3. CSS, Acryloid B-72 Glue
CSS Acryloid B-72 glue is manufactured at our facilities using reagent grade acetone and Acryloid B-72 resin to form a
50/50 solution. Our B-72 glue is packaged in both 8 fl oz. and one quart bottles.
Starch adhesives
1. Natural Starches
Natural starches come in many different forms. Starches make an excellent water soluble adhesive-paste for bookbinding,
hinging prints and repairing works of art on paper. The strength and physical properties of starch adhesives can be modified
by there blending with PVA, PVOH and Methocel A4CP adhesives. If needed, pH levels can be adjusted by the addition (3-
5% by weight) of precipitated calcium carbonate. Any modifications must be done after the starch is cooked.
Cooking of starches to form paste can be done in either a microwave in a deep bowl or on a hot plate in a double boiler.
Either way you choose, you must stir the mixture as often as possible or your end up with lumpy paste. If you use the
microwave, heat in short 20-30 second burst, stir, heat, stir and so on for 4-5 minutes. Either way you will have to
experiment with the proportions of starch to water, but a good starting point with any of the starches is 1 part starch to 4-5
parts of distilled water.
2. RICE STARCH (BELGIAN)
Rice Starch forms a clear, medium strength adhesive that is lighter and thinner than wheat starch. Rice starch must be
cooked to form an adhesive.
3. WHEAT STARCH
Our Wheat Starch makes a strong adhesive that is clear with a superior smooth texture. This wheat
starch must be cooked to form an adhesive.
4. WHEAT STARCH, pregelatinized (No Cook Type)
Pregelatinized Wheat Starch needs no cooking to produce a very strong and smooth paste. It can easily be dissolved in
room temperature water in just a minute or two.
5. JIN SHOFU WHEAT STARCH
Jin Shofu is Japanese precipitated wheat starch which after cooking produces what is considered by many conservators to
be the smoothest and best wheat paste available.
6. YES PASTE
Yes Paste is a starch paste that is made from corn dextrine, corn syrup, water and preservative. It has a pH of approx. 6.5.
It can be used for bookbinding, but is not recommended for use with photographic materials. It has been under scrutiny for
some years for yellowing. Many archivist recommend Golden Heavy Gel Medium or Lineco Neutral PH Adhesive. Scotch
Permanent Glue Stick is also acid-free. Polyvinyl Alcohol Adhesive does not yellow and remains flexible with age.
