<br />
are looking for volunteers to assist us this summer.<br />
If you are interested in contributing some of your time at the dock,<br />
please contact Shannon Davie at 780-542-6777 as this will help to<br />
create a volunteer list that can be accessed once the dock opens.<br />

OUR CHAPTER 2014-2015 ACHIEVEMENTS<br />

Through the 2014/2015 year the SCI – Drayton Valley Chapter experienced great successes and attained<br />
huge goals in support of SCI’s mission toward hunting conservation, education and humanitarian<br />
endeavors. One of our most memorable occasions was the privilege of being awarded the 2014<br />
International Chapter of The Year Award.<br />
We continue our pride and commitment toward our major humanitarian project; our Fishing Dock<br />
for seniors residing within care centres and individuals with disabilities. Our local Board and Chapter<br />
members have contributed in excess of 900 volunteer hours toward the operation and maintenance<br />
of the dock this year. Over the summer months we have been very fortunate to have a variety of user<br />
groups visit the dock, with some senior groups travelling from two hours away to visit our facility and<br />
enjoy the benefits it has to offer. We were also pleased to host a group of inner city youth from the<br />
Boyle Street Centre in Edmonton. In total this summer we have had over 200 individuals visit the dock!<br />
In support of SCIFs missions on a global scale, our Chapter was extremely pleased to be involved in the<br />
delivery of numerous Blue Bags this past year. One was sent to Colombia, two to Africa, and two others<br />
were sent again through our affiliation with Hearts of Lushoto, which is a local community organization<br />
we have partnered with for a number of years.<br />
As part of our commitment to sustain our hunting heritage and providing our youth the opportunity to<br />
enjoy the great outdoors, we facilitated a youth hunter training program in April 2015. This course was<br />
offered free of charge to youth 12 to 17 years of age, with 8 youth participants and 3 volunteers from<br />
our Board of Directors participating.<br />
The Drayton Valley Chapter of Safari Club International is very proud to continue their support of the<br />
National Archery in Schools Program (NASP). Over the past year we maintained our current commitment<br />
to the program by way of supporting needed upgrades to current school participants kits. We also<br />
provided a kit to the Holy Trinity school and look forward to them coming on board this school year!<br />
Of significant mention is our involvement in the coordination of the 2015 NASP Provincial Shoot right<br />
here in Drayton Valley in partnership with the Brazeau Bowbenders and AHEIA. This shoot saw over<br />
900+ youth archers congregate at the Omniplex over a four day period. It was an amazing event and we<br />
look forward to continued involvement in hosting the <strong>2016</strong> Provincial Shoot! Drayton Valley is easily<br />
on its way to being one of the most involved and recognized NASP communities in Alberta. Since its<br />
inception our Chapter has committed in excess of $80,000 toward the NASP program. It is our hope<br />
that this program brings a new level of enjoyment to those students who may not have had the chance<br />
to shoot target archery equipment, and that our local youth’s participation in the program may spark<br />
an enjoyment for the outdoors and all that it has to offer! Our goal is that this outdoor educational<br />
opportunity will impact children for years to come and raise awareness for Safari Club International and<br />
its educational efforts. The NASP Program is a great addition to our educational system and we hope it<br />
brings great enjoyment to all involved!<br />
Over the past year our conservation efforts have focused on the Woodland Caribou which are on the federally<br />
listed species at risk. Our focal point on this project has been within the Willamore/Hinton area. In addition<br />
we have financially supported the Safari Club International Foundation in their efforts to safeguard hunter<br />
rights and champion wildlife conservation and outdoor education projects on a global scale.<br />
To you, our members and supporters we thank you for your many contributions. It is your commitment<br />
and support of the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter that has contributed to the accomplishments that have<br />
been achieved. If you are not yet a member of SCI, please do consider joining SCI tonight to help the<br />
only organization that will protect your freedom to hunt.

