STRATEGIES IN LIGHT EUROPE | 2012 3
WELcOME FROM PENNWELL<br />
Dear Colleagues,<br />
We are pleased to <strong>in</strong>vite you to attend the third annual Strategies <strong>in</strong> Light Europe conference to be held at the M.O.C.<br />
Event Center <strong>in</strong> Munich from September 18-20, 2012. For the past two years, the conference has been chaired by Tim<br />
Whitaker, Editor of <strong>LED</strong>s Magaz<strong>in</strong>e. However, this year Tim has decided to devote full time to his journalistic duties,<br />
<strong>and</strong> we will be the conference co-chairs <strong>for</strong> 2012. By way of <strong>in</strong>troduction, Strategies Unlimited (a PennWell company)<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>ated the fi rst Strategies <strong>in</strong> Light conference <strong>in</strong> the US <strong>in</strong> 2000 <strong>and</strong> recently completed the 13th annual US<br />
conference. In addition Strategies Unlimited <strong>in</strong>augurated Strategies <strong>in</strong> Light conferences <strong>in</strong> Japan <strong>and</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> 2008<br />
<strong>and</strong> 2010, respectively.<br />
The focus of SIL Europe is to address the press<strong>in</strong>g issues that affect the <strong>LED</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> Europe, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>LED</strong><br />
light<strong>in</strong>g. As the recent Light + Build<strong>in</strong>g trade show <strong>in</strong> Frankfurt amply demonstrated, the adoption of <strong>LED</strong>s by the<br />
European light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry is well underway. Hundreds of companies throughout Europe are offer<strong>in</strong>g thous<strong>and</strong>s of<br />
light<strong>in</strong>g products that <strong>in</strong>corporate <strong>LED</strong>s as a light source, rang<strong>in</strong>g from spotlights to recessed lum<strong>in</strong>aires to outdoor<br />
area lights. In terms of effi cacy, lumen output <strong>and</strong> reliability, <strong>LED</strong>s have proven themselves to be optimal light sources<br />
<strong>for</strong> multiple applications. Modules <strong>and</strong> components are widely available that dramatically reduce the barrier to entry of<br />
any light<strong>in</strong>g company that wishes to develop <strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g products.<br />
In spite of these developments, there rema<strong>in</strong> many issues <strong>and</strong> concerns that affect the European solid-state light<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry. High cost rema<strong>in</strong>s a barrier to more rapid market adoption. Technologies <strong>for</strong> dimm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> control are<br />
widely available, but implementation can be challeng<strong>in</strong>g. Color quality, <strong>and</strong> uni<strong>for</strong>m st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>for</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g it, is<br />
a widespread subject of discussion <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry. The development <strong>and</strong> implementation of a uni<strong>for</strong>m set of <strong>LED</strong><br />
light<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>and</strong>ards throughout the EU community rema<strong>in</strong>s a press<strong>in</strong>g issue. St<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>for</strong> quality <strong>and</strong> reliability of <strong>LED</strong><br />
light<strong>in</strong>g products have not yet been widely adopted. All of these topics <strong>and</strong> more will be addressed at Strategies <strong>in</strong><br />
Light Europe.<br />
In addition to the ma<strong>in</strong> conference tracks, two pre-conference workshops <strong>and</strong> the Solid-State <strong>Light<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Investor Forum<br />
will be offered on the day preced<strong>in</strong>g the ma<strong>in</strong> conference sessions. Moreover, the exhibit area will feature over 80<br />
companies show<strong>in</strong>g the latest products from throughout the <strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g vertical supply cha<strong>in</strong>, from components to<br />
lum<strong>in</strong>aires.<br />
We look <strong>for</strong>ward to see<strong>in</strong>g you <strong>in</strong> Munich <strong>in</strong> September.<br />

