2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
STORY LINES:
• Years of hard work and dedication, coupled with a rare in-state opportunity to compete for national championships, will all come together
when the Big Red’s contingent of nine wrestlers heads to Madison Square Garden for the three-day event beginning on Thursday, March 17.
• Cornell won an unprecedented 10th consecutive EIWA title and its 14th-straight Ivy League crown earlier this spring and will attempt
to claim its first team championship.
• Cornell enters the tournament with a pair of wrestlers seeded No. 1 in their weight class - three-time All-American Nahshon Garrett at
133 pounds and 2015 national champion Gabe Dean at 184 pounds.
• Garrett, the 2014 NCAA runner-up at 125 pounds, became the 10th wrestler and fourth Cornellian to claim four EIWA crowns and now
looks to add a first national title.
• Three-time EIWA champion Dean will have a chance to join him next year, but in the meantime will look to become Cornell’s fourth
two-time national champion (joining Dave Auble, Travis Lee and Kyle Dake).
• Junior Brian Realbuto, the national runner-up a season ago at 157 pounds, is the No. 2 seed at 174 pounds after posting a 33-3 record
this season and winning an EIWA title at 174 pounds.
• Also collecting a top five seed is junior Dylan Palacio (No. 5 at 157), who fresh of his first EIWA title, will be looking to earn All-America
honors for the first time.
• Cornell will also have five unseeded wrestlers who will have a chance to climb through the field.
• Seniors Duke Pickett (165) and Owen Scott (197) and freshmen Dalton Macri (125), Joey Galasso (149) and Jeramy Sweany (285) have each
been ranked nationally during the season and are all, with the exception of Pickett, ready to step on the big stage for the first time in March.
• Pickett is a two-time NCAA qualifier and 2016 EIWA runner-up who will be looking for his first NCAA win after making an appearance
at nationals a year ago.
CORNELL NCAA NOTES
• The Big Red’s nine NCAA qualifiers were 136-10 (.932) against wrestlers who did not advance to the championship meet this season.
• It is the third time in program history Cornell has had a pair of No. 1 seeds at the same tournament (Kyle Dake at 141 and Mack Lewnes
at 174 in 2010; Cam Simaz at 197 and Kyle Dake at 157 in 2012).
• Cornell has three wrestlers seeded in the top two in their weight class from the second straight year (No. 1 Gabe Dean at 184, No. 2
Brian Realbuto at 157 and Nahshon Garrett at 133 in 2015) and the third time in school history (No. 1 Mack Lewnes at 174 and Kyle Dake
at 141, No. 2 Troy Nickerson at 125 in 2010).
• It is just the sixth time in program history Cornell has had four wrestlers seeded in the top five (1958, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2015).
• Cornell has placed in the top five at the NCAA championships in six of the last seven seasons and in the top 10 in 11 of the last 13 years
(eight straight).
• Cornell will be sending a school-record tying nine NCAA qualifiers to New York City, matching a record set in 2005 and since matched
in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015.
• The Big Red has had at least one individual NCAA champion in seven of the last eight years and at least one finalist in eight straight
campaigns.
• The Big Red has had 12 different wrestlers win a combined 17 NCAA titles. Kyle Dake is one of three wrestlers to claim four national
crowns (doing it in four different weight classes), while Dave Auble and Travis Lee won two titles each.
• Cornell is one of just eight schools to qualify at least nine wrestlers for the championships, trailing only Nebraska, Oklahoma State and
Rutgers with 10 apiece. Joining the Big Red with nine qualifiers is Iowa, Lehigh, Missouri and Penn State.
• Cornell has had 37 wrestlers earn a total of 72 All-America honors, including 52 total All-Americans since 2002.
SOUTHERN SCUFFLE:
• Junior Gabe Dean became the ninth three-time Scuffle champion and senior Nahshon Garrett won
his second title as the Cornell wrestling team finished fourth in a loaded 2016 Defense Soap & Flips
Wrestling Southern Scuffle field.
• Cornell finished the two-day tournament with four wrestlers on the podium and 98.5 points to finish
behind only Penn State (183), Oklahoma State (158) and Lehigh (104.5).
• Dean swept through an all-EIWA semifinals, defeating Navy’s Matthew Miller 10-5 in the semis and
Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh 8-2 in the finals.
• During the tournament he became the 23rd Big Red wrestler to 100 wins (104-5).
• The victory over Brown was a rematch of last season’s NCAA and EIWA championship matches.