Youth Hunter Training Course in the Spring of<br />
<strong>2016</strong>. The course dates are as follows:<br />

FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS!<br />

Many of us take to the field each spring and fall to hunt. Have you ever asked yourself, why?<br />
I know the reason I do. It’s not for a quest to shoot the huge buck; the score of a deer quite<br />
frankly doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s for the chance to be outdoors with my friends having<br />
fun! It’s wired into me, I can’t change it. Now that being said I have hunted now for over 25<br />
years. I have been with friends hunting Caribou in the Territories, Antelope in Colorado and<br />
bear in our back yard. Looking back it was never about shooting the “Big One”. It was always<br />
about having a great time and laughs with the people (friends and family) I was with.<br />
Being a Taxidermist I have a<br />
lot of hunters coming through<br />
the door. A common thing I<br />
have noticed is that “What If”<br />
scenario". What If” my whitetail<br />
didn’t break off that brow tine…<br />
”What If” I had given him one<br />
more year to grow… ”What<br />
If” he had been just a little<br />
wider! It seems that we are<br />
all so busy running through life<br />
that we cannot slow down to<br />
enjoy what is given to us, or the<br />
opportunity in front of us.<br />
Here is what I would like you<br />
to think about next time you’re<br />
out pursuing your passion.<br />
“What If” I had no great friends to share a hunt with… “What If” I had no physical ability or legal<br />
opportunity to hunt…“What If” the score of my last deer was more important than the company<br />
of my good friends on that hunt.<br />
As a hunter being in the woods with my family and friends sharing that experience is the best<br />
part of the hunt. The harvesting of an animal or bird is just icing on the cake. As I get ready for<br />
this spring bear hunt, gopher shoot, and fishing trip I have planned I am not worried about the<br />
trophy size of my bear or my lake trout for that matter. But…”What If” I didn’t have great friends<br />
or the opportunity to fill that need that has been hard wired into me to enjoy the outdoors and<br />
share it with great people along the way. So to my family and friends I say the same thing I hope<br />
you all can….”What If” we hit the field and do it all over again this year!<br />

in South Africa where they humbly delivered two blue bags for the boy and girl divisions of the orphanage.<br />
The orphanage was home to 18 boys and 16 girls and is sustained by local hunt farms in the area who<br />
provide wild game meat that hunters have harvested.<br />
Staff at the orphanage ensure the children go to school on a consistent basis, and they also arrange for<br />
tutors to come in twice a week to help those that have fallen behind. Some of the children fall behind<br />
in their learning as they have not received any form of schooling until such time as they arrived at the<br />
orphanage.<br />
By the age of eighteen educators endeavour to enrol the youth into technical training where they can<br />
benefit from on the job training and begin earning an income. Financial management life skills are also<br />
encouraged by way of staff assisting the youth in setting up savings accounts so that they can secure funds<br />
to aide in the purchase of their own home. At the time the Schwengler’s visited there were three students<br />
who were working but still had to come back to the orphanage to sleep and eat.<br />

