1958 – 1961
The exhibition Pierre Bourdieu in Algeria: Testimonies of
Uprooting shows the historical, scientific, and biographical
contexts of the extensive ethnographic and sociological
studies Pierre Bourdieu carried out in Algeria between
the years of 1958 and 1961 – representing, as he noted,
his earliest and at the same time his most topical work. All
of Bourdieu’s fundamental themes of sociology are already
present, even at this early stage. He addresses the subliminal
rules of exchange, the social embedding of economy, the
relation of temporal structures to rationality, the symbolic
orders of society, and the hierarchies between the sexes,
generations, and social classes. His photographs serve
as a catalyst for carving out the different thematic complexes
found in Bourdieu’s theoretical works.
Bourdieu’s groundbreaking fieldwork, now supplemented
for the first time by his photographs, provides insight into
the nascent state of his sociology. These images also represent
an impressive socio-historical document. They testify to a
society full of uneven developments where people still have
not overcome their uprooted situation: their alienation from
both tradition and modernity. Maybe it is Algeria’s tragedy
that, even after four decades, these images have still lost
none of their topicality and realism.

Masquerading as Global Security Response, a fictitious
defence and security think tank and consultancy, the activist
duo The Yes Men managed to dupe the European Parliament
into letting them give an official press conference. During
the meeting, they describe the failures of military action,
drone operations, assassinations, surveillance, and policing
in reducing terrorism, before presenting the ‘solution’:
a fully-fortified and wearable orb called the ‘ENDURAsphere’,
which gives wealthy citizens the ability to survive any
terrorist attack.

De tentoonstelling Pierre Bourdieu in Algeria: Testimonies
of Uprooting toont de historische, wetenschappelijke
en biografische context van de omvangrijke etnografische
en sociologische studies die Pierre Bourdieu tussen 1958 en
1961 in Algerije uitvoerde. Volgens Bourdieu zelf vertegenwoordigd
dit zijn eerste en tegelijkertijd meest actuele werk.
Alle fundamentele sociologische thema’s die Bourdieu later
zou ontwikkelen komen reeds in dit vroege werk aan bod.
Hij adresseert de subliminale regels van uitwisseling, de
sociale inbedding van de economie, de relatie van tijdelijke
structuren en rationaliteit, de symbolische ordes van de
samenleving, en de hiërarchieën tussen geslachten, generaties
en sociale klassen. De foto’s van Bourdieu dienen als een
katalysator voor de uitdieping van de verschillende thema’s
in zijn theoretische werken.
Bourdieu’s baanbrekende veldwerk, nu voor het eerst
gecompleteerd met zijn fotografie, geeft inzicht in de vroege
fase van zijn sociologische werk. Deze beelden vormen ook
een indrukwekkend sociaalhistorisch document. Ze tonen
een samenleving vol ongelijke ontwikkelingen, waar
de mens probeert om te gaan met een ontwortelde situatie:
hun vervreemding van zowel traditie als moderniteit.
Het is wellicht de tragedie van Algerije dat, zelfs na vier
decennia, deze beelden nog steeds actueel zijn.

Vermomd als Global Security Response, een fictieve denktank
en adviesorgaan voor defensie en veiligheid, slaagde
het activistenduo The Yes Men erin het Europees Parlement
te overtuigen om hun een officiële persconferentie te laten
geven. Tijdens de vergadering beschrijven ze het falen
van militaire acties, drone operaties, aanslagen, surveillance
en politieoptredens in het reduceren van terrorisme, alvorens
de ‘oplossing’ te presenteren: een volledig gepantserde,
draagbare orb die de ‘ENDURAsphere’ heet en rijke burgers
het vermogen geeft elke terroristische aanval te overleven.