• Garrett, the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds was even more dominant, earning bonus points in
each match en route to the title.
• He busted out quickly in the finals against Penn State’s Jordan Conaway, majoring him 14-4 for the crown.
• That came after earlier in the day taking an injury default win over Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State after
dominating the first 90 seconds.
• He took a tech fall victory over Minnesota’s Sam Brancale in the quarterfinals after earning a fall and
a tech fall in victories on day one.
• Also finishing on the podium were junior Brian Realbuto at 174 pounds and 165-pounder Duke Pickett,
both of whom finished sixth.
LAS VEGAS INVITATIONAL:
• Senior Nahshon Garrett became the fifth person to claim three Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational titles
to start the night, upsetting the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 133 pounds to lead three Cornell champions as
the Big Red finished second as a team.
• Juniors Brian Realbuto (174) and Gabe Dean (184) capped the night with dominant efforts in the finals
as five Big Red wrestlers reached the podium at one of the nation’s premier events.
• Garrett remained unbeaten since his move up to 133 pounds by knocking off undefeated defending
national champion Corey Brewer of Oklahoma, the event’s top seed.
• He rallied from an early 7-2 deficit for an impressive 14-9 victory to claim his third title, joining four-time
champion Logan Stieber (Ohio State, 2011-14) and fellow three-time champions Ben Askren (Missouri,
2004-06), Andrew Howe (Oklahoma/Wisconsin, 2009-10, 13) and fellow Big Red great Mack Lewnes
(Cornell, 2008-10).
• Dean will have a chance to join Garrett on that list a year from now after earning his second crown with
a dominant 15-6 major decision victory over 12th-ranked Dominic Abounader of Michigan.
• Rounding out the championship performances was a dominant 11-1 finals win by Realbuto over No.
15 Bryce Hammond of Cal-Bakersfield.
• Missouri won the team title with 154 points with Cornell settling in as the runner-up with 113 points.
• Cornell won the 2010 title and has now finished in the top six in each of the last eight seasons and five
times in the top three.
• The Big Red has won 17 individual titles dating back to 2004, including at least two in three straight years.
GRAPPLE AT THE GARDEN:
• The Cornell wrestling team got into early holes in both dual matches and couldn’t make up enough
ground late as the Big Red dropped a 21-14 decision to No. 5 Nebraska and a 21-13 contest to No. 14
Rutgers on Nov. 29, 2015 at the Grapple at the Garden in Madison Square Garden.
• Cornell’s three returning All-Americans, the staples of the Big Red lineup, each went 2-0 on the day with
Nahshon Garrett topping a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers at 133.
• Garrett earned an 11-3 major decision victory over Nebraska’s 10th-ranked Eric Montoya and captured
a 6-1 decision over No. 17 Anthony Giraldo of Rutgers.
• No. 2 Brian Realbuto topped Nebraska’s 15th-ranked 174-pounder 9-6 and defeated Phil Bakuckas of
Rutgers 6-1.
• Top-ranked Gabe Dean had an 11-3 major decision over Nebraska’s seventh-ranked T.J. Dudley and
overcame a slow start to major Nicholas Gravina of Rutgers, 13-5.
• Freshman heavyweight Jeramy Sweany had an outstanding effort in a 5-2 win over No. 13 Collin Jensen
in the first dual before a closer-than-the-final-score 8-1 loss to No. 7 Billy Smith of Rutgers.
THE BIG RED AT THE NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS:
• Cornell pinned its way to a fourth consecutive New York State Wrestling title, easily securing the title by
winning five individual titles and cruising past second place Army 202-171 at Barton Hall.
• Nahshon Garrett (133), Dylan Realbuto (141), Duke Pickett (165), Brian Realbuto (174) and Gabe Dean
(184) all won titles, two more Big Red wrestlers reached the finals (Dalton Macri medically forfeited to
second at 125; Will Koll lost to teammate Dylan Realbuto in a one-point decision in the finals) and the other
three reached the semifinals, with Jeramy Sweany medically forfeiting out the rest of the tournament after
winning his first two matches at heavyweight by fall.
• Winning by fall became a theme on the day, as the Big Red won 15 matches by pin in the
championship bracket, where its 10 scoring wrestlers posted a cumulative 35-4 record with 26
bonus point victories.
DAKE ‘13 CLAIMS SENIOR NATIONAL FREESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIP:
• Needing to finish in the top seven at his weight class to qualify for the Olympic Trials, Kyle Dake
did that and more in Las Vegas, Nev., on Dec. 19.