Braised Venison with<br />
Tomatillo & Poblano Peppers<br />
PREP TIME: 1 hour COOK TIME: 4-6 hours SERVICE: 4-6<br />
This is my favorite venison recipe because the neck braises up so well leaving<br />
the sauce rich but not overly gamey. The acidity in the tomatillo tempers the<br />
venison’s wild flavor leaving it much more approachable to discerning palates.<br />
This dish goes great with a sweet potato gratin. The venison can be braised<br />
ahead of time.<br />
1 Venison neck roast, if not available, 3 to 4 Tomatillos<br />
substitute with any roast cut<br />
1 Onion, large dice<br />
6 Garlic cloves, roughly chopped 2 Leeks, diced<br />
3 Anaheim peppers, seeded and diced 3 Poblano peppers<br />
White wine<br />
Chicken stock<br />
Lime juice<br />
Bay leaf<br />
Salt and pepper<br />
1. Soak the tomatillos in warm water and remove one at a time and peel off<br />
the outer skin. Once all are peeled, quarter each. 2. Large dice one onion, dice<br />
leeks, and rough chop garlic. 3. Brown off the venison neck on all sides, remove<br />
from pan and add the onions, leek, and garlic with a touch more olive oil. 4.<br />
Deglaze pan with white wine. 5. Dice and seed the anaheim pepper and add to<br />
the pot. 6. Char the poblano over an open flame or under a broiler, turning as<br />
needed. Peel the char off the poblano, de-seed it and small dice it and add to<br />
the pot. 7. Add the quartered tomatillos to the pot. 8. Add the roast back to the<br />
pot and enough chicken stock to bring the level of liquid up half way around the<br />
roast. Cook over low heat about 3 to 4 hours until the bones are easily removed<br />
from the meat, pull out all bones. 9. Season with salt, pepper, and lime juice.<br />
To Serve<br />
Serve with fresh cilantro and cotija cheese, alongside sweet potato gratin.<br />
Sweet Potato Gratin<br />
This recipe is excerpted from Wild Gourmet: Naturally Healthy Game, Fish, and Fowl Recipes for Everyday Chefs.<br />
4 Large sweet potatoes<br />
Butter<br />
3 Large onions<br />
Red chili flake<br />
Sea salt<br />
Cotija cheese<br />
Olive oil<br />
1. Caramelize the three onions. Start onions in a hot<br />
pan with butter. Season with salt and let cook down<br />
stirring often so they don’t burn at first. 2. Once the<br />
onions begin to release some of their juice turn heat<br />
down to medium low and let color build up on the<br />
bottom stir and release the color. 3. Peel and slice<br />
sweet potatoes thinly on a mandolin. 4. Grease a<br />
casserole dish with the olive oil. Layer one complete<br />
layer of sweet potatoes on the bottom of the dish.<br />
Spoon in caramelized onions, add salt and a very,<br />
very small bit of the red pepper. Repeat layering<br />
until casserole is either full or you run out of sweet<br />
potatoes. 5. Top with the cotija cheese and bake at<br />
350°F for one hour covered with foil or when potatoes<br />
are soft.<br />

ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL INVITATIONAL ARCHERY TOURNAMENT<br />
St. Anthony School hosted their second annual invitational archery tournament on <strong>Feb</strong>ruary 19th and<br />
20th with 173 archers participating from 7 area elementary and middle division schools!<br />
SCI Drayton Valley Chapter sponsored the team trophies and medals as well as the individual award<br />
plaques for top male and female archer in each division. SCI Drayton Valley has been instrumental in<br />
introducing and supporting all our schools with NASP Archery.<br />
Cabela’s also donated a target for the participant draw and provided discount coupons for each archer<br />
in the tournament.<br />
An event like this takes many helping hands. We thank our St. Anthony School Grade 8 Mentor Archers<br />
and Staff for their help in setting up the range and running the office and tallying the score cards, and<br />
the Range Officials.<br />
How does one come up with an acknowledgement for all the coaches?! Because of your dedication<br />
and volunteerism the archers from your school benefit. From the time you spend on the range to your<br />
work in organizing everything from permission forms, tournament entries, equipment transportation<br />
and even making sure the archers have their shoes! The work a coach does often goes unnoticed; but<br />
let me acknowledge all that you do and reinforce that it is important, recognized and appreciated. Hats<br />
off to you!<br />
This tournament is an important preparation for our archers to help them prepare for the ‘big’ events;<br />
Nationals in March and Provincials in April.<br />
We at St. Anthony School are pleased to host this event. We thank you all for your participation.<br />

6TH ANNUAL<br />
Our 6th Annual Horn Night event held on December 10, 2015 saw chapter members and guests<br />
congregate at the Violet Grove Community Hall to share hunting stores from seasons past and to show<br />
off antlers from animals harvested. It was a great evening of camaraderie.<br />
