However, the French Spider Man is not invincible. Alain Robert has admitted to having some serious falls in his climbing career. On 18 January 1982, at age 19, he fell 49 feet when his anchor and rope gave way during training. He fractured his wrists, heels and nose and underwent three operations. On the 29th September 1982, at age 20, he fell 49 feet when his rope came undone while abseiling. He was in a coma for five days and fractured both forearms, his elbow, pelvis and nose. His elbow was also dislocated and a nerve was damaged, leaving him partially paralyzed. He also suffered cerebral edema and vertigo. He underwent six operations on his hands and elbow. Also in 1993, he fell 26 feet while showing students how to rely on their legs when climbing. He kept his hands behind his back on an easy route but lost his balance and fell headfirst, shattering both wrists. He went into another coma and spent two months in the hospital. In 2004, he fell 6 feet when climbing a traffic light whilst posing for a photo in an interview. He landed on his elbow and needed forty stitches. However, just one month later he climbed the world’s tallest skyscraper at the time, Taipei 101 in China, as part of its official opening week. “ Climbing is my passion, my philosophy of life. Can you give us a quick bio of your background and beginnings? I started climbing in the year 1975. At first it was to prove to myself that I was not a loser. I climbed my parents building where we were living, it was seven stories. Not long after I became a boy scout and this is when I really started to climb. 2. What attracted you and got you into this sport? I didn’t see climbing as a sport as 40 years ago it wasn’t. Climbing was something more adventurous than a sport for me. I liked the idea of conquering something with the risk of death. For me it seems to be courageous. And it seemed to have so much more added value compared with the other sports like football and so on. 3. What do you have to do to train and prepare for this sport? The training was pretty much about climbing as much as I could. I did physical training home as well like pull ups, pushups and many other muscle strengthening kind of exercises. Later on I
had my own climbing wall at home. I also had to be on a good diet, just healthy food to make sure I did not gain too much weight. 4. As a professional, what is the best thing about this sport and what sets it apart from others? Even though and now it may be a sport at least and for me it is more like a life style. Especially since I have been climbing buildings most of the time illegally, so my dedication is strong. I’m am also not competing against other people so it is different from a sport. It’s more like I am doing what I believe in life and I’m accepting the consequences. With the buildings I climb some may be easy and others difficult or even very difficult. It depends on the structure. But before the buildings, I have been climbing a lot of cliffs and mountains without any ropes at a level that nobody else did before. And I’m talking about things I did more than 20 years ago. Such as climbing the mountain La Buit Du Lezard in Buouxor Polpot in Verdon. 5. What are some of your favorite achievements? Some of my best accomplishments in climbing skyscrapers are the Sears building in Chicago or the Petronas in Kuala Lumpur, still the highest twin towers in the world. Both were illegal. I got 5 Guinness World Records certificates. I also got the Grand Prix of the French senate in France after I climbed the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. I got one price from the IOC in 1991 in Poprad Slovakia after I climbed at the time what was the hardest route ever. I got plenty of prizes : Prix de L’exploit Sportif is one I am very proud of. I’m also in the book: Les 100 Plus Grands Sportifs De Tous Les Temps. “ Being a top athlete requires total concentration and some sacrifices. I have suffered a great deal, but here’s the result.