• At a new weight, Dake battled his way to the 2015 U.S. Senior Freestyle National championship
by defeating rival David Taylor in the finals, 11-4.
• Entering the tournament as the No. 7 seed, Dake nearly won by tech fall in the first 30 seconds
against Taylor with an opening takedown before rolling him three times to expose Taylor’s back
for two points each to gain an 8-0 lead, but Taylor reversed to cut the lead to 8-2.
• Taylor looked to be getting back into the match after earning a takedown to make it 8-4, but
Dake reversed him and rolled him again to make it 11-4 at the end of one.
• Dake defended throughout the second period with no points being scored.
• He moved to 7-0 all-time against Taylor in collegiate and international competition.
• Dake, who was underseeded largely due to his recent move to the 86kg from 74kg, topped Titan
Mercury Wrestling Club teammate Tyrel Todd by fall 1:53 into his first match.
• In the quarterfinals, Dake controlled the match against Titan teammate Keith Gavin, the No. 2
seed in the tournament, en route to a 6-2 win by decision.
• Dake won a nailbiter in the semifinals against No. 3 seed Jon Reader, earning the first two takedowns
of the match to build a 4-0 lead on his way to a 6-4 triumph to reach the finals.
NEXT UP:
• With the season complete, Cornell will begin defense of its 14 straight Ivy League and 10 consecutive
EIWA titles when practice begins in the fall.
Are Cornell Wrestlers on Scholarship?
The easy answer is no. Cornell student-athletes are
awarded need-based financial aid, just as any other
student who applies to the school. That package can
come in the form of student loans and grants. The basic
intent of the original Ivy League agreement of 1954
was to improve and foster intercollegiate athletics while
keeping the emphasis on such competition in harmony
with the educational purpose of the institutions. The Ivy
League is nationally recognized for its level of success
— absent of athletic scholarships — while rigorously
maintaining its self-imposed high academic standards.
The Ivy League has demonstrated a rare willingness and
ability, given the current national pressures on intercollegiate
success, to abide by these rules and still compete
successfully in Division I athletics.
Practice Interviews/Coverage
All interviews with Coach Rob Koll and players must
be requested in advance through the Athletic Communications
Office. The coach and players are available
for interviews before practices by appointment only, so
as not to interfere with academic or practice schedules.
Postgame Interviews
Coach Rob Koll and selected players will be available
after each match. The Big Red locker room is closed.
Radio
All of the Big Red’s games in 2015-16 are carried live on
1160 ESPN Radio in the Ithaca area and on the internet
at www.ESPNIthaca.com. Keith Raad takes over for his
Match 4: #4 Missouri 18, #14 Cornell 17
Jan. 10, 2016 * Jesse Hall Auditorium (Columbia, Mo.)
• After Brian Realbuto won a toss-up decision at 174 pounds to give
Cornell a 12-10 lead with three matches, two favoring the Big Red
on paper, Missouri had to put its trust in its upper weights to keep its
34-match dual meet win streak alive.
• That trust was well-placed - barely.
• Both teams won five matches, but No. 4 Missouri won a pair of bonus
point matches and that was the difference in an 18-17 victory over No.
14 Cornell at Jesse Hall Auditorium.
• With nearly its full lineup for the first time all season, the Big Red
announced that it will be a factor in the national title race before it’s
all over.
• The Big Red won two-of-three matchups between nationally ranked
wrestlers, but it was Missouri’s decision to avoid a fourth that likely
allowed it to end the day with a victory.
• Heading into what was expected to be a spotlight matchup between
No. 1 Gabe Dean and No. 4 Willie Miklus at 184 pounds, the Tigers
pulled their ranked wrestler in favor of brother Tim Miklus. Dean
dominated the match with an 18-1 technical fall to push Cornell’s lead
to 17-10 heading into the final two matches.
• Missouri tactically moved Willie Miklus up to 197 pounds, while
second-ranked J’den Cox at 197 moved to heavyweight with both
wrestling unranked competitors.
• Needing at least one bonus point to tie and two to win, the strategy
nearly backfired, as Jake Taylor gave Willie Miklus all he could handle.
• Taylor led 7-6 heading into the third period against his highly-ranked
opponent, but Miklus was able to prevail thanks to a stall call in the
final minute.
• Trailing 17-13, the dual came down to Cox’s matchup with rising Big
Red heavyweight Jeramy Sweany.