WORKSHOPS & SSL INVESTOR FORUM<br />
Day 1 - Tuesday 18, September<br />
09:00 – 12:00 | Workshop 1: <strong>Light<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Beyond Vision – Biological Aspects of Light<br />
This workshop will address the emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> important body of research of the relationship between<br />
light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> human health <strong>and</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g. Much of this research centers on the non-visual response to<br />
light, <strong>and</strong> its impact on circadian rhythm, metabolism, alertness, <strong>and</strong> many other aspects of human biology.<br />
Increas<strong>in</strong>gly, this research is becom<strong>in</strong>g available to the light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>and</strong> on a beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g level to a<br />
lesser extent the general public. So far, the research has been <strong>in</strong>corporated to a limited degree <strong>in</strong> specific<br />
sett<strong>in</strong>gs, such as hospitals or nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes. Other areas where research results might be applied <strong>in</strong> the<br />
future <strong>in</strong>clude schools, offices, <strong>in</strong>dustrial sites (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g shift workers), <strong>and</strong> homes <strong>for</strong> the elderly (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
ambient assisted liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> residential areas).<br />
Much has been discovered <strong>in</strong> recent years about the effects of light<strong>in</strong>g on human biology, but clearly<br />
much rema<strong>in</strong>s to be <strong>in</strong>vestigated further. The purpose of this workshop will be two-fold: 1.) to learn about<br />
the status of research <strong>in</strong> this field; <strong>and</strong> 2.) to underst<strong>and</strong> how this research might be applied <strong>in</strong> the future,<br />
especially with the advent of <strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g, to provide light<strong>in</strong>g that will benefit human health, productivity,<br />

WORKSHOPS & SSL INVESTOR FORUM<br />
Day 1 - Tuesday 18, September<br />
09:00 – 15:00 | SSL Investor Forum<br />
For many years, the <strong>in</strong>dustrial l<strong>and</strong>scape of light<strong>in</strong>g has been stable, dom<strong>in</strong>ated by the leaders such as<br />
Philips, Osram <strong>and</strong> GE. However, the recent advancements <strong>in</strong> <strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g technology, coupled with<br />
decl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>LED</strong> prices, are accelerat<strong>in</strong>g the adoption of solid-state light<strong>in</strong>g (SSL) <strong>in</strong> many segments of the<br />
light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry, caus<strong>in</strong>g disruption to traditional <strong>in</strong>dustrial structures. This change is creat<strong>in</strong>g both risks<br />
<strong>and</strong> opportunities <strong>for</strong> companies <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestors <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the light<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
The SSL Investor Forum, be<strong>in</strong>g held <strong>for</strong> the second year, aims to address some of the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal questions<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g asked by <strong>in</strong>vestors. The Forum will discuss issues such as the pace of adoption of <strong>LED</strong>s <strong>in</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
the longer-term growth potential of the market, profi<strong>tability</strong> analysis, <strong>and</strong> opportunities to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong><br />
different levels of the light<strong>in</strong>g value-cha<strong>in</strong>. Other factors <strong>for</strong> discussion <strong>in</strong>clude the effects of regulations<br />
<strong>and</strong> government subsidies, <strong>and</strong> the penetration of consumer electronics manufacturers <strong>in</strong>to the light<strong>in</strong>g<br />
space. Speakers from publicly-quoted companies as well as successful European start-ups <strong>and</strong> venture<br />
capital firms that have brought successful <strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g products to European <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational markets will<br />
share their expertise <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>sight. <strong>LED</strong> <strong>and</strong> module manufacturers will be represented, as well as lum<strong>in</strong>aire<br />
<strong>and</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g system manufacturers. Speakers will discuss <strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>fluence of<br />
energy-efficiency <strong>in</strong>itiatives <strong>in</strong> Europe, as well as opportunities <strong>for</strong> growth of <strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g start-ups.<br />
The SSL Investor Forum is specifically designed <strong>for</strong> current <strong>and</strong> potential <strong>in</strong>vestors, as well as <strong>LED</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g companies seek<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g opportunities. The Forum will provide valuable <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation <strong>and</strong><br />
excellent network<strong>in</strong>g opportunities.<br />
12:00 – 13:00 | Delegate Lunch<br />

The importance of st<strong>and</strong>ardtization of the <strong>LED</strong> ligt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry across all European nations has been <strong>in</strong><br />
discussion <strong>for</strong> a long time. The advancement of <strong>LED</strong> technology <strong>in</strong> a wide variety of applications creates a<br />
need <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry to come up with the set of st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>in</strong> order to provide a well-def<strong>in</strong>ed technology solutions<br />
<strong>for</strong> consumers as well as to protect them from low quality products.<br />
The purpose of this workshop is to cover the most essential topics related to <strong>LED</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> to<br />
