2016 NASP Provincials
HOSTED BY SCI DRAYTON VALLEY
3 |
The 2016 NASP Provincials were hosted in Drayton Valley April 27-30 for
the second year in a row and this year's event proved to be an even larger
success. Close to 1,000 archers from Grades 4-12 came from every corner of
the province to compete for top individual and team honors. It was great to
see teams travel from as far as Red Earth Creek and Warner to be a part of
the competition. This year's venue, the Wellhouse Warehouse, served as an
excellent location to showcase the archers and host other activities such as
bouncy houses, interactive fishing and archery games, and glitter tattoos. SCI
Drayton Valley and the Brazeau Bowbenders graciously thank Judy Sweet for
her donation of the building to host the tournament. We also want to say thankyou
to our amazing volunteers who dedicated their time to ensure the event
ran smoothly and that the participants walked away with great memories.
Drayton Valley schools posted some top results with St. Anthony School and
Aurora Elementary School placing second and third in the elementary school
division. SCI Drayton Valley is proud of the accomplishments of all our local
archers and coaches and are proud to be a part of this amazing program.

2 "Full Circle"
Laurel Barbieri Collage Giclee
SCI - Drayton Valley Chapter is once again pleased to present to our guests a non-typical method of
artistry by Laurel Barbieri. Her work captures nature and animals in a very raw form. It connects the
art viewer with the history of the animal dating back to the first record of them carved into the walls
of caves. To simulate this effect and history Laurel created her own method and form of painting
called relief sculpture. This layering of material and paint create a life for the painting that simulates
the walls of ancient caves. We are pleased to present you with this beautiful collage collection
entitled "Full Circle De'Ja'Vu".
GLASSING FOR GOLDS
What an amazing Hunt and Holiday we had with
Telford Hunting and Fishing. Our journey started
on April 6, 2016 as we flew from Edmonton
International Airport to our destination of
Queenstown, New Zealand where we enjoyed a
couple days of site seeing prior to embarking on
our hunting adventure with the Telford's!
The morning of April 10th we headed to Lake
Wanaka, with Gerald Telford, where we resided
at Lake Hawea Hotel which offered breathtaking
hillside and lake views. We were excited to be
leaving the following morning for the hunt.
7:00am couldn’t come soon enough! Gerald picked
us up and off we went; we were only ten minutes
away from our hunting location. Gerald parked at
the bottom of one very steep hill (well for me any
way with a fused ankle)! As we walked along we
saw Fallow deer free ranging, I spotted a rather
large Red Stag to my right. Then, Gerald tapped
me on the back and pointed to my left, another Red
Stag was walking towards us. I managed to get that
Red Stag on video bugling for us; what a morning!
I was amazed at watching the animals. Not long
after we got set up and glassed for animals to
hunt. Gerald found some Red Stag way up in the
mountains. Gerald and Real both saw a Red Stag
that was a shooter and Real named him “Charlie”
so that we would all know which animal we were
talking about when glassing. We started moving
towards where “Charlie” was feeding. Real could
not get a shot at “Charlie” because he was in thick
brush. We hiked up the side of the mountain on
a clear cut trail but still could not get a shot at the
Red Stag that was up there.
We made our way back to the bottom of the hill.
As we moved our way over to the other side of the
trail, Gerald spotted a gold Stag. Real set himself
up so that he could see about a 12 inch circle of
the Red Stags shoulder and neck area. Real shot
once and the animal just dropped. I was shocked
when Gerald and his wife Sue took off up the side
of the hill as if it were flat, Real followed behind
them. There was no way with a fused ankle I could
climb that hill! Turns out, Real got himself a very
nice Gold Red Stag. Gerald had to tie himself to a
tree to butcher the Red Stag as it had rolled down
the hill. Gerald attached the antlers, head, back
WRITTEN BY RETA CHALIFOUX
straps, hind quarters and cape to his back pack and
took it all down the mountain in one trip!! We all
jumped into the truck and Gerald dropped us off
at our hotel. Gerald said he was going to finish
butchering the Red Stag that afternoon and he
would be back to pick us up the next morning at
7:00 am.
April 12th, second day of hunting, Gerald informed
Real his Red Stag had measure 427 inches of bone.
We went to the same area as the day before and
the fallow deer were out but no Red Stags. We
went and set up to glass for animals again. Gerald
spotted one Red Stag that was standing way on the
mountain just off from the fence line. Real spotted
a Red Stag that was sunning himself alongside a
large rock. Gerald figured the Red Stag on the rock
was around 400 inches, a definite Gold. It looked
like the Red Stag were watching us watch them!
Gerald Decided it would be better to go around the
hill and see how close we could get to the Red Stag
that way instead of the way we had gone up the
hills and base of the mountain the day before. Off
the three of us went, it was a steady incline up the
hill. Considering what I had heard from one hunter
who had been to New Zealand I was very impressed
with the fact that we had trails to go up. I had
heard that you had to crawl through thorny bushes
that had two to three spikes on them and the Black
berry bushes and rose bushes with all their thorns.
I asked Gerald if that was what it would be like today
and Gerald assured me that would not be the case.
Gerald does archery hunting and carries a special
tool with him to cut away the thorny bushes so a
customer does not have to deal with the thorns,
you still have to pay attention so you do not hit the
trees and bushes in a few places.
Once we got to the top of the mountain the Red
Stag that Gerald thought was a Gold had moved
farther up the mountain. We sat up there for a bit
and glassed some more. Gerald started to laugh
and said if we had taken the same route as we had
yesterday that we would be shooting the Red Stag
about the same area as yesterday. Gerald figured
we should go back down the mountain and see
what we could find once we were down there.
So off we started back across the mountain. The
Red Stags, 900 meters away, just watched us walk
across the top of the mountain that we had been
sneaking around. The
Red Stag sunning himself
on the Rock we named
“Ritz” he had two
crowns one the top of
each of his antlers. We
decided when we got
to the bottom that we
would stay around this
creek area hoping the
Red Stag would come
over to drink. Gerald
decided he would go
back up the mountain
were the Red Stags were
bedded down and see if he
could get them to move to
where we would be waiting.
About half an hour later we
saw a couple of animals about
400 yards away. The one Red
Stag was staying pretty much under
cover of the trees. Real saw “Ritz”
coming and then he just disappeared. I
stayed set up on the side of the hill I would
be shooting downward just a bit if the Red stag
came towards the creek. About ten minutes passed
and I saw this really nice Red Stag coming down the middle
towards where I was standing; I asked Real should I shoot
him. Real stated that is was not the right one It was
not “Ritz”. The Red Stag had not seen us and just
kept walking towards us, he turned broad side and I
asked Real again should I shoot him. The Red Stag
must have smelt us he turned his neck just a bit
and I squeezed the trigger. The Red Stag took off
towards the left and away from us both. Real took
off towards were the Red Stag was because he had
seen Gerald. When Gerald got to where we were,
Real told Gerald I had shot the Red Stag about
100 yards back. To my surprise Gerald informed
me that I had shot “Charlie” the Red Stag we had
been looking for yesterday that escaped! We took
pictures and then we started to cape the Red Stag.
Gerald again took us back to the hotel where we
had lunch and we relaxed for the afternoon.
That night as we gathered with the Telford’s, Gerald
informed me that “Charlie” had measured 377 inches
of bone. I was elated! Our time with the Telford’s was
amazing!