• Cox rode a boisterous crowd in the auditorium to the tech fall victory
and the win despite a valiant late effort to earn an escape point, which
would have allowed the team score to finish tied 17-17.
125: Dalton Macri (C) won by decision over #8 Barlow McGhee (M), 7-6
133: #1 Nahshon Garrett (C) won by decision over #11 Zach Synon (M), 12-5
141: #11 Matt Manley (M) won by major decision over Will Koll (C), 11-1
149: #4 Lavion Mayes (C) won by decision over Joey Galasso (C), 9-2
197: #4 Willie Miklus (M) won by decision over Jake Taylor (C), 8-7
285: #2 J’den Cox (M) won by technical fall over Jeramy Sweany (C), 24-9
Match 5: #16 Cornell 31, Harvard 14
Jan. 15, 2016 * Friedman Wrestling Center (Ithaca, N.Y.)
• Harvard had thoughts of ending Cornell’s 68-match Ivy League win
streak — momentary, fleeting thoughts.
• The Big Red ripped off wins in the final five matches, four accompanied
with bonus points, as the home team cruised to a 31-14 victory
over the Crimson at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
• Cornell overcame a forfeit at 133 with a pair of falls in the final 20
seconds of matches and five total bonus point victories.
• Missing three regular starters, the Big Red used a big second half
after trailing the Crimson 14-9 through five matches.
• Dalton Macri (125) and Gabe Dean (184), looking for extra bonus
points on the way to tech falls, each earned pins late to pick up the
extra important team point.
197: Owen Scott (C) won by major decision over Josh Popple (H), 15-2
285: Jeramy Sweany (C) won by decision over Nicholas Gajdzik (H), 5-2
Match 6: #16 Cornell 30, Brown 13
Jan. 16, 2016 * Friedman Wrestling Center (Ithaca, N.Y.)
• For the second day in a row, the bottom of Cornell’s lineup came up
big and the Big Red extended its Ivy League win streak to 14 years
with a 30-13 victory over Brown at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
• Cornell won its 70th straight against Ivy League opponents, but it
wasn’t a walk in the park.
• A Cornell forfeit at 133, a major decision win by Justin Staudenmayer
of Brown at 157 and a tight 11-7 victory by Jon Viruet at 165 gave the
Bears a 13-10 win after six matches.
• Just like the previous night against Harvard, Cornell took control over
the next three matches, all decided by bonue points, and earned a forfeit
win at heavyweight for the final margin.
• For the second straight day, junior Gabe Dean picked up six big team
points with a pin, squaring Austin Pfarr’s shoulders to the mat 2:35
into the first period.
• That came right after seventh-ranked Brian Realbuto fell just short
of a tech fall win over Andrew LaBrie at 174 (19-5) and before Owen
Scott put the match away with an 8-0 shutout of Augustus Marker at
197.
125: Dalton Macri (C) won by major decision over Michael Russo (B), 18-6
285: Jeramy Sweany (C) won by forfeit
Match 7: #6 Lehigh 25, #15 Cornell 13
Jan. 23, 2016 * Friedman Wrestling Center (Ithaca, N.Y.)
• Sixth-ranked Lehigh took advantage of the absence of Cornell’s two
top-ranked wrestlers and snapped the Big Red’s 47-match EIWA win
streak with a 25-13 win at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
• Lehigh earned 11 team points between a forfeit at 133 due to a Nahshon
Garrett injury and a technical fall win at 184 after Cornell used
John Jay Chavez, a 165-pounder, instead of undefeated Gabe Dean
against No. 3 Nathaniel Brown.
• Despite the loss, Cornell pulled a pair of upsets and lost another tossup
match by a single point.
• Junior Brian Realbuto, who has been ranked as high as No. 1 at 174
this season, earned a dominant major decision victory over Elliott Riddick
at 174 for Cornell’s lone bonus point victory of the day, while both
Duke Pickett (165) and Owen Scott (197) earned wins over ranked
wrestlers.
Match 8: #15 Cornell 23, Columbia 15
Feb. 6, 2016 * Friedman Wrestling Center (Ithaca, N.Y.)
• With a match against No. 4 Oklahoma State looming on Sunday, the
Cornell wrestling team made sure it wasn’t looking ahead and took
care of business to remain atop the Ivy League standings, winnings its
71st consecutive conference match with a 23-15 triumph over Columbia
at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
•Cornell forfeited at 125 and used four backups in the lineup, but a late
rally by Owen Scott at 197 sealed the win for the Big Red.
