APRIL IS NATIONAL LAWN AND GARDEN MONTH
By Trey Collier
April is National Lawn and Garden month! This gives you a wonderful reason to get outside and
get your backyard and garden ready. Whether you are starting from scratch or are an experienced
pro, here are several tips that you can use to celebrate Lawn and Garden month in style!
Consider Backyard Composting - Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed
organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. Backyard composting is an acceleration
of the process that occurs in nature. It is recycling at its finest! Use kitchen waste (such as
food or paper towels), lawn clippings and wood chips to provide rich and powerful soil for your
garden and lawn. Anything that was once living will decompose, giving you endless options for
composting. Composting is good for your plants and for you! Adding organic materials to the soil
improves moisture retention. It provides a balanced, slow-release source of nutrients that helps
the soil hold nutrients long enough for plants to use them. Healthier plants means a healthier you!
It will also save you money because you will no longer have to buy fertilizer. Add a compost bin
to your garden and start today!
Add a fountain - Outdoor fountains offer an easy and affordable way to add style to your lawn or
garden. The soothing sound of running water will help to create a tranquil and relaxing escape
from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Transform your garden into your own personal
paradise!
Consider adding variety - If you are fond of flower gardening, venture into edible vegetables!
You will be thrilled with the sense of accomplishment you feel when you feed your family
fresh, healthy produce that you grew on your own. Beans, squash, cucumbers, lettuce/greens,
tomatoes, peppers, beets and garlic are all great vegetables to start with. They are relatively
easy to maintain and will offer beautiful variety. If you are already growing your own vegetables,
consider planting an eye catching flower garden (try marigold, lupine, daisy or wildflower mix
seeds). Fruits are also a great option. Apples, figs, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are
great for beginners. Variety is the spice of life!
Go high-tech - Modern technology impacts our daily life. Why not let it impact your backyard?
There are several innovations in outdoor living that you will wonder how you ever lived without.
The Robomower will make mowing your lawn virtually effortless. No more back-breaking work
and labor intensive afternoons spent cutting grass. You simply install special sensors around
the perimeter of your yard and push a button. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Another
product worth trying is the Mosquito Eliminator. Gone are the days of tacky bug zappers and
pesky insects at parties. It is so beautiful that your guests will never guess that it is fighting
mosquitoes and other pests. The Eliminator uses high-tech black light technology to cover up
OIL STAIN CLEAN UP
1. Clean up any fresh oil stains by blotting the surface with newspaper.
2. Sprinkle a layer of clay-based cat box litter over the top of the oil stain. You
want to completely cover the stain so that you can no longer see it through
the litter. The litter will soak up the oil from the concrete.
3. Monitor the color of the litter several times while it is sitting on the stain.
As the oil becomes absorbed into the litter, it will change to a darker color.
When the litter changes colors, remove the old litter by sweeping it up with a
broom. Dispose of the discolored litter as you did the oil-soaked newspapers.
Sprinkle more litter onto the stain the same way you did in the prior step
and continue to let it soak up the oil. Leave the stain covered with litter for a
minimum of one day. Clean away all the litter after 24 hours. Sweep up the
litter and dispose of it.
4. Apply a liquid dish detergent with grease-cutting agents to the oil stain.
Use a scrub brush to rub the detergent into the stain.
5. Allow the detergent to settle for five minutes, then scrub the detergent into
the stain again using short, circular movements.
6. Pour 1 cup of boiling water on to the dish detergent covered stain. Use
your scrub brush to rub the water and soap into the stain. Take care not to
burn yourself.
7. Blot up the now oily and soapy water with newspaper after the mixture has
cooled for several minutes. Dispose of the newspaper. Continue to blot the
area until you have absorbed all of the oily water.
8. Pour another 2 cups of boiling water over the stain. This will wash away
any oily water that was not absorbed by the newspaper. Be careful not to
burn yourself. If the stain is still present, repeat the process.
PLANNING OUTDOOR
HOME IMPROVEMENTS?
Please remember that when planning outdoor home improvements, you
must first complete an ARC form. This form is submitted to our Architecture
Review Committee before construction can begin. For questions or for a
copy of the form, please call First Service Residential at 713-932-1122 or
email at contactus.tx@fsresidential.com.
REGULAR WATERING
Regular watering, mowing, edging and weeding are ongoing homeowner
maintenance responsibilities. Your neighbors love you when you do your
part to keep the community beautiful and they complain to others when you
don’t. Your Association management team is receiving an abundance of calls
concerning dying grass and lack of mowing/edging/weeding. Please note,
your management team is sending out violation letters and charging back for
‘force mows.’ If dying grass cannot be brought back to life, the resident will
have to go to the expense to re-sod. For all our residents who consistently
do an excellent job at maintaining, we sincerely thank you for your hard work.
CALL BEFORE YOU DIG REQUEST
Before performing work on your property, call the “Texas One Call System
at 811.” They will mark the location of the utility lines easement within your
property. Remember, damages to any utility lines within your property can
affect services to YOU and YOUR neighbor’s homes. Thanks for taking time
to call before you dig!
resident’s lawn and charge them for the services rendered. A flat $ 80 fee
will be charged to the homeowner, regardless of whether the entire lawn will
need maintenance or if only edging (sidewalks, driveways, etc.) is required.
The HOA has discretion as to which services are needed at the time of
service.
GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great
many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy
‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches,
termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of
future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your
homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in
your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12”
- 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is
18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up
next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The
most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing
high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates
overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest
onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests
from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and
puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown
patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in
some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b)
fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not
water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and
more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS
make sure your email is correct, we send emails in the summer to make sure
all the info is still good and that you want to stay on the list. If we do not hear
time to make someone smile. If you would like to help, call the Katy Quilters,
