verslaving aan nieuwheid?
One Million Territorial Claim
2016
One Million, een project van kunstenaar Uli Aigner, is een
artistiek commitment om een miljoen porseleinen objecten,
chronologisch genummerd van 1 tot 1.000.000, met
de hand te vervaardigen Met deze levenslange inspanning
belichaamt ze Richard Sennett’s theorieën over de filosofische
verbindingen tussen hand en hoofd, terwijl ze verkent
hoe de structuur van getallen letterlijk ingebed kunnen
worden in het gebeeldhouwde materiaal. Ze presenteert 193
en 13 objecten, verwijzend naar de 193 bestaande natiestaten
en de 13 landen waarvan de soevereiniteit wordt betwist
door de Verenigde Naties. Met deze middelen exploreert
de kunstenaar de relatie tussen productie, object en de wereld.

en nieuwe menselijke instincten ontwikkelen?
Prostheses for Instincts
2008 – 2011
Prostheses for Instincts houdt het midden tussen een
artistieke hypothese en een wetenschappelijk experiment.
Het is een verkenning van het idee dat een prothese kan
werken als een uitbreiding van onze emotionele gewaarwording.
De voorgestelde apparaten worden rechtstreeks
op de huid gedragen en staan in verbinding met datastromen
gerelateerd aan mogelijke gevaren, zoals beursgegevens,
wisselkoersen, natuurrampen, of lokale criminaliteit.
Wanneer een verandering in de binnenkomende data
geregistreerd wordt komt het apparaat automatisch in actie
en worden haptische sensaties gecreëerd die vergelijkbaar
zijn met onze natuurlijke instinctieve reacties: opstaand
nekhaar, koude rillingen, kippenvel, enz. Op deze manier
stelt het apparaat mensen in staat data waar te nemen
en op deze manier een nieuw menselijk instinct voor
de abstracte en latente gevaren buiten ons natuurlijke
bewustzijn te verkrijgen.
Dit werk bouwt voort op een belangrijk thema uit het
transhumanisme: het verder ontwikkelen van onze natuurlijke
zintuiglijke ervaringen en de verbreding van het
spectrum van zaken die we kunnen waarnemen. In zijn
verschillende variaties toont het werk scenario’s van
het transhumanisme, waarin machines menselijke emoties
kunnen opwekken.

How does repetitive hand labour challenge our
addiction to newness?
One Million Territorial Claim
2016
One Million, a project by the artist Uli Aigner, is an artistic
commitment to handcrafting one million porcelain vessels,
chronologically numbered from 1 to 1,000,000. In this
life-long endeavour, she embodies Richard Sennett’s theories
concerning the philosophical connection between the hand
and the head while exploring how the structure of numbers
are literally embedded in the sculpted material. She presents
193 and thirteen vessels, referring to the 193 existing nation
states and the thirteen states whose sovereignty is disputed
by the United Nations. Through these elements, the
relationship between production, object, and the world
is tested.
Prostheses for Instincts sits between artistic hypotheses
and scientific experiment. It is an exploration of the idea
of the prosthetic device that acts as an emotional extension.
The devices envisioned are to be worn directly on the skin.
They connect to data streams that relate to deferred dangers
such as stock market data, currency exchange rates, natural
disasters, or local crime rates. When a change of incoming
data registers, the devices automatically jump into action
and create haptic sensations similar to those caused by
natural instinctual responses: raised neck hair, cold shivers,
goose bumps, etc. In this way, the devices enable people
to feel data and thus obtain a new human instinct for the
abstract and deferred dangers that occur outside of their
natural awareness.
This work builds upon a common theme in transhumanism:
the augmentation of our natural sensory
experiences and widening the spectrum of things that
we can perceive. In its various incarnations, this work
proposes scenarios of transhumanism in which machines
induce human emotions.