• The teams traded forfeits, with Cornell surrendering six points at
125 and Columbia giving them back at 141, meaning the only match
contestedi n the first three weights was top-ranked Nahshon Garrett’s
18-3 technical fall win over 2014 first-team All-Ivy selection Angelo
Amenta at 133.
• Cornell never trailed in the dual after Mark Grey had his hand raised
at 141, as senior Logan David earned a win on Senior Weekend with a
4-3 triumph over Danny Reed at 149 to build the team lead to 14-6.
• Duke Pickett and Brian Realbuto were dominant in decision wins at
165 and 174 over strong Lion opponents, and Scott wrapped up the
win by overcoming a 3-0 deficit thanks to a reversal, an escape, a third
period takedown and a stalling call to earn the 6-3 victory.
• Junior Dylan Palacio upset the No. 6 ranked wrestler at 157 pounds,
but Oklahoma State’s strength was apparent in a 32-12 dual meet victory
in front of 4,076 fans in Newman Arena.
• Cornell surrendered six points off the bat after forfeiting at 125 and
never got out of the hole, though senior Nahshon Garrett, wrestling
his final match in front of the home fans, did his best to tie it up.
• The senior took down 18th-ranked Gary Wayne Harding seconds into
the match, tilted him three times for four points apiece and took a
14-1 lead into the second period and earned the 17-1 tech fall.
• Besides Garrett, Dylan Palacio used an 8-4 upset over previously unbeaten
Joe Smith at 157 and Brian Realbuto majored Chandler Rogers
Match 10: #15 Cornell 21, Penn 9
Feb. 13, 2016 * The Palestra (Philadelphia, Pa.)
• Freshman Joey Galasso picked up a signature win in front of his
hometown fans and the Cornell wrestling team set up an Ivy title
match with Princeton by running through Penn 21-9 at the Palestra.
• All three of Penn’s nationally ranked wrestlers were defeated, with
Galasso’s victory over No. 12 C.J. Cobb at 149 pounds coming as the
lone upset.
• He rode a first period takedown to the victory in front of a loud,
friendly gymn that was cheering the local native on.
• He took a 3-2 lead into the the final seconds of the third and was able
to defend a late shot and go behind to clinch the 5-2 victory.
• Top-ranked Gabe Dean had yet another close match with rival and
15th-ranked Lorenzo Thomas at 184, but a takedown in sudden victory
handed him the 7-5 triumph.
• Dean led 4-2 after one with a pair of takedowns, but Thomas was
able to earn a pair of nearfall swipes to tie it up.
• The two each earned escapes and neither was able to put together an
effective shot over the final three minutes before Dean came out the
back of a scramble in sudden victory to pick up his 108th career victory.
285: Jeramy Sweany (C) won by decision over Patrick Garren (P), 7-1
125: Dalton Macri (C) won by decision over Jeremy Schwartz (P), 12-5
Match 11: #15 Cornell 23, Princeton 16
Feb. 13, 2016 * Dillon Gymnasium (Princeton, N.J.)
• If it was up to luck, the Cornell wrestling team’s 13th straight Ivy
League title may have been the end of a dynasty. Instead, the Big Red
celebrated a 14th consecutive unbeaten conference slate after running
out to an early lead and knocking off Princeton at Dillon Gymnasium.
• Senior Nahshon Garrett set the tone in the second match of the night
with a second period pin of Noah Arjam and junior Brian Realbuto all
but clinched the win with his tech fall victory at 174 over No. 16 Jon
Schleifer.
• Princeton won the final three matches of the night, including two
with bonus points, to close strong after falling behind 23-3, but the
team score was out of reach after Realbuto’s win.
• In a battle of league unbeatens wrestling for the second time today,
the Big Red didn’t wrestle top-ranked Gabe Dean at 184 pounds, instead
resting the junior with the match already won.
• It was the 30th straight triumph over the Tigers and also extended
the program’s string of consecutive winning dual meet campaigns to
30 dating back to the 1985-86 season.
125: Dalton Macri (C) won by decision over Pat D’Arcy (P), 6-1
133: #1 Nahshon Garrett (C) won by fall over Noah Arjam (P), 3:48
165: #15 Duke Pickett (C) won by decision over Judd Ziegler (P), 10-5
197: #10 Brett Harner (P) won by decision over Owen Scott (C), 6-3
